‘Hockey Mom’ Cyndi Lauper Says Fame is Hard On Son

For Declyn Wallace Thornton Lauper — the 10-year-old son of Cyndi Lauper and her husband, David Thornton — it didn’t take long to figure out that ‘mom’ had a different identity, entirely. In a new interview with The Guardian, Cyndi says that Declyn was just two years old when he realized that mom was a pop icon.
"Someone came up to me in the street and kept talking and talking. Declyn said afterwards, ‘Who are you?’ And I said, ‘I’m a mommy.’ And he said, ‘No, you’re not — you’re Cyndi Lauper!’"
Now, eight years later, the 55-year-old songstress says she worries about the toll her fame may be taking on Declyn. "It’s hard for him," she explains. "People look at him, and he feels the pressure of being my son." One place he likely doesn’t feel that pressure is on the ice; Cyndi pulled out photos of a long-haired, hockey-mask wearing Declyn for the interviewer and happily declared: "I’m a hockey mom."

Wow, Cyndi looks terrific! I have been a fan of hers since the 80’s (and loved her as Ira’s wife on Mad About You!) and it’s always so nice to hear her talk about her son. She mentioned him on Leno a couple years ago, and it’s so obvious to see how much she adores her son and how much she loves being a mother!

I’ve always wondered how Declyn’s name is prounounced. Is it DEK-lin or DES-lin? Cyndi looks awesome and I love her music!

Great Cyndi! She is right to worry about your child. The fame of it should really be a nuisance to Declyn. Often he can not be seen as a child but common as the son of Cyndi Lauper.

SouthernBelle – I would imagine it was pronounced DEK-lin as you said. It would be very odd if it was designed to be any other way. Cyndi soooooooo doesn’t look her age! How fantastic does she look?!

If life is like that that for her kid, can you imagine what it is like for the kids of the more famous Tom Cruise, Brangelina,.Madonna, etc.
You can see them looking right at the camera sometimes. I think that must feel very strange as a child. Maybe they are going to get used to it soon.
I wouldn’t like it being their parents!!!

My exhusband and her husband grew up together as their fathers were in the service together and the families knew each other. David Thornton always wanted to go into acting, and left Florida where his parents retired to go to New York. Several years ago, the last time we spoke with his Mother, she said that when they visited their son and grandson that Cyndi was a very normal, down to earth Mother and a very nice woman, no putting on airs because she was a star. It was so nice to hear this.
