Felicity Huffman Says Daughters Are Like ‘Chalk and Cheese’

During a Friday appearance on The Rachael Ray Show, Felicity Huffman said that although her two daughters "are not angels" — they’re "great" nonetheless. Second grader Sofia Grace, 8, and first grader Georgia Grace, 6, "are sort of like chalk and cheese, to use an English phrase," said the 45-year-old Desperate Housewives actress. "They’re very different, but complimentary," she explains.

"They fight, and they also have a great time [together], and if they’re away from each other for two or three hours, they miss the other one."

Because there is no instruction manual for child rearing, Felicity says that hers is "like any other household."

"We’re sort of stumbling along, figuring it out as it goes. You sort of need a practice family, where you make all your mistakes, like your first thing of pancakes. You throw them out and then start again."

Sofia and Georgia are Felicity’s children with husband William H. Macy, whom she married in 1997.

  1. Louise Says:

Why do both of her children have the same middle name?

  2. Brandi Says:

I think Felicity has said its a family name?

  3. Tamara Says:

Grace is the name of Felicity’s mother.

I believe that Felicity’s mom raised her and her 6 siblings all on her own and I guess giving both Sofia and Georgia the middle name Grace is a way to honor her.

  4. Bela Says:

WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL IF THEY BOTH HAVE THE SAME MIDDLE NAME? BOTH MY BOYS HAVE THE SAME MIDDLE NAME, IT’S MY LAST NAME. IN EURPOE A LOT OF PEOPLE GIVE THE CHILDREN THE MOTHER’S LAST NAME AS THEIR MIDDLE NAME.

  5. Sarita Says:

Bela, you don’t have to shout. I don’t where in Europe you are from but in my country in Europe I don’t know anyone with their mothers last name as a middle name.

  6. girlJordan Says:

My sisters (and mother and cousin) and I all have the same middle name.

  7. Léa Says:

Im european and I’ve never heard of people giving their last name to their children !

The name, yes but not the last name !

Anyway Grace is a pretty name and Felicity seems to be a very good mother ! and I also love the names Sofia and Georgia !

  8. Andria Says:

So, how are chalk and cheese complimentary?

  9. Alice Says:

Andria, that’s exactly what I was wondering!! ;)

  10. Erica Says:

That “chalk and cheese” expression sounds mildly disgusting. And I also don’t understand how they are complimentary.

  11. Brandi Says:

^ Maybe a UK person can tell us what that’s about!

  12. Ruthella Says:

We say ‘chalk and cheese’ all the time in the UK, but it never means ‘complementary’ (and certainly not ‘complimentary’, as I’ve never heard chalk telling cheese it looks great LOL).

Anyway, I think Felicity was saying her daughters are like chalk and cheese but ALSO that they complement each other, if that makes sense?!

I was wondering about the middle name thing too. I think it’s lovely to name them both after her Mum if she had such a strong bond with her. That said, I never heard of anyone in the UK doing it, although I do knew a few people who gave their babies the Mum’s maiden name as a middle name, to kind of ‘carry it on’.
