The Sutters Visit Sea World, Discuss Second Pregnancy

By Kristin Harmel in Orlando:

Reality TV couple Trista and Ryan Sutter, who told PEOPLE Friday that their new baby is due in April, say that this time around, the pregnancy experience has been different.

“This was totally a surprise,” says Trista, who gave birth to son Maxwell ‘Max’ Alston in July of last year after struggling publicly with infertility (the couple eventually used a OV Watch to predict their fertility). “We weren’t trying, necessarily, but we weren’t preventing. I honestly just remembered I hadn’t had my cycle in a while, and I thought, ‘hmmm.’ That’s a quite a contrast to the first time, because basically I was taking pregnancy tests throughout the month thinking, ‘Let’s cross our fingers.’

“It was a shock,” she adds. “Last time, we waited for so long, and it was so anticipated, and I just cried and cried and cried when I found out. But this time, it was more like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is amazing, and we feel so blessed.’”

Despite saying in the past that they’d want a girl next if theirfirst baby turned out to be a boy, Trista says she’s changed her mind.“I really, truly do not care,” she says. “I just want a healthy baby. Iknow it’s cliché. But I really do. I love having a boy, so I would lovehaving another. He’s such a good baby. But I would love to experiencebeing the mother of a girl. So I’m just leaving it up to God.”

Trista says she plans to have a tubal ligation after delivering hersecond baby. “I know people think it’s drastic when they hear that,”she says. “But I have such rough pregnancies. I would have been ashappy as a clam in salt water with just Max. So this is just the icingon the cake.”

But, she says, they’d consider adopting if they decide they want toexpand their family further. “I think we’d have to figure out first ifwe could handle two before we add a third!” she says.

In Orlando to speak at Fertile Dreams‘ Embracing Hope Gala and to celebrateher 36th birthday, Trista and Ryan took 15-month-old Max to SeaWorldOrlando, his first-ever theme park visit, where he played with penguinsand got a kiss from a killer whale on Friday. The family plans to swimwith dolphins over the weekend at SeaWorld’s Discovery Cove. “Max iskind of in awe,” Ryan says. “He’s not really very scared of things. He’s just really curious. It’s not like he’s laughing or smiling orcrying or anything. He’s just staring inquisitively.”

Adds Trista, “He does like to figure things out, and with the killer whales, I think he was thinking, ‘Is that for real?’”

Max, whose first word was, “Dad,” seems cut out for the spotlight. He holds up his index finger when asked how old he is, throws his armsabove his head and giggles when his parents say, “Touchdown!”, and evencurls his right lip up when Trista asks him to impersonate Elvis. Hesays a bunch of words – including ball, sock, shoe, fish, dog, bird, and fox – and he calls the family’s two dogs, Tash (short for Natasha)and Tank, by name.

As with her first pregnancy, Trista says she’s experiencing nausea, but she’s able to keep more food down this time around.

“With the first pregnancy, I didn’t eat anything for the firsttrimester,” she says. “I had no appetite and felt so nauseous that Ijust wanted to eat crackers. So this pregnancy, I feel a little better, and I have some more cravings. Like we have Snickers in the diaper bag.And smoothies. So if I have a craving, I’m going to eat it. I’m cravingsweets. And Ruffles and French onion dip. I would never eat that when Iwasn’t pregnant! I haven’t had that in ten years. Then I’m like, I haveto have those! So I haven’t limited myself. I haven’t gained too muchweight, but I’m not worrying about it.”

After having Max last summer, Trista bounced back to her pre-babyweight quickly. After taking the mandatory post-c-section six weeksoff, she hit the gym with a trainer and took a supplement, approved byher doctor, called Revolution Abdominal Cuts to help take the babyweight off.

“I worked really hard,” she says. “You have to. But I did it withinthe realm of what my doctor said was okay. I got a trainer, and thathelped tremendously. It just makes you accountable. If you go to thegym on your own, you can say, ‘Oh, I have all this work to do; or Ihave to go this.’ But if you have an appointment with somebody, it’stheir time, and you feel responsible. Even if you can’t afford that, meet a buddy at the gym.

“It was hard work, but when you have the motivation of being on thecover of a magazine, it’s good pressure because it’s good for you inthe end, but I know it’s not a normal pressure,” she continues. “So Itell people if you’re looking for inspiration, aim for going onvacation and putting yourself in a bikini. Or set up a family photosession with your new baby. Have a goal.”

  1. Kate Says:

Max is so adorable. I’m rooting for them, they’re a sweet couple!

  2. courtney Says:

Trista seems REALLY fake, I never watched the Bachorlorette, so I don’t know if she is actually this animated. Her poses are unnatural, it seems like she is trying to hard. BUT Max is adorable, he’s pretty much a little Ryan, which isn’t a bad thing ;)

  3. Irene Says:

This entire family is so stinkin’ cute! Like totally, ridiculously cute! Max is a beautiful blend of both his parents.

  4. KayR Says:

Max is such a little cutie. I cant wait till they have this baby.
I went to Discovery Cove in Flordia and its was so much fun swimming with the dolphins :)

  5. Mary Says:

it’s so funny, the parents seem more excited about the experience than little Max lol! he seems a little overwhelmed and lost. but cute pics tho.

  6. Pencils Says:

Do either of these two have a job, other than once having been on a reality show, or do they support themselves by selling stories to tabloids and gossip columns? I’m only slightly snarky here, I’m serious. Who cares about these two?

  7. brooke Says:

I read that they are in talks for a reality show about their family, trista said it would be good to help pay their morgage and debt. Max is cute and looks just like ryan. They are lucky to be having another baby, and with her rough pregnancies that’s good she is getting her tubes tied, why push it when your lucky enough to have 2 healthy children.

  8. HBoulware Says:

I had my tubes tied after our 3rd. That was 6 yrs.ago and people still ask Why? Why would you do that? I think you hear so much about infertility these days that it seems extreme. But, we were sure that we were done. Trista is awesome to speak about something that is kind of not talked about. She has a great family and Max is the cutest!!

  9. Elisa Says:

How does she know she has such “rough pregnancies”..? She’s only had one so far… Her current pregnancy is not that far along. Nausea is normal.

  10. Lily Says:

I love Max’s expressions in all of these. That look of awe and curiousity is just priceless.

  11. Krysta Says:

OMG look at ryan’s leg muscles in that wetsuit!!

  12. brooke Says:

Hboulware I understand what you mean. I can’t imagine why people would ask someone like you who had 3 children, why you had your tubes tied. Um maybe because you decided you were done having kids lol. I don’t get some people, I mean at one point or another a couples decides at a ceratin number they are done having kids, very few people keep going until their 50 or whenever they can’t no more lol. I know a lot of people who either their husbands or them got fixed, and very few regret it, most say it’s a relief not to have to be on birth control until your 50 or whenever your period leaves for good. I know my cousin regretted it because she had 3 girls and said she should have tried one more time for a boy, but most people I know especially ones that have boys and girls don’t regret it. I remember hearing cindy crawford and jada pinkatt smith say they knew after their 2nd baby, they were happy with two kids. Than you have people like shania twain who said after 1 she was done, some people just know when they are done

  13. rye Says:

I can’t wait to see what they have and I am crossing my fingers for a girl since trista and ryan will be having tubes tied

  14. Hea Says:

Pretty family. But I don’t think I know who they are… so, my eyes drifted to the cute penguins. I love penguins!

  15. Brandi Says:

Elisa, last time around Trista had gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome which led to an emergency c-section while under general anesthesia. She wasn’t even awake while her son was born, her husband couldn’t be in the room, and she had a premature baby. If that’s not a rough pregnancy I don’t know what is.

Many congratulations to them and I wish them the best of luck with this baby.

  16. SARA Says:

Max is sooo cute!I have a bad day today but this photos make me feel better!I wish them all the best!

  17. FC Says:

Max is adorable. He’s just like any other baby his age. So curious and trying to understand and take everything in around them.

It’s cute, he has that look of, “Hmm, interesting…” in each photo, while his parents seemed to be having a blast.

  18. Laurie Says:

Wow, I’ve watched those two from the bachelorette, and now they are about to have another child! I wish her a safe and healthy pregnancy :) Max is so adorable!!

  19. gia Says:

must her mouth be open in every pic…ha

  20. Sharone Says:

Ok, while I agree that they are a cute family, I cant get over the fact how Trista keeps saying one thing over the other…first she said that they were trying, but they were surprised that she became pregnant, then she said she wanted a girl, but now says that she doesnt care. Geez, make up your mind!!

  21. Nina Says:

It’s every woman’s right to change her mind. What Trista said was that because it was so hard for her to get pregnant before, they weren’t taking any precautions for her not to get pregnant, so when she did, it was a big surprise. Then, too, her saying she wanted a girl was probably before her very difficult time conceiving and carrying Max, so, yes, after things like that happen, a person tends to put things into perspective and the baby’s gender doesn’t really matter anymore.

That aside, I love these guys! They’re so cute together, and now there’ll just be even more extra cuteness! Awww… :)

  22. brooklyn Says:

Max is very cute! I wish them nothing but the best!

  23. Amber Says:

I’m so surprised that she is telling so much about their private life to (what seems) anybody who will listen. I love the photos and I agree that they’re a cute family – but sometimes it’s nice to leave a little to the imagination.

I hope she has a better pregnancy than she did the first time around, though. I know how stressful it can be when things aren’t always perfect with a pregnancy.

  24. Nicole Says:

I absolutley love these two together! They have such a cute little family and I can’t wait to see their new addition in the spring.

  25. Doreen Says:

What’s wrong with Ryan’s legs? They look strange. Like they really don’t look like his legs! LOL

  26. SH Says:

I also thought the statement about having rough pregnancies was a bit premature. I agree with Elisa – it’s her 2nd pregnancy and she’s early into it. I have 4 kids and every pregnancy was different, every birth was different. Even the amount of time it took to get pregnant with all of them was different. While I understand she had a VERY rough time with the first…she shouldn’t base the 2nd time around on the 1st time around. She may very well have an easier time with this one – you never know.

  27. Sarah Says:

lol, Trista and Ryan seem more interested in the animals than little Max!

  28. Anne Says:

They were both so good looking on the bachelorette but now they look so much older. His legs look strange and he appears to have lost weight. The baby is adorable.
