Tori Spelling Advises New Moms to Take Their Time Losing Pregnancy Weight
Simon/Startraks |
With a plethora of celebrity moms fitting back into their pre-pregnancy jeans only weeks after giving birth, for others, losing those stubborn few extra pounds can become a bit discouraging. Only four months ago, Tori Spelling — who had just welcomed daughter Stella Doreen — found herself in the same situation as she admits to comparing her postpartum body with that of other new Hollywood moms. Who caught Tori’s eye? "I would look at pictures of myself and compare them to Jessica Alba, who had her baby [Honor Marie Warren] two days before me. I’d see photos of her two months after and go, ‘Look at her!’"
Determined to lose the weight without sacrificing her family time with personal trainers and strict diets, Tori instead turned to her husband Dean McDermott, their 19-month-old son Liam Aaron, and baby Stella for support. For Tori, "the best way" to getting back in shape has been to make her goal "a family affair," as the foursome spend time in the kitchen cooking healthy meals and outdoors staying active. After the birth of a child, women should look forward to enjoying time with their new family and not stress over shedding the baby weight, suggests Tori, who reveals she is "embracing the fact that it’s a struggle for me to drop the pounds." Approaching the issue with a new attitude, Tori shares that "it’s easier now because I’m not as focused on it," as she advises new moms to concentrate on the bigger picture.
"Take your time. If you get obsessed, you’ll miss out on great moments with your children."

Well, first, Jessica is about 8 years younger than Tori, so that’s an advantage…and also Honor was Jessica’s 1st baby and Stella was Tori’s 2nd. Another advantage to Jessica. Plus, it’s only been 4 1/2 months. Breastfeeding has a lot to do w/ it too. I have 4 kids and I was never back to “normal” til about the year mark. I breastfed for over a year with all of them and I was one that kept a few pounds on while breastfeeding. But I know that a lot of women find it easier to lose the weight while breastfeeding…not sure if Jessica is still breastfeeding or not…I know Tori isn’t.

Finally, a celebrity who tells it like it is about baby weight. I gained 55 pounds with my daughter, who was born the same week as Max Bratman and Harlow Madden. I’m naturally thin and dropped the weight after a few months, but seeing the celebrities drop it almost immediately really can bring you down- especially with the hormones. Kudos to Tori for reminding us that that the most important thing is your family, not your baby weight.

Oh wow, this is so great!!! CBB, you should forward this to every celeb mom out there! How refreshing to hear a Hollywood mom actually say she doesn’t want to miss precious moments with her children by spending all of her time in the gym. Way to go, Tori!!!!

It’s refreshing to hear a celebrity talk about the fact that her body isn’t PERFECT, especially after something as miraculous as giving birth! Honesty is always nice when normal people see the bodies of skinny little celebrities every day. Regardless of the fact that Tori says she’s still got some weight to lose, I think she is absolutely GORGEOUS! And good for her for choosing time with Liam and Stella over time in the gym. =)

I really support the therory behind Tori’s remarks…however, is it just me…or does Tori look pretty darn good for being 4 months postpartum? IMO, she has to be putting more than a little effort into it. Similar to “SH”, I am the mother of 4 and breastfed all for 1yr+, and it took about a year to “get back”.
Anyway…a congrats for spreading a fabulous message.

i second that nicole! i smiled when i read that tori said she didn’t want to miss precious moments while obessing over weight gain. its so not worth it. so many celebrities feel the pressure to lose weight right after a birth, it makes you wonder if they are spending any time with the little ones.its good to see photos of the mcdermott family together often walking or bike riding. weight loss is a slow frustrating process for some especially if you dont have the high dollar trainers. it should not get in the way of being a good parent.

I Love, Love, Love Tori. I was never really a fan of hers until I started watching her series on Oxygen. She seems so down to earth and grounded in who she is, which is no small feat for any woman.
I do not have children, but when I do I hope I will have the same attitude towards losing my baby weight.

First I have to say I love Tori. I was not a fan at all either until I started watching her show and then I couldn’t help but like her. She is a devoted Mom and reading her comments in this interview don’t surprise after watching her on the show with Liam. But I think what she said was great and more women celeb or not need to take her advice. When reading this post though I did think at first, “Uh she looks great 4 month postpartum, heck she just looks great in general!” But then I thought about it and we don’t see what’s under her clothes. I don’t mean that in a gross way, lol, I mean we all have flaws that we cover with clothing. I saw on an interview she said she’s still working at losing she’s just a strategic dresser lol. We don’t see if her stomach is flat again etc. I know for me my tummy looks nothing like it did before two kids and it’s a work in progress lol. So it’s easy to think oh she looks great and she does but she may be referring to the things we all can’t see.

I am so happy to see a celebrity being open and honest about this. I have to say I saw a picture on here the other day
http://www.celebrity-babies.com/2008/10/tori-spelling-2.html
and I noticed Tori still had a pouch just like I do and it made me feel better.
SH yes Jessica is still nursing or at least pumping. I saw a picture of her with a bottle of breastmilk last week.

Thanks Brandi, I thought Jessica was still breastfeeding. She may very well be one of those many women who say that the weight “melts off” when they breastfeed. I wasn’t one of them…I always had about 10 lbs. that I wouldn’t lose until I was done breastfeeding. But it usually didn’t matter w/ me because I’d get pregnant again…all my kids are between 18 and 22 months apart.
At any rate, Tori might be one of those women who are the opposite where she might have trouble shedding weight once she STOPS breastfeeding, and she only breastfed Stella for several weeks. (Not saying that’s a bad thing – it’s her private decision)

I watched the video montage on her shows website and she says she’s uncomfortable going in the pool with Liam because she’s afraid someone will snap a picture and it will be all over the place. So, I would agree that because of her strategic dressing there are probably things (ie. a stomach pooch) that we can’t see. I think it’s sad too that she feels she has to worry about it. You couldn’t pay me enough to be in the public eye.

It’s always a bad idea to compare your body to someone else’s. Everyone is different.
My mother had healthy babies but she had to start a diet to gain weight after her pregnancies. Her sister gained weight and it took time for her to get back to her post baby weight. They both were/are health conscious but their bodies responded differently.
Celebrities are under more pressure to look thin than the average person but I still wouldn’t assume they all neglect their children to slim down even though I’m sure some do. And I actually bet that the one obsessing about their bodies are not always the usual suspects (i.e. the thinner ones).

Way to go Tori!

i was surprised that tori had trouble losing weight after having her kids.she’s always been thin,so i just assumed it would melt off afterwards because of her fast metabolism.it’s also unusual to hear celebs compare themselves-usually it’s between us and them!what some people might not know is that tori is someone with a lot of irrational fears,obsessive-compulsive habits & worries a lot about everything in general.she is paranoid and very self-conscious so these comments don’t surprise me one bit.do luv her though-always have.

ang- I think Tori is comparing herself to Jessica because they had their babies so close together…I would say that would be a pretty natural thing to do no matter how obsessive/paranoid you are/are not. She probably did it during her pregnancy too.
November 3rd, 2008 at 6:27 pm
I like her more and more! I think she looks great, but it’s nice to know celebs worry and compare themselves just like we do. This is the kind of thing new moms need to read and see for motivation!

Well my sisters have had 4 children, and 3 children each and both naturally returned to their pre-baby size within 2 months of the births.
They did very little to no exercise.
I think it depends on your figure before the baby, the exercise you do during your pregnancy and the way your body just bounces back.
Some women are just lucky.
Others have to work for it.

I was under the impression that I had read that she quit nursing her daughter at 3 months because she wanted to lose the wieght and “couldn’t” while breastfeeding.
And now she says
“Take your time. If you get obsessed, you’ll miss out on great moments with your children.”
Hrm.

Nancy S- There’s a difference between simply wanting to lose weight and being obsessed with it.
Tori DOES seem to have a more laid-back approach to post-partum weight loss than some other celebs (Trista Sutter, for example).
However, perhaps you are referring to the fact that, by no longer breastfeeding Stella, Tori is missing a “great moment” with her. If that’s the case…I am very pro-breastfeeding myself, but everyone is different, and some people don’t consider not breastfeeding to be “missing out” on anything with their kids.
