Marathon Winner Paula Radcliffe is Thinking Babies

Janet Mayer/Splash News Online

Now that British marathon runner Paula Radcliffe has won the New York City Marathon three times, she is considering adding to her family before the London Olympics in 2012. The 34-year-old and her husband and trainer Gary Lough do not want their 21-month-old daughter Isla "to be an only child."

"Both of us would love to have another child. It isn’t planned in, like it will be at this date in this year, but at the same time we don’t want a six-year gap between them. But we have to have the luck to be able to conceive. Things just don’t happen as you plan them on paper."

If I’m not mistaken, Grete Waitz has won the NYC Marathon 9 times. Paula Radcliffe’s achievement is certainly impressive but she isn’t the ONLY woman to have won three times.

  2. GL Says:

That’s sad – there is nothing wrong with being an only child! In fact, I believe it’s preferable to having siblings.

  3. mk123 Says:

GL…lol…you must be an only :)
I always think that those who opt for one child, simply didn’t/don’t like being a parent that much, to go on and have another. Now, there are exceptions to this rule…obviously, fertility issues, divorce…
I know that I will recieve slack for this view, but my mind is made up, I think that it is a safe assumption to make.

  4. lolasmum Says:

GL, why is that sad? I didn’t find anything wrong with them making a statement about not wanting their daughter to be an only child.

Their little girl is so darling!

  5. Pencils Says:

It’s great to see Paula Radcliffe here instead of the same people over and over again (such as, the daily photo of Violet Affleck on her way to preschool.) Paula’s daughter is darling. I hope she does have another, a lot of women marathoners seem to be faster after having a child. Maybe Paula will get even faster after her second!

  6. NS Says:

I think Paula should do what she wants and not be concerned with what other people have to say! My two kids are grown, and I am very happy to have had two and not just one.

  7. Mary Says:

there is something to be said for having siblings. not that all only children are mal-adjusted, but i have run into ones whom u can tell dont have the experience of ever being denied anything in their life lol! i have siblings and i def prefer that to being an only child, even if it didnt mean that i always got things i may have wanted. i always had someone to play with, which was fantastic. and yes, i definitely learned how to compromise.

  8. LanLan Says:

From what Ive seen and the opinions of others I know, gnerally the kids who are glad to have been an only child and defend this view tend to be spoilt and slightly self centred (whilst being blissfully unaware of it as they’ve experienced nothing else); and those with siblings usually say they definitely want to have at least 2 kids so that their kids can experience the sibling bond they had.
