Nicole Kidman Shows Photo of Sunday, Says Connor Wants a Brother

A beaming and, at times, emotional Nicole Kidman appeared Monday on The Oprah Winfrey Show to dish on life with Sunday Rose, her 4-month-old "miracle baby" with husband Keith Urban. Following an ectopic pregnancy, a miscarriage, and "so many years" spent trying for a baby without success, the 41-year-old actress admits that she had begun to believe that she was not meant to have a biological child.

"I had two beautiful adopted children, and just thought, ‘Well that’s not my path. That’s not what I’m going to get to experience.’ And I [was] fine with that.’"

Because the pregnancy came as "a shock," Nicole says she is acutely aware of her good fortune. "I talk about it because…there’s a huge number of women who have experienced miscarriage, and it’s very traumatic," she explains. "I was very very lucky at this stage in my life to be blessed with a baby girl." Her two children with ex-husband Tom CruiseIsabella Jane, 15, and Connor Antony, 13 — are lucky to once again welcome a baby sister, having welcomed Tom’s daughter with wife Katie Holmes, 2 ½-year-old Suri Cruise, in 2006. To hear Nicole tell it, her older two children have taken to their new roles with ease.

"They’ve very used to having children around. They grew up with cousins, and Suri, and now Sunday Rose. But Connor is like, ‘I want a boy. That’s great and everything mom, but why don’t you have a boy?’"

When asked by host Oprah Winfrey whether she and Keith will try for a son, Nicole simply smiled and replied: "God’s plan."

Describing Sunday as "gorgeous" and the spitting image of Keith, Nicole showed the audience a small photo of her sleeping daughter she carries in her wallet. She teared up while recalling Sunday’s birth, revealing that with a female doctor, a female doula and numerous female relatives present, Keith was the only male in the room. "And then Sunday Rose came out screaming," Nicole recalled. "That is such a good sound."

"You’re like, ‘Oh thank you God, she’s okay.’ It makes me cry. Don’t even get me started. I think something happens when you give birth…I cry so easily now. I don’t know why."

From the sound of things, Nicole’s emotional response began even earlier; she shares that she cried during her first ultrasound. "When you see that little heart beating inside of you…Wow," she says. "That’s an extraordinary thing to experience." As has been previously reported, Nicole’s father first suggested the name Sunday in honor of Australian patron of the arts Sunday Reed. The couple "loved" the name, but for more than that reason. "That’s our favorite day," Nicole explains. "If you’re lonely Sunday is a very lonely day, and if you’re happy and you’ve got your family around you, then Sunday is a beautiful day…So our baby’s called Sunday."

  2. sweetheart Says:

What a precious baby! Congrats to Nicole and Keith. I think it’s dreadful the comments made on the Huffington Post about Nicole and the baby. There should be a moderator involved to take off those absolutely hateful comments. Everyone on here is so pleasant and respectful – one of the reasons I enjoy reading the posts on this site. Keep it up! :-)

  3. Kelsey Says:

Love Nicole, love Keith, baby Sunday is beautiful (and I love her name too!). They have such a great story and I am very, very happy for Nicole; she seems genuinly content!

  4. Christa Says:

What a gorgeous baby! I really liked the name Sunday before but now that I have heard her reasons behind the name, I think I like it even more.

  5. Shannon Says:

Oh my goodness, what a sweet baby girl!!! Those cheeks are wonderful! I am so, so, so happy for Nicole and Keith. They are so blessed to have each other and that baby. After everything they’ve been through, they deserve it! I love the name, BTW. I think it is so pretty. A lot of people think it’s so weird. I’m also one of the few people who loves the name Apple, though!!

  6. Lissette Says:

Great interview! Gives me hope when she discusses her fertility issues. Cute family!

  7. Sarita Says:

The baby looks very cute with those big cheeks.

Wasn’t it just a week ago that she said she didn’t want to show a photo and now she is promoting her new film the photo comes out….

  8. Jae Says:

  10. Mom of Boys Says:

    Lissette,
I just wanted to tell you that miracle babies do happen.

I was diagnosed with severe endometriosis when I was about 18.I had gone through an abnormal amount of surgeries to fix the problem, put on all kinds of meds and injectables. When I was 23 I got pregnant with thte help of clomid but ended up having 2 miscarriages. The I had a 12 week ectopic pregnancy, since they found it way late, my tube burst and they ran me to emergency surgery and removed my tube. My other tube was almost entirely blocked and not reapairable.

Well my doctor told me that it is likely that I will not have children. He said he had very little hope to offer to me of having my own child. It was hard to swallow but I had to.

Well all of a sudden for some weird reason I felt pregnant(my periods hardly ever came). So I was visiting my cousins house and told her. So we bought a test. I took the test and when I saw that I was pregnant I passed out in her bathtub.

It was a very hard pregnancy! Lots of things went wrong. But the baby was always fine.

So I now have 2 amazing little boys who I consider my miracle babies. So there is always hope.

Since the pregnancies were very very hard on my body and my doctor advised me that I probably shouldn’t go through another pregnancy, I did decide to have my tubes tied.

But you can always have hope.In fact my cousin who also has endometriosis just privately adopted a beautiful baby girl. The adoptive mom just fell into her lap after 7 years of trying.

    Keep your head up!

Mom of boys – what an insprirational story you have and thank you so much for sharing it. It’s people like you who really do give hope to those with troubles. Congratulations on your little ones.

  12. Lissette Says:

Mom of boys, thank you for sharing your beautiful story! I appreciate it when people discuss their fertility struggles and so happy for them when they succeed! Congrats on your children!!

  13. Brandi Says:

Sarita, All she said was that they didn’t want to do a magazine photoshoot. I see no problem with her sharing her personal photos when she is ready (which she apparently was).

  14. Jeannette Says:

What a sweet photo! I love how Nicole said that Keith took it and she made him print them out. And she does look like Keith to me! Keith-ette, that’s so cute too!

  15. Colleern Says:

Keith also has a song titled “Raining on Sunday” about spending the day in bed and having a lazy Sunday.

  16. mmh Says:

I don’t know. I got the feeling Oprah kind of forced her into it… Of course, not an Oprah fan, so I could be misinterpreting…

  17. Melissa Says:

I commend Nicole for speaking of her fertility issues (and Mom of Boys too). I believe that miracles happen as well.

  18. Me Says:

I love hearing stories about how some couples assume they’re infertile and in the end they have beautiful children. My sister-in-law was told she would never be able to have children. Less than a year into her relationship with my brother, they were pregnant with a boy! They tried for 5 1/2 years for another. After several miscarriages and lots of trying, they’re due to welcome a baby girl in December! Never give up hope!

  19. DiamondGirl Says:

I saw the show (Hugh Jackman – yummy !) and Nicole did say she brought the picture to just show Oprah, but didn’t see Oprah backstage, so she left it in her wallet.

I agree that Oprah pretty much made sure the picture got shown. Even while Oprah was holding it for the camera to catch, Nicole was already reaching to take it back.

I never saw her showing off her other kids when they were babies either – I don’t think she likes to do that.

  20. CelebBabyLover Says:

What rubbed me the wrong was wasn’t the fact that Oprah apparently made her show the picture, but that she asked Nicole if she and Keith are going to try for a boy (since Connor wants a brother).

Now, in and of itself, that isn’t bad. What irked me is that Oprah seemed to completely forget that Tom and Katie might also end up giving Connor a little brother.

Also, in an interview about a week ago, Nicole said basically the same thing about Connor wanting a brother, and then went “Katie?” That makes me think that she doesn’t neccesarily want/intend to have another child. Then again, maybe Oprah didn’t see that interview, and maybe Nicole made that comment tongue-in-cheek. :)

  21. Jennifer Says:

    Awww…Sunday Rose is such a cutie! :-) What a precious photo – she’s a beauty!

  22. Michelle Says:

Well, Nicole knows that at her age and with her history, the likelihood of her having another child is slim. I’m sure she doesn’t want to discuss it with people. I liked the way she “tossed” it over to Katie. I think it shows that there is somewhat of a healthy relationship there.

  23. Sarita Says:

Nicole is smart enough to know that when she gives the photo to Oprah on the show Oprah is going to hold in front of the camera. It’s all about the ratings and Nicole has been in the business long enough to know that.

  24. Jade Says:

CelebBabyLover Nicole had trouble conceiving and calls Sunday a miracle baby so I don’t think she believes she could be pregnant again.

  25. blackrose Says:

so what if she wants to show her baby’s picture.. if i had her i would love to show it to the whole world.adorable baby!!

  26. CelebBabyLover Says:

Sorry if I confused people! What I meant was that I don’t think Oprah should have asked Nicole if she and Keith will try for a boy, as it’s very likely that Nicole may not get pregnant again.

Plus, I didn’t like that Oprah seemed to ignore the fact that Tom and Katie could have a little brother for Connor, too (and chances are that it will probably be Katie rather than Nicole that has a second baby).
