Kate Winslet Proud of Imperfections

When the British tabloids suggested Kate Winslet’s recent photoshoot for Vanity Fair was airbrushed, the 33-year-old actress hit back with a statement that she was "furious" with the insinuation. Now, in a new interview with The Daily Mail, Kate says that when it comes to her body and her public image what you see is what you get — and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

"I’m doing all right. I’ve had two kids. I’m 33. I don’t look in the mirror and go: ‘Oh, I look fantastic!’ Of course I don’t. Nobody is perfect. I just don’t believe in perfection. But I do believe in saying: ‘This is who I am and look at me not being perfect!’ I’m proud of that."

While many women might struggle to identify Kate’s perceived imperfections, she laments having a "crumble belly" and notes that her "boobs are worse for wear after two kids." Not a fan of the gym, she instead prefers to use a Pilates video in the privacy of the home she shares with children Mia Honey, 8, and Joe Alfie, 4 ½, and husband Sam Mendes. With a family motto of "keep it simple," Kate reveals that she won’t employ a cook or a trainer because "life gets too complicated" when there is "staff running around." She adds,

"I don’t want that for my kids…I want them to put their own dirty clothes in the laundry bin and bring their plates from the table to the sink. It’s as normal as we can be."

At the time of the interview, Kate was contemplating an upcoming trip to Los Angeles with Sam, without the kids. Describing herself as "completely traumatized" by the prospect, Kate said she is taking every conceivable precaution! "We’ve never both gone and left the kids, so we’re going on separate planes — flying out and back on separate planes," she explained. "’It lessens the odds and makes me feel better."

"I know it sounds ridiculous, but I will go to any lengths to make sure my kids are OK."

While being a working mom may have made Kate feel conflicted at one point in her career, she’s since made peace with the balancing act. "I don’t beat myself up any more about going to work," she said. "It doesn’t mean I’m being a bad mother just because I want to go and do my job sometimes."

Mia is Kate’s daughter with ex-husband Jim Threapleton; she has been married to Sam since 2003. Her next two films — Revolutionary Road and The Reader — are already generating considerable Oscar buzz, hitting theaters in January 2009.

That sounds refreshingly normal for someone so famous. I think it is great to have the kids clean up after themselves and not depend on staff to do everything for them. This teaches kids responsibility and respect for things. I wish everybody could raise their kids like this.

  2. kate Says:

She expects us to believe that the cover isn’t airbrushed??!! hahaha

  3. NELLA Says:

I love Kate, she’s a great actress and sounds like a great mom also. I think she’s raising her kids right, even though she has the money to splurge on cooks/trainers etc. she wants to teach her children to do things themselves and be responsible. Even though a person may be rich, I don’t think a child should be spoiled & not know how to do simple things in life that everyday people do. Also, I love how open she is about imperfections and I think she looks great.

  4. Léa Says:

Well Kate, I don’t think she has been airbrushed ! Kate Winslet is really fr from what and she is beautiful ! The pictures may have been a little airbrushed for her eyes, and whiter teeth or something but I don’t think they made her look skinnier. ! ( i’m sorry I don’t know if my words are correct, I’m not english)

And, She is just stunning ! I’m glad to hear she raise her children like responsible and normal kids !

I lov her, and I can’t wait to see revolutionnary Road ( ok, tha fact there’s is Dicaprio may be the point )

  5. Liv Says:

The cover is airbrushed. All magazine covers usually are. She has also stated before that there was a lot of make up. But that doesn’t mean she’s not beautiful. I also like how she talked about her imperfections and trying to raise well-adjusted kids.

  6. MB Says:

Didn’t Kate sue some magazine for airbrushing her a few years back? She has always been adamant about not wanting to be airbrushed. So yah, I believe that as far as she knows, she wasn’t airbrushed.

  7. Lis Says:

I just love her. I could read her interviews all day long. So humble!

…and about the airbrushing thing, she did say that they darkened her skin tone, etc. (which a tan can make a person look thinner), but didn’t airbrush her shape. Like MB said, she is very adamant about airbrushing…

  8. Anais Says:

I wish people would stop picking on her about her looks/weight. Because she is one of the few (in my opinion) truly “naturally” gorgeous actresses out there, and good for her.

  9. LanLan Says:

Ok we get it now – she’s against airbrushing, diets size zero models etc etc. Seriously, whenever I hear anything about this woman she’s bragging about how she’s proud that she’s a ‘normal’ weight and not thin and how she’s a good role model to her kids. Well it was refreshing to hear the first time round but now its getting tiring. PLUS there ARE people who are naturally thin! Sometimes I get the impression from her that she thinks the reason many people are thin is because they starve themselves…

  10. SH Says:

Well, really, there wouldn’t be too much to airbrush in this picture – all you see is her face, neck, wrists, hands and from her knee down to her feet. No butt, no boobs, no stomach – those are the things one would airbrush/photoshop anyway.

I also think that while she may say she didn’t have airbrushing, I almost didn’t recognize her from all the makeup she’s wearing! Makeup and airbrushing could be the same thing if you really want it to be…
