Brandy ‘So Glad’ To Be a Mom

When she embarked on motherhood at the age of 23, songstress Brandy welcomed more than just a daughter. In a new interview with Vibe.com, she says of 6-year-old Sy’rai Iman Smith, "we’re like best friends."

"I like her as a person. She makes me laugh. So much insight comes from her. She’s six going on 18. We sing together.  We crack jokes…I’m just so glad that she’s mine."

That her relationship with Sy’rai’s father, producer Robert Smith, did not survive is unfortunate — but not an open wound for either party. Robert, who has since gotten married and has three other daughters, tells Vibe.com that while "the relationship didn’t work out" the "bottom line is the friendship." For the committed co-parents "the common denominator" remains Sy’rai. Adds Robert,

"You can’t be so mad at somebody who gave you that kind of a gift…At the end of the day, we have a beautiful child, and I’m the happiest man on Earth. That’s really the logistics of it. No drama."

It’s a sentiment echoed by Brandy herself, who has been single for three years. She admits that she has moments of wondering "What’s going on?" and "Oh my God, am I old?" but says she’s happy for now to channel all her energy into Sy’rai. "I think that’s why I’m so close to my daughter — because I don’t have a relationship to balance it out," she explains. "I’m so clingy with her, she’s like, ‘Mom, let me breathe.’"

  1. J Says:

Robert has 3 other kids already? that was quick

  2. ERICKA Says:

I can’t believe Sy’rai is already 6. I remember the reality show Brandy & Roberts did on MTV when she was pregnant and when she had the baby. Gosh…6 years already. -nods- I feel old.

Wasn’t it later found out that Robert and Brandy were never married? That it was just a cover because she got pregnant…to protect her “image”.

  3. marisol818 Says:

    “we’re like best friends.” oy.

  4. phoebe Says:

She seems like a good mum and her daughter is supercute.

  5. dsmom Says:

I know marisol, I always cringe when parents say that they are best friends with their kids.

  6. Jenny Says:

How can she smile like that knowing she took a life? =(

  7. MissAllisonJenny Says:

I’m glad they’ve set a peaceful example for their daughter, by not fighting publicly.Althought this is incorrect “who has been single for three years.” The two of them pretended they secretly got married and then it all came out. Unless she just meant “I haven’t had any boyfriends in three years” [and I'd swear she was dating a basketball player not too long ago]

  8. Devon Says:

She was engaged to a basketball player, but they broke up in 2005, so I think she’s right in saying that’s she’s been single for 3 years.

  9. NLT Says:

Wow, when did people start picking apart every celebs comments? Wouldn’t it be horrible if that was done to us.

You: “No, I’ve never been there.” Responder: “Well, actually, you have. You went on Thursday, October 31, 2007.”

    Irritating.

  10. Crystal Says:

I agree too with the other posters. I hate it when parents are “best friends” with their children. There is a very definite line between parent and friend. My mom used to say my children have lots of friends and don’t need another. I’m their parent not their friend! I couldn’t agree more!! :) On another note I love Brandy and am glad her and her ex are making a point to be committed for their daughter!

  11. T Says:

I see nothing wrong with her comment. My mom and I have always considered each other our best friends as far back as I can remember. our bond could continue into the next life we are so tight. Because of our relationship I felt and knew that I could go to her for anything and talk to her about anything. I kept no secrets from her and I believe it was because I looked at her as more than a domineering parental figure. Don’t get me wrong she was mom first.
