For our babysitter, we pay the going rate here ($12/hour), leave her money for a pizza, and let her use our computer, leave out rented DVDs etc for the kids are in bed. We also always remember her birthday. We’ve managed to keep her for three years so far so I guess we’re doing okay.

I completely disagree with the blogger’s comments about finding a sitter or nanny on Craigslist. I have found all of my nanny jobs on CL. It is so much easier than going through an agency. I would rather have a closer relationship with the people I work for without bureaucracy, be able to exchange gifts and things with the kids, make my own schedule, and get a decent wage. I have been background checked and have a ton of references to offer parents. We do many e-mails, reference checks, phone interview, and then meet in person. CL can be a great place if you are smart about using it.
