Mariska Hargitay: My Timing Has Been Perfect

After losing her mother, actress Jayne Mansfield, in a deadly car accident when she was a toddler, the feelings of guilt and vulnerability that constantly surrounded Mariska Hargitay followed her well into her adult years. Admitting to Ladies Home Journal that she "just didn’t think I was very good," Mariska explains that the lack of her mother’s guidance resulted in low self-esteem. "All my life I’d had this problem with following through, not feeling that I was worth it. Not having a mother makes you think, ‘If only I’d been better, she wouldn’t have left me,’" reveals the actress.

Tides changed, however, when in 2006 Mariska and her husband Peter Hermann welcomed their first child, August Miklos Friedrich. Calling her now 2-year-old son her "oxygen in my water," a proud Mariska is convinced that living her life at her own steady pace — without a specific timeline drawn out — is ultimately what has granted her great happiness. "I’m so grateful I was given these opportunities at a point in my life when I could really handle it all," says the 44-year-old.

"I got my gig late, got married late, had my kid late — and none of it came a minute too soon."

With a successful 10-season run as a detective on her hit show Law & Order: SVU, Mariska reveals that she would not be against hanging up her hat and dedicating herself full-time to her family. However, with no immediate plans to completely part ways with the series, Mariska may simply be in need for an extended break as the couple are currently "trying" to make August a big brother!

   August is one of the cutest babies ever, and I hope mariska is one of the next celebrities to announce she is expecting. I can’t imagine losing a mom so young, mariska has been through a lot in her life.

   I LOVE Mariska so much!! She is a wonderful person, you only have to look at everything she’s done fr abuse survivors to see this. I love the Herman-Hargitay family! August is the cutest little button ever!!! Would be so happy fr her if she became pregnant agian, even happier if they wrote it into the series!! Xx

    my 3 year old knows my love for Mariska, everytime i watch svu she yells “MISKA”

    Mariska is a celebrity because who I have great admiration. WANT TO HEART OF HER will have another child, a girl who knows that is as beautiful and gender as ALS

    Mariska is my hero for all that she does outside of work. Its nice to see her on here. I would love to see her have another child, August is so cute!!! I would hate to see her leave SVU, but you gotta do what you gotta do. I give that woman some props for dealing the way she has with what life has given her, I know its not easy, believe me.

    I like Mariska and August is adorable. But having a second pregnancy at 44?!? I wish her the best but its highly unlikely. I can’t believe how many celebs are having babies so much later in life now. The health risks to both mom and baby must be huge at that age. It’s not the norm that mother nature intended.
