Kate Hudson: Ryder’s a Ski Bum
Hector Vallenilla/Pacific Coast News |
Sounds like Kingston Rossdale isn’t the only celebrity baby hitting the slopes this winter! According to Kate Hudson, her 4 ½-year-old son Ryder Russell learned the ropes last year and has been tearin’ up the mountain since. Spending Christmas in Aspen with her family, Kate dropped her preschooler off for a lesson last winter, then returned to the bunny hill so that Ryder could show her his new skills. Problem: Ryder wasn’t in the area.
"I started panicking a little bit because Icouldn’t see him anywhere, and the [instructor] cameover and said, ‘Oh, actually, he’s up on the mountain.’ I’m standing there in my skis and I’m looking up and all of a sudden Isee this little kid in camouflage and I’m like, ‘No!’" Kate remembers. "Heis just zooming down the mountain and I started to cry."
These weren’t sad tears though — Kate was struck by how independent her little boy is becoming! "I grew up skiing, and then you see your kids ski and there’s a freedomin it, a freedom in that that you recognize in them," the actress, 29, explains. "A confidencethat kids start to get when they do things like that. Itwas a big little moment."
However, that doesn’t mean Kate and ex-husband Chris Robinson are planning to let their son turn into a daredevil! "Now he’s going to be a terror," Kate laments. "So the helmet is on. I’m goingto put … those rubber things on the bottom of his skis so that hedoesn’t go too fast!"

Watching kids ski is an amazing thing. I worked with children of Ryder’s age at a ski school for six months and I still can’t get over how good they can be. They have no sense of fear!

Oh yeah…there’s always that defining moment with almost every kid.
You’re happy that they are experiencing the challenges of life and yet you want to keep them safe and little.
I used to joke that maybe I’d let my son go downtown on the bus by himself when he was 30.

I totally agree, Jenny. I’ll be riding up the lift watching kids no older than 4 or 5 absolutely flying down indermediate and even black diamond hills in amazement. Skiing is one of those things that I think just inherently clicks with some people, and to a lot of kids it’s like ducks to water. Maybe we’ll see pics of Ryder skiing around Christas?

I was in Aspen last year when Ryder and Kate were there. I watched him go down the little bunny hill for kids. Super cute in his little outfit! Good to get them out early, so they don’t have any fear.
