Cate Blanchett and Jack White Agree the World Needs More Kids
|
|
Clearing up any ideas that her 6-month-old son Ignatius ‘Iggy’ Martin was named after the rocker Iggy Pop, actress Cate Blanchett tells fellow parent and The White Stripes singer Jack White that her baby boy’s "very Catholic" name is actually in honor of Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. However, while Iggy’s name follows the old-age feel of that of his two brothers — Dashiell John, 7, and Roman Robert, 4 ½ — Cate laughs that in appearances they are quite different as baby Iggy has begun to acquire a "little red fringe" of hair!
As Jack, who has daughter Scarlett Teresa, 2 ½, and son Henry Lee, 16 months, explains to Cate the close bond that has formed between the two siblings — "they’re holding each other’s hands right now" — the adults come to an agreement that, despite the world being overcrowded, more children are needed! After all, jokes the 33-year-old singer, "you can always give them away if they don’t work out." While Cate laughs that "redheads" would be good candidates to give away, the pair come to the realization that both of them are parents to little carrot tops! "We’ll keep those, yeah," notes Jack. However, to savor each moment, which never "last long enough," Cate is insistent that the two need to expand their families even further.
"That’s why we just have to have more of them. The world is so massively overpopulated, but if you’re halfway decent-looking and you make nice ones, then I think it’s probably your responsibility to make more."
Dashiell, Roman, and Iggy are Cate’s children with husband Andrew Upton, while Scarlett and Henry are Jack’s children with wife Karen Elson.

I agree totally and I really admire the Saint Ignatius! I hope she has more children! I love the name Ignatius, too.

I just spotted Cate and all her boys at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney today. She looked radiant and all the family was cosy and relaxed. No fuss, no minders, just a happy family sitting in the coffee shop, getting the kids organised. So lovely.

I know that this post was probably just one of those off-the-cuff remarks we all say on the occasion, not trying to be politically correct, but just wanting to slip in to a conversation how wonderful we think our children are… I get it.
But as a pediatric nurse, who just spent her entire day at Children’s Hospital – LA and visited a little girl whose parents decided they didn’t want her because of all her medical problems and was later adopted by one of the nurses who cared for her throughout the years she was hospitalized, reading this post really stung.
Cate Blanchett definitely wasn’t trying to attack abandoned children in hospitals, but perhaps, especially during the holiday season, we could devote a little more time to others and a little less time indulging our egos.

I saw some pictures of Jack White’s kids on a photo site, but they were too small. I was hoping you guys would include them in this post.

What’s so bad about redheads, eh?
December 12th, 2008 at 10:38 am
Cate lives in Hunters Hill in Sydney, which is really, Really close to st ignatius riverview, a boys private high school.I´ve always assumed that was their inspiration.

she didn’t mean any harm, she was just trying to be funny…and there are some of us who could devote less time to internet sites and more time to helping others as well, it’s all perspective.
December 12th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
I din’t find their attempt at humor funny whatsoever.

‘While Cate laughs that “redheads” would be good candidates to give away,’
Why??? Is that a joke? I don’t understand. Is it a cultural thing in the US? Maybe I don’t get it because I’m a European. I think red hair is beautiful. What a racist comment!
December 12th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
Marjo maybe you should leave your own misguided opinions at home. What was the need for the US snide remark? That was completely unnecessary.
And just for the record Cate is Australian and does not live in the USA.

What kid of Jack’s has red hair? Karen is not even really a redhead….anyone ever see a picture of their kids?
December 13th, 2008 at 12:23 am
Marjo
Racist? Are you kidding? Two of Cate’s children have red hair just so you know, so cool your jets
December 13th, 2008 at 1:27 am
I totally agree! We do need more children in this world to keep a sense of innocence and to keep us grounded.
December 13th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Really? We need more children in the world to keep a sense of innocence?? And what do you suggest we do once they are grown ups? Dress them in onesies and proclaim them very large children?
Newsflash: kids grow up. How about we take care of the millions and millions of kids who are already here so that they grow up to be sane, caring adults??
December 13th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Murphy get over yourself. Blanchett can have as many kids as she wants. Obviously she is quite capable of taking care of them.
You people kill me, stop taking internet articles as absolute facts.

There are pictures of Jack’s children. I made a comment about it on here earlier but uh they didn’t publish it. I saw them on a photo site.
December 14th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
pictures on what site?
do they really have red hair?
December 14th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
I’m just saying that as long as there are children in the world there will be something to smile for and to live for. There will be a need to keep “public” places as decent and clean as possible.
December 14th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Scarlett had curly black hair like Jack’s. It was hard to tell with Henry cuz the picture was so small, but it looked dirty blonde. I told this blog about the pictures. I thought they might post them.
December 14th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
s_borodin, what photo site did you see pics of Jack’s kids? I’ve never seen them and am curious. or would you be able to email them to me?
December 15th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
From previous pics I find it very unlikley that Scarlett has black hair. When she was about 6 months it was very fine and almost white blonde.
And just to clear up any confusion it is quite common for people to make jokes about redheads. Not saying its right but my uncle jokes that they’ll have to have another cuz the youngest is a redhead. And this is in Ireland where redheds aren’t exactley uncommon. If you look at Jack’s lyrics (or his wife!) his love for redheads is clear.
December 15th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
It looked black to me or very dark brown. Maybe if this blog would post the pictures like I asked them to we could get a better look.
Jack’s kids wouldn’t have red hair. Karen is not a natural redhead.

You were right her hair is not black. It’s dark brown. I must need glasses.
December 15th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
s_borodin , what was the name of the site you saw the pictures on?
December 16th, 2008 at 11:52 am
Tim, so I was wrong thinking that Cate was from the US. Sorry about that. But this is not the first time I have seen some “jokes” about redheads in.. well, let’s say, not US but western / “Anglo-Saxon origin” countries/nations, or people whose ancestors came from central Europe. I wonder why? What is the history behind this, or the reason? You corrected my mistake about her home country but didn’t address the actual issue at all: What is it about redheads…? I have never seen any negative comments about them in my home country, even as a joke. Must be a cultural thing that no one is wiling to explain or even admit.
