Actress Katie Holmes and daughter Suri Cruise, 2 ½, stop to pose for photos and sign autographs Wednesday afternoon. The two were outside New York City’s Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, where Katie is currently starring in the Broadway play All My Sons.

For more of Suri, check out our gallery showcasing her cutest dresses! Family photos from dad Tom Cruise’s personal collection are also featured in this week’s PEOPLE.

Smart Mama! If Suri is there when Katie starts talking to a few people, she’ll get more used to the crowds as time goes on. It’s inevitable with this family that they will always get attention and it’s better for Suri and any subsequent children that they are as fearless as possible when dealing with the fuss. Cute picture!

  2. brannon Says:

I guess I just don’t understand purposefully exposing her to so much press? Lots of other “a-list” stars have children who are not constantly thrown into the spotlight? Julia Roberts, Brad and Angelina, Reese Witherspoon, Beckham boys? Sure they are followed by paparazzi but it just seems different for some reason? I know she mentioned there not being underground entrances and what not but surely there are back doors or other means? Just kind of feels like she’s on display a lot. Seems sad (and not very safe! I’d be terrified)

  3. Kate Says:

I agree there are certainly ways of getting around the constant exposure of celeb kids. Plenty of famous parents manage to keep their kids out of the spotlight, or at least not in it as much as Suri. Yes, there is always going to be that curiosity, but there are certain times when it’s really not necessary for the kid to be out in the middle of it. At least in this pic Suri looks content. However, on other sites I saw pics of her with Katie on a Williams-Sonoma shopping trip last night where she is clearly distraught. She was squinting her eyes, convering her ears, looking completely miserable. It was also raining & she had on the usual short-sleeved dress with no tights & no shoes, but I digress.

  4. angie Says:

I agree she should get used to crowds, but I also agree that there is no need to expose her so much to the press.

I bring you the link to the photos that Kate refers:

Poor little girl, barefoot in the cold!

  5. Lis Says:

Oh my goodness! I just looked on the site suggested by Angie (http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/QG3KcOB2WUO/Katie+Suri+Leaving+Williams+Sonoma/9DBrkWnRdta), and I am outraged! What in the world are they thinking? I usually keep my mouth shut when it comes to how she is dressed but that is just absurd!!!!

  6. Lauren Says:

“Sure they are followed by paparazzi but it just seems different for some reason? I know she mentioned there not being underground entrances and what not but surely there are back doors or other means?”

The problem with that as far as the theater goes is that the “back door” actors use to leave is called the stage door, and it’s where fans wait with cameras and playbills to meet the actors and have autographs signed. With a play as high profile as Katie’s, there’s bound to be a crowd at the exit. That said, there are loopholes actors can to take to getting around exiting that way, just as I’m virtually positive there are plenty of ways Tom and Katie could minimize the constant attention surround them. It’s completely obvious that they eat it up and milk it for all it’s worth-regardless of how Suri feels about it.

  7. Jane Says:

Well, Katie doesn’t look too happy about all the crowds and photographers so I wouldn’t say that she is milking the publicity. I think it’s horrible that Suri is followed by the paps almost everyday.Fortunately, katie’s play will be closing in less than a month. We don’t seam to see Cruises when they are in CA nearly as much as we do when they are in NYC. So hopefully, they will get some peace and privacy once they go home.

  8. Danielle Says:

That’s the Williams Sonoma right by my apartment! Sorry, I get excited when stars shop at my stores.
I just wanted to say that it was REALLY warm here while it was raining on Wednesday. I had my son in just a hoodie in his stroller and he was miserable and hot. it was nearly 70 degrees.
I’m usually one to criticize her choice of attire for Suri, but lately they seem to be dressing her more appropriately.

  9. Kate Says:

I think it’s odd that the paps are so crazy over them in NYC. I’ve heard that the paps in LA are much more predatory than those in NYC. Celebs often say they enjoy living in NYC because they can “hide in plain view.” And it seems true if you consider the lack of pics of other celebs who live in NY but only get snapped by the paps every now & then, & even then it’s not the same type of frantic environment that seems to always surround Suri.

  10. Artemis Says:

I still think it’s not anybody’s business how she dresses her child. They were probably out for a second, I don’t think its “terrifying”.

  11. Gabrielle Says:

I have to agree with Lauren. I’ve seen pictures where Suri is distraught by the paparazzi, and Katie and Tom just smile away.

  12. Sarah Says:

Wow, I think people are going to find something to pick on this couple for, no matter what. I guess the monotonous “they’re bad parents because she doesn’t have a coat even though I’m not there and have no idea what’s going on or what the weather’s like or any other details of this child’s life” thing has been run into the ground to the point it seems silly so we have to find something else to pick on. When she was younger, everyone complained that they kept her hidden because “there must be something wrong with her” – now they expose her too much!! Never mind the fact that people freak out claiming he keeps his other kids hidden because they are not photographed a lot. Tom and Katie have been one of the most photographed couples in recent years so it’s no surprise the paparazzi is going to be on top of them more than they are other celebs. I’m sure if Brad and Angelina resided in the US full-time, we’d get the same sort of shots. Other celebrities are just not as sought after. When I see Suri pictures, I’m just impressed that they have their daughter with them, she’s not stuck off with a nanny across the country or something like so many celebs tend to do

I am not a Tom or Katie fan for various reasons, but I’m not going to pick on the way their raise their child because of it or because it may not be the way I see fit to raise mine, like so many here do. If you are that much of a concerned citizen, go find some children who truly are abused and mistreated to worry about…though I have to warn you, you have to actually leave the confines of your comfy, anonymous computer.

  13. ann Says:

It seems clear to me that Tom is more than willing to use his family for publicity and that virtually no effort is made to shield Suri from the paps. Look at People magazine this coming week where they share their personal family photos. And, by comparison how often to we see Bella and Connor? I think I saw one picture of them when they were children and then nothing else until Nicole and Tom were divorced. Its Tom and Katie’s choice to make but it isn’t the choice I would go with.

  14. Amber Says:

I read in an interview that Suri doesn’t wear a coat, not because Tom and Katie don’t put one on, but because she’s being a little kid and just doesn’t want to! There was a photo taken of her smiling at Tom and Tom was quoted as saying “She looks so mischievous, she kept saying ‘I’m gonna take my coat off!’” I think its a delicate balance, they have to promote themselves as a brand because thats how they make the money but they also have to protect their child. I don’t think I could do it any better.

  15. mamamah Says:

What is it about tom, katie and suri that makes people so angry. i have never seen any comments recent or otherwise about a celebrities’ child, the way she or he dresses, reacts to paparazzi, shoeless or not that has caused such furor and criticism and rage. I read comments on other websites from the moderators who had to step in to calm all this anger against katie. She is a new mom. This is her first child. She is entitled to learn as she goes along. Were all of you this perfect in private and public with your children? There is an elitist tone here when it comes to mothering. There is no blueprint, you know. We all made mistakes. We all learned from them. Let’s show some kindness and try to relate. Katie is human. She spends time with Suri and it’s obvious Suri loves her Mom. Look at the positive and quit the nit-picking. It’s trite and small.

  16. J Says:

is it just me or does Katie look really skinny? look at her right cheek and her neck. her cheeks are really sunken in and you can see her collarbone stickin out really bad. she’s always been pretty thin, but she looks really skinny now. I don’t get the fascination with them. maybe because they seemed to try to go overboard with their relationship and now not a day goes by that they aren’t photographed. just because you’re a celebrity doesn’t mean the public needs to see photos of you and your family every day. maybe it’s because I’ve never liked Tom cruise (and dislike him even more after he lost his mind when he started jumpin on couches),but what’s so great about him?

  17. Aidan Says:

Well said to Sarah, Amber and mamamah.

I don’t think any one of us could do any better than Katie, raising a high profile child because she & Tom are so high profile. All our mistakes out in the open… everyone expecting us to fail & raise some demon child… it just seems like such a difficult atmosphere to live & succeed in. I don’t think we can really imagine what it must be like.. and we probably won’t know until children like Suri are old enough to write memoirs about their lives. ;)

It’s really a shame that with all the laws and regulations our country has, there isn’t be a distance one. We could get just as many adorable photos on this website with long lenses, without being so invasive. Not that I’m really one to talk, typing in a comment box instead of actually trying to do something about it, but I would vote in favour of that law, and I’m sure many of my fellow CBB regulars would as well.

  18. Carol Says:

Suri has on shoes in some of the pictures. Maybe she’s crying because her shoes came off? She certainly seems to like those shoes.

  19. CelebBabyLover Says:

Okay, I looked at all the pictures Lis and Gabrielle posted, and in virtually all of them, I actually think Suri looks more tired and/or shy (and this is coming from someone who was very shy as a kid herself!) than upset to me.

Also, we have to remember that she’s a toddler, and there are about ten million and one things that can set a toddler off. Not to mention the fact that, if she WAS indeed sleepy in some of those pictures, sleepy toddlers tend to be more cranky. Who’s to say it was the paps, or just the paps, that set Suri off in those photos?

I’m inclined to believe that something else set her off before the paps started snapping, and the paps just made it worse.

I also don’t understand this double-standard with Suri. Tom has said that Suri is actually quiet content around the paps (waving at them, saying “Hi”, etc.), and he and Katie get blasted for taking her out.

At the same time, Brad Pitt has said that Zahara is scared of the paps (he’s said that the poor little sweetie even gets scared in the car, thinking the paps are going to take pictures through the car window, which, unfourtnately, they have attempted to do). Yet he and Angie don’t get criticized at all for taking her out and about (in fact, it is when they leave Shiloh, who seems content around the paps, at home, that they get blasted, but I digress) depsite her fear of the paps.

Anyway, I just got my copy of PEOPLE magazine today (I’m a subscriber), and I can’t wait to read Tom’s interview and see the pictures from his private collection!

  20. Erin Says:

I’m honestly sickened lately by pictures of Suri out at events like this. It’s your job as a parent to protect your babies’ innocence and I would never bring my child into this kind of situation – a bunch of screaming fans – and then hanging around, signing autographs, surely touching the kid. CREEPY!

  21. TracyG Says:

Last week, we saw photos of Kingston Rossdale in a TANK TOP in 50 degree weather and not ONE person batted an eye or commented that he could be inappropriately dressed. Sure they were in LA, but 50 is 50 no matter where you are! It was very mild in NY on Wednesday, it was almost 70 and higher in some other places! But yet, here we find more Katie and Suri bashing. I JUST DO NOT GET THE NIT PICKING OF THIS CHILD AND HER PARENTS!!!!

I understand that people don’t like Tom for his beliefs, his religion, his comments or his lifestyle, but people need to BACK OFF and leave their parenting skills alone.

I agree with Sarah, it’s so easy to do from behind your computer screen. Like I’ve said before, I bet you wouldn’t go up to Katie or Tom’s face and say “Your daughter needs a coat on, shoes on, tights on you bad parent you!”

It’s getting SO old and really bordering on abusive to this couple.

Oh and before I get the “It’s MY opinion and I have a right to say it speech”…save it.
