Sound Off: 2008, The Year in Baby Names

Tags: Names, Sound Off

We saw it all this year — from Naviyd and Viggo to Sunny and Harlow — and while we loved many of the names celebrities bestowed upon their children in 2008, there were a few we perhaps questioned, too. Our friends over at Nameberry, authors Pamela Redmond Satran and Linda Rosenkrantz, took some time to analyze the best and worst baby names of 2008, and are sharing the results with CBB! While we don’t judge — every parent has a solid reason for choosing a name that’s special to them — it is fun to take a look back at the year that was.

First for the good news. Here are the names which in their opinion had just the right combination of originality, charm and substance:

CLEMENTINEEthan Hawke & Ryan Shawhughes
Full name: Clementine Jane Hawke. This name projects the image of a sweet but strong, prim but pretty heroine of a Victorian novel, and brings to mind the song lyric ‘Oh my darlin’ (never mind that her shoes were number nine). It was previously a starbaby selection of Cybill Shepherd and Claudia Schiffer.

HONORJessica Alba & Cash Warren
We applaud this choice that moves beyond the more common Puritan Virtue names like Grace, Hope and Faith to one that projects an even more righteous image, but is rarely heard in this country. Honorable decision!

KNOX & VIVIENNE Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt
Theaward for best twin names of the year goes to the always inventive butnever quite over-the-top serial baby namers, the Jolie-Pitts. Knoxcontinued their tradition of boys’ names ending in ‘X’ (Maddox and Pax),and also has family connections to Brad’s grandfather, as didVivienne’s middle name, Marcheline, in honor of Angelina’s mother.Runner-up twin names: Coldplay drummer Will Champion’s lively Juno & Rex.

LOTUSRain Pryor & Yale
Inthe name garden overgrown with Roses and Lillies, Violets and Daisies,it seems fitting that the granddaughter of the late comedian RichardPryor would have a more exotic flower name. With its languorous feel,it holds intriguing significance in several cultures.

SUNDAYNicole Kidman & Keith Urban
Anunusual but sunny day-of-the-week name, inspired by an Australianartist’s patron named Sunday Reed, in tune with other current calendarnames like January, May, June and August, as well as the seasonalWinter and Summer. Some people did think it strange that Sunday wasborn on a Monday.

And this year’s less charming names are:

BRONX MOWGLIAshlee Simpson-Wentz & Pete Wentz
Poorlittle Bronx got nothing but Bronx cheers when his name was released, especially when paired with the name of the Disney-fied Jungle Bookboy. If his parents thought this New York borough name would catch onthe way Brooklyn has, they’re in for a big disappointment.

BUSTERMichele Hicks & Jonny Lee Miller
Ishe a bulldog?  Is he a prizefighter? No, he’s a baby, whoserambunctious name will not do much to encourage his sensitive side. Anexample of the alarming trend toward giving doggy names (Lucky,Princess) to babies.

KADENCE CLOVERTony & Lhotse Hawk
Itcould just as well be Cadence Klover, within the paradigm of using theinitial letters ‘C’ and ‘K’ interchangeably, leading to regrettableinnovations like Kasey, Kassidy, Karolyn, Kaleb and Kameron.Fortunately, the trend seems to be waning.

MAXX  Scott & Tracie Hamilton
Taking Max — which already means “the greatest” — to the max. INXS!

PEANUT  Ingo Rademacher & Ehiku
The General Hospitalsoap star explained that this had been the nickname he and his wifeused “when [the baby] was in mommy.” OK, good luck explaining that tohim when he’s six feet tall and applying to Princeton.

What are your choices for best names? Remember to keep your comments kind and respectful — these are babies we’re talking about!

  1. Lis Says:

My favorite celeb baby name of 2008 was definitely Harlow (Winter Kate Madden)! Which is fitting because she is my favorite celeb baby of 2008!

I think it’s a beautiful, femine, unique name without being too goofy or over-the-top! Oh, and the baby is just to die for! So darling!

  2. Philippa Says:

I love the names Honor and Lotus!

  3. phoebe Says:

I’m in agreement with Nameberry here, my favourite was Clementine, and my least favourite was Bronx Mowgli. Clementine is such a beautiful classic name, but I still can’t deal with Bronx Mowgli!

  4. Mom Of Boys* Says:

I am absolutely a huge fan but um why is Zuma Nesta Rock Stefani Rossdale not on this list????

  5. Meghan Says:

I love unique but classic names.

    Levi
    Harlow Winter Kate
    Vivienne Marcheline
    Max Liron
    Cassius Aveory
    Jacob “Jake” Emerson
    Stella
    Gia
    Orion
    Piper Addison

    Least Faves:

    Zuma Nesta Rock

    Shaya Braven
    Sunny
    Valentine
    Honor
    Bronx Mowgli
    Sunday
    Buster
    Birdie Leigh
    Murphy Claire

  7. gigi Says:

I thought it would grow on me but I just cant get used to the name Honor.

  8. Whitney Says:

how far back are we going?
Sunny Madeline is pretty bad – But Bronx and Zuma are the worst……Zuma yes is a popular beach in Los Angeles but also more of the tourist spot then the many other native beaches around – plus I don;t get why Gwen Stefani thinks she is so connected to Bob Marley – yes he is legend but give up the obsession….

The best name is Olive Cohen – first of all she is a doll and her name just fits – I also like Sage – But my favorite celeb buddies are Frankie (Amanda Peet’s little girl) and Frannie (Jason Bateman’s georgeous girls)

I am just glad the names Emily, Jessica, Grace, Jennifer have come out of rotation!

  9. Janis Says:

    Peanut is just. . . . WRONG.

  10. t. Says:

Fave Harlow I think that it is a fantastic name its cute enough for a little baby but also strong enough for when she is ans adult

    Least Fave
    there is a tie
Buster and Peanut because those are DOG names!

  11. Whitney Says:

DO NOT PUBLISH oooh didn’t even remember Birdie Leigh- and a friend of mine is the godmother (despite being Jewish)

They will all end up being like Gypsy Rose Lee and leaving their parents to be burlesque dancers

  12. babyboopie Says:

DO NOT PUBLISH My favourites were Braydon Hart, Levi Alves, Honor Marie, Knox and Vivienne, Max Liron and Harlow Winter Kate (only because it suits her!)
I also quite like Zuma Nesta Rock.

My worst were Bronx Mowgli and Peanut Kai, horrible names!

  13. Janis Says:

I do not mean to be insulting. I just do not understand the name Peanut. Is there anyone out there who likes the name Peanut and could shed some light on what you like about it? Help me understand.

  14. kelly Says:

The worst one of the year for a little girl is Jagger Joseph Blue. Hands down dislike that one.

I do like Harlow, Shaya, Cassius, Zuma, Kadence, and Vivienne

    I dislike
    Clementine
    Honor
    Bronx
    Knox
    Sunday
    Lotus
    Sunny
    Murphy
    Birdie
    Max

    But

  15. Stephany Says:

I completely agree with this list! I also did not like Kadence Clover. I’m not a big fan of names that should begin with a “C” beginning with a “K”. It looks tacky.

Some of my favorites this year are: Levi, Harlow, Stella, Honor, Max, Gia, and Anja.

Some of my least favorites this year are: Zoie, Ignatius “Iggy”, Vivienne, Zuma Nesta Rock, Henry, Felix, Jagger and my #1 least favorite: BUSTER!

  16. Amber Says:

DO NOT PUBLISH I agree with the person who asked why Zuma Nesta Rock wasn’t on the list. I mean, to me, its just as bad, if not worse than Bronx. I had higher expectations of Gwen because I love the name of her first son. I was so disappointed.

I don’t understand the name Peanut either. Disgusting. Give your kid a real name. Goodness.

I love the name Harlow, and I think Sunday is kinda cute, but I can’t get used to Honor either. Yuck.

Birdie Leigh is a joke of a name as well. And Buster is a complete dog name.

  17. k Says:

I agree on the bests – I loved Honor and Sunday, particularly. And I am surprised Harlow didn’t make the best. Those three are so pretty, I think, and unusual without being, well, Zuma.

And I have to echo Mom of Boys above – how does Zuma not make the worst list? For me Peanut and Zuma would be far and away the front runners for this year.

  18. kelly Says:

Peanut is surely a contender for worst baby name of the year. And I don’t like Lee Ryan’s baby’s name (Rain Amethyst Lee) on a boy.

    I did like
    Vivienne Marcheline
    Jasmine Ines
    Henry Story
    Harlow Winter Kate
    Willow Rose
    Nahla Ariela
    Orion

  19. Pam Satran Says:

We decided to limit our list to ten, but it was definitely hard to narrow it down — there were so many candidates for best and worst. It’s fun to see other people’s picks!

  20. kelly Says:

For some reason I don’t find Peanut to be that bad! I think it’s because I used to love this one TV show when I was a kid and the character’s names were Peanut, Butter and Jelly. Peanut always seemed the most normal out of all those names and he was my fave.

    Sounds stupid, I know!

  21. Sarah Says:

I think the worst celebrity baby boy name of the year is a tie between Zuma Nesta Rock and Bronx Mowgli. Okay, Peanut and Buster aren’t any better.
The worst girl name has to be Jagger Joseph Blue, hands down.

    I also dislike

    Max
    Viggo Moriah
    Shaya Braven
    Atticus
    Archibald
    Felix

    Birdie
    Gia Zavala
    Easton August
    Harper & Finley
    Nahla Ariela
    Sawyer & Coco
    Sunny
    Harlow
    Honor
    Maddie

My favorite 2008 celebrity baby names are Clementine Jane and Brendan Joseph.

  22. Devon Says:

    Favourites:
Harlow Winter Kate – Uncommon but classic and it has a timeless feel to it.
Max Liron – The meaning behind the name is beautifu.
Maximilian David & Emme Maribel – Fashionable and trendy but classy.
    Gia Zavala – Exotic sounding.
Archie Arnett – It’s quirky and cute.

    Least Favourite:
Shaya Braven – It’s quite a mouthful to say.
Jagger Joseph Blue – I understand their though behind it however as someone growing up with a more masculine sounding name, I was always assumed to be male when in fact I am quite female! She’s got a lifetime of explaining and comments of “Oh, I thought you were a boy.”
Zuma Nesta Rock – Again, I understand the meaning behind it but one has to think that if their child becomes a doctor or a lawyer, are they going to be comfortable with a name like that? Are they going to be taken seriously?
Coco Trinity – It reminds me of something I would never want my daughter to be.
Bronx Mowgli – It’s a mouthful and what if he doesn’t want to be a rocker?

  23. nicole 27,chicago Says:

PEANUT??? HA HA HA. THAT’S GREAT.

  24. Linda Rosenkrantz Says:

Wow–poor Zuma. It looks like he would have won if this had been a poll. Taken by itself, without his additional names, I just don’t find it that bad, It was a place name that had meaning for his parents, as Kingston did, and I think it has a nice, energetic sound (unlike Erykah Badu’s choice of Puma).

  25. Kate Says:

I personally don’t think Zuma is so bad. When I first heard it I thought it was a shocker, but Zuma has really grown on me – not so much the nesta rock bit – but KIngston isn’t referred to as Kingston James McGregor all the time, so I don’t see it as a biggy! I also think that Zuma and Kingston go really nicely together, and I think it is important that names of siblings go together – not matching, but they need to complement each other and fit.

My fave names have been Sunny Madeleine, Gia Zavala and I do like Clementine.

For me, Bronx Mowgli takes the cake – it just does not flow for me, and I cannot fathom how they can call a beautiful little baby Bronx – it is so hard!

  26. Kate Says:

Oh, I forgot about Amy Poehler’s baby – Archie Arnett, what a fabulous name!

Mark Wahlberg’s newest baby, Brendan Joseph, the name just does not fit -it doesn’t go with Ella or Michael to me.

  27. JB Says:

I wanted to name my daughter, born in March, Clementine, but my husband just couldn’t get on board with it. Needless to say, it is my favorite on the list.

  28. Nicole Says:

I have to admit, I wasn’t crazy about Brad and Angelina’s twins’ names at first, even as a fan! But it seems like they just fit.

As for Zuma – I think it’s his middle names that make that name so crazy! However, I think he will probably grow into it like Kingston did.

  29. Nicole Says:

Oh, I forgot Bronx Mowgli. That middle name ruins it for me. Brooklyn I can get behind, but for some reason, the Mowgli part of that name just tells me Pete and Ashlee were looking to name their kid something crazy. I can’t take anything they say seriously because of it, honestly.

  30. Estel Says:

    My favourite:

    -Levi Alves
    -Viggo Moriah
    -Harlow Winter Kate
    -Stella Doreen
    -James Monroe
    -Shaya Braven

    The worst:

    -Jagger Joseph Blue
    -Peanut
    -Buster

Maybe it’s important the fact that I’m Spanish an I live in Spain. Some of the names that you the americans don’t like, sound cool for me

  31. whooa! Says:

when i heard the name Zuma i didn’t like at ALL, but somehow, it started to like it, i would never name a son of mine like that, but it fits him. I thought that zuma was the worst name of the year until I heard Bronx Mowgli, and so Zuma started to like me. One of the worst names of the year, also Knox Leon. I hate it! but still the worst name for girl… and the award goes to… Jagger Joseph Blue. How could you name a girl jagger? My best friend’s DOG name is Jagger. and it’s male! I also dislike Levi, Max Liron, Orion, Archibald, Gia, and Clementine Jane sounds like my grandmother ages.
but so the names i do like we’re: Harlow Winter Kate, Sunday Rose, Ava (caroline rhea’s daughter)Jasmine ines, Maddie Briann, sunny Madeline…. and so and soo..

  32. Natasha Says:

I’m with you guys about Jagger Joseph Blue. Just a horrible name for a girl.

I think just Bronx is okay, but Bronx Wentz? Nope.

Viggo Moriah is one of my very least favorites also. I really did not like most of the celeb baby names this year.

Zuma has actually grown on me, but I still don’t like the Nesta Rock part.

Honor is such a cute baby but I just cannot get used to it. I think it’s because it doesn’t sound how it’s spelt and I hate that.

I’m in the minority but I also don’t like “Gia Zavala Damon”, it doesn’t flow like “Isabella Damon”

I also strongly dislike Clementine, I’m not up for naming babies after fruit!

After all that negativity, I guess I should say I do like Harlow, Knox and Vivienne.

  33. S.A.M Says:

I don’t understand how the name Apple is considered weird by many, but the name Clementine (also a fruit) is considered the best name of the year! hahaha…

  34. phoebe Says:

Lol, the list comes out and the gloves come off! I agree with most people on here actually, it seems like the same names keep coming up again and again. On the worst list, we have a two horse race between Bronx Mowgli and Zuma Nesta Rock (Bronx still wins it for me, it makes me shudder, really!). Then we have the craziness of Peanut and Buster also racing against each other. There seems to be a lot of love for the likes of Harlow and Honor, both of which are adorable. This should’ve been a sound off!

  35. Amber Says:

    I like:
    Sunday
    Max
    Francesca
    Willow
    Paloma
    Piper
    Brendan

    I dislike:
    Knox
    Zuma
    Bronx Mowgli
Naviyd- because it looks like it should be pronounced Nav-ee-yid
    Viggo Moriah
    Eastin
    Brixton
    Peanut
    Buster
    Parfait- Just Kidding!
    Twiggy
    Cashton
    Major
    Prianna Lee
    Jagger Joseph Blue
    Avis- I think rental car
    Steele
    Storm
    Brody Jo
    Archie
    Lotus
Clementine- How many times do you think that poor child will have to listen to “My Darling Clementine” before she goes bonkers?

  36. Issa Says:

Two that I loved were Piper Addison (although I forget whose daughter she is), both names I have considered in the past. Also Martie Maguire from the Dixie Chicks named her daughter Harper Rose, which I love.

I don’t like Bronx, Jagger, Viggo Moriah and I can’t stand Maddie as a given name. It’s cute as a nickname for Madison or Madeline, but as a nickname it’s just silly.

  37. K Says:

I think the worst 2 names of all time are Bronx Mowgli Wentz(just makes me cringe) and Zuma Nesta Rock.Come on your kids are going to be beaten up and hate you someday.Peanut is just tacky on so many levels.
My fave is Harlow, very classic Hollywood sounding.

  38. Natasha Says:

Haha phoebe, I’m waiting for people to come in here and tell us what horrible people we are for cutting up the baby name choices!

  39. Jane Says:

At first I wasn’t crazy about Harlow Winter Kate, but I love it now. Harlow and Winter are both uncommon names (though Winter seems to be gaining some ground now) but not over-the-top, and Kate is so classic and pretty that it really balances out.

Knox and Vivienne I was indifferent to, still am to Knox but now I find Vivienne to be another really classy name. I really like sort of old-fashioned girly names, like Sophia and Amelie, so Vivienne definitely grew on me. I also like Clementine for the same reason.

Have to say I can’t get on board with Honor or Archie… Just my personal preferences; they’re not bad names but I don’t like them.

  40. Alannasmom Says:

I love Harlow, Stella, and Gia. A lot of the others I strongly dislike, but there is no accounting for taste I suppose. Even Bronx sounds like an actual name, so whatever. But Peanut….that poor kid. This borders on child abuse, and I don’t think it’s cute in any way. I think his parents are mean to do that to him, honestly.

  41. Kate Says:

Bronx and Zuma are the worst!

Knox, Vivienne, Levi, Harlow and Sunday are the best.

  42. Halle Says:

Bronx Mowgli is quite possibly the most awful name I’ve heard. Ever. There’s a part of me that still thinks it’s a joke, or maybe I’m just hoping lol. I can’t deal with either Bronx or Mowgli, and the name doesn’t fit with the surname either. I love Harlow, I think her whole name just flows beautifully. I’m still iffy about the Jolie-Pitt twins, not sure if I like those names or not. Sunny Madeleine might be my favourite actually.

  43. ReyesPhile Says:

I love name Enzo (new son of Annabeth Gish). Sounds stylish and interesting. And Zuma sound not bad.

The wrost name for me it’s Bronx Mowgli (poor little boy), Felix (son of Gillian Anderson) and Shaya (I’m russian so I even can’t read it correctly).

  44. SMore Says:

    Names I like:
Harlow, Knox, Vivienne, Bronx, Kadence Clover, Stella, Felix, Oliver, Oscar, Archie, Henry, Harper, Finley, Sawyer, Piper, Murphy, Easton, Atticus, Maddie.
    Names I just don’t like:
Honor, Clementine, Scarlet, Jaggar Joseph Blue, Zuma Nesta Rock, Peanut, Buster, Shaya (for a boy), Moriah,(for either sex), Coco, Nahla, Birdie, Jasmine.

  45. Tegan Says:

K, some of you are being a bit mean. I mean, personal opinions are fine, but stil…

    I love the names

    Zuma
    Harlow
    Bronx Mowgli
    Nahla

  46. Sydney Says:

Amber, who named their child brixton??? It’s a really rough area of South London and the LAST thing I would call my child, even after Peanut!

The hands down winner in my eyes is Harlow Winter Kate, I just love everything about it. It suits an old school Hollywood screen siren, a school teacher, a baby, a teenager, it is just perfect!

My worst is Bronx Mowgli Wentz, it is just ugly to say and look at on the page!

Unlike most I quite like Jagger for a girl, I am not even averse to Buster.

Most people seem to LOVE Sunday Rose, but I hate it as all I hear is Sunday Roast, and think of roast beef, roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding. Maybe it’s just an English thing and she won’t get teased in US.

  47. AJ Says:

    Top Ten for the year:
    Harlow Winter Kate
    Honor Marie
    Shaya Braven
Bronx Mowghli (I love it. I love the meaning of his middle name for the couple)
    Gia Zavala
    Levi Alves
    Anja Louise
    Max Liron
    Stella Doreen
Francesca Christine (Amy Jo Johnson’s daughter)

    Worst Ten for the year:
Valentino and Matteo (Ricky Martin’s twins)
    Nell Burton
    Sunday Rose
    Zuma Nesta Rock
Clementine Jane (just not a fan.)
    Naviyd Ely (ugh)
Zoie Laurelmae (Not a fan of the first name. And what happened with the middle name? Couldn’t decide on one so they made one up? Stephanie Tanner, that’s rude.)
    Viggo Moriah
    Ignatius Martin

  48. Lauren Says:

    Favorites:

    Harlow Winter Kate
    Vivienne Marcheline
    Francesca Christine
    Shaya Braven
    Max Liron

    Least Favorites:

Zuma Nesta Rock (there is really no excuse for that name-just ugly imo)
Jagger Joseph Blue (for a girl? Really? Josephine Bleu was too difficult of a compromise?)
Buster Timothy-If Johnny Lee and Michelle consider that a “normal” name, I shudder to think what they’ll do in order to be “creative.”
Bronx Mowgli-the middle name ruins any cool factor the name would have had otherwise.

    And, bar none the worst:

Peanut-those parents should be ashamed of themselves.

  49. missy Says:

    I like:
    Zuma
    Bronx
    Murphy
    Max
    Easton

I didn’t really like any other celebrity baby name this year, but I think the worst is Honor

  50. Erica Says:

Call me biased, but Bronx Mowgli has grown on me. Yes, it doesn’t flow very well with Wentz, but it’s just kind of hit a chord. I also really like Honor, Sunday and Gia. The only ones this year that I didn’t really like were Zuma, and Peanut. I just couldn’t imagine calling someone Peanut outside of a nickname. But to each his own.

  51. Vivi Says:

Worst: Peanut Kai, Trig, and Bronx Mowgli (!!!) Sorry, parents, but what lead you to name your beautiful, precious babies like that!
Best: Clementine Jane, Francesca Christine, Anja Louise, Isabel Ruby, Colette Zoe, and Kieran Lindsay
    JMHO

  52. Lauren Says:

I can’t believe I forgot one of my favorites-Anja Louise. I think it’s gorgeous and a perfect combination of unique and classic.

  53. k Says:

I forgot to note, one of the things I love about the name Honor Marie is that Jessica and Cash gave their daughter Jessica’s middle name. I like that kind of pass down, maybe because my parents gave me my mom’s middle name, too! I always liked that. My brother is a junior, and so I am that way a little. :)

  54. Devon Says:

Tegan, I don’t think people are being mean just stating that they don’t like the name and some have given reasons for it. Everyone is going to have an opinion on someone’s name and I haven’t seen anyone here say anything really nasty…if there had been, it wouldn’t have been posted!

I forgot to add to my list of favourite names is Enzo. Not only is it fun and exotic sounding, it’s the first name of Enzo Ferrari, the founder of Ferrari and the name of one of their cars. My husband and I are big car lovers and I wouldn’t be surprised if we had a son named Enzo and a daughter named Shelby!

  55. annie Says:

I love Harlow Winter Kate, and my favorite boys name is Braydon Hart.
My son is Braydon James and I think its just perfect.

I disagree with Kadence Clover and discriminating against the K’s.
My sons name is Kameron and everyone I know likes the spelling better with a ‘K’
but thats just my opinion! :)

  56. angie Says:

    Names I liked:

    Olivia Luna
    Harlow Winter Kate
    Stella Doreen
Honor Marie (Together they sound great,Honor by itself , mmmm)
Sunday Rose (in english they sound pretty, but as I speak spanish, if they are translated, sound really wierd, Domingo Rosa, ugh)

    The ones I dislike:

    Rain India
    Knox
    Levi ( I can´t pronounce it, it´s Lee-by or Leh-bee)

and the worst of all.. Bronx Mowgli… reminds me so much to the jungle boy, and Bagheera, Baloo, etc…, and no comments about the Bronx.

    JMHO.

  57. angie Says:

I forgot a name that I don´t like almost in the same level as Bronx Mowgli: Maddie Briann.

I think is a name that is hard to be taken serious because it sounds like a nickname, a diminutive, like some part is missing, I don´t mean to be rude, it´s just my opinion.

  58. Amber Says:

    Sydney-
Mike Dirnt of Green Day named his son Brixton.

  59. Ems Says:

Hey you forgot about Twiggy Zilli! Where does that little girl rank? (poor kid)

  60. Kelly Says:

    My faves (That i remember)

    Kadence
    Lily
    Stella
    Harlow
    Honor
    Brayden

    (Im forgetting some i know)

  61. Sasha Says:

Oh, I love Clementine! And Sunday Rose, Harlow, Vivienne, Willow, Shaya and Max. Such sweet names.

  62. cara Says:

I’m surprised not many people have mentioned Maddie Briann. I love Jamie Lynn’s baby’s name.

  63. kelpy Says:

    Fav 2008 Celeb baby names…

Harlow Winter is a pretty name and it suits her too.
Sunday Rose – so fitting: a beautiful name for a Mothers wish come true :)

Viggo is my top fav of the boys.
Naviyd gets my least fav vote of all.

And there’s still a few more 2008 baby names to come….

  64. Freya Says:

    My favourites:
    Vivienne Marcheline
    Isabel Ruby
    Sage Florence
    Max Liron
    Ignatius (’Iggy’) Martin
    Archie
    Henry Story
    Valentine Anthony

    My least favourites:
    Bronx Mowgli
    Zuma Nesta Rock
    Peanut
    Buster
    Viggo Moriah
    Naviyd Ely
    Rain India
    Major Harris
    Levi
    Knox Leon
    Egypt

    Shaya
    Maddie Briann
    Jagger Joseph Blue
    Sawyer

  65. Shirelle Says:

Where’s the name Harlow Winter Kate! I Love that name! If I have a daughter I am gonna name her Harlow

    I also like
    Honor
    Levi
    Zuma Nesta Rock
    Jagger

    Dont Like
    Bronx Mowgli

  66. camille Says:

    best names of the year:
zuma at first didn’t like it too much, but now i found it so beautiful and it fits him and harlow winter kate is so classic and beautiful. the worst: bronx mowgli
love to you ash and pete so much, but i don’t like the idea of naming babies like towns or neighbrhoods, whatever.

  67. kelpy Says:

    Ref: the song Darling Celementine

While it’s not everyones cup of tea, it is a pretty name for a girl – and I’d rather have a song to my name than spend my life correcting spelling or pronouncation, as some celeb children will definitely be doing!
Not naming names of course (of the parents) but they know who they are :)

  68. shalay Says:

    I REALLY like:
    Kadence Clover
    Clementine Jane
    Harlow Winter Kate
    Harper Rose
    Brendan Joseph
    Nahla Ariela
    Gia Zavala
    Sunny Madeline
    Henry Story

Wouldn’t name my kid this, but to each their own:
    Sunday Rose
    Honor Marie
    Jagger Joseph Blue
    Shaya Braven
    Knox
    Valentine

    Names I just don’t get:
Bronx Mowgli – it just does not flow nicely at all!
Zuma Nesta Rock – It sounds more like a rock album than a person’s name.
    Peanut – ’nuff said.
Buster – much more of a nickname.

  69. brannon Says:

Love Knox and Harlow. Personally a fan of the classics – so Clementine is beautiful and Henry is perfect. Zuma and even Bronx are growing on me but I really dislike Shaya and Honor is my absolute least favorite.

  70. Denise Says:

Perhaps I am old fashioned, but I really dislike names that no one can pronounce or spell…I like celebs who choose “normal” (though what is normal today really) names for their children such as Brendan or Max or even Piper. When I see that someone has named their Zuma Nesta Rock or Jagger etc. I just think, “That’s bonkers but each to their own.” I guess you really can name your child ANYTHING.

Some of my favourites this year have been Max, Felix (particularly paired with Oscar. Most people will know who I am referring to), Maddie and Honor.

  71. Beth Says:

They are childrens’ names. If they don’t like their names as they get older, they can ask to be called something else. Or legally change the name.

    I love them all!

  72. Mary-Helen Says:

    Best names:
    - Max Liron
    - Harlow Winter Kate
    - Honor Marie

    Worst Names
    - Knox Leon (it just sounds like a mobster)
    - Peanut Kai
    - Archie Arnett

  73. Mia Says:

    Favorites:
    Knox
    Vivienne
    Gia
    Jasmine
    Samuel
Sunday (Has grown on me since)

    Not so favorites:
    Peanut
Max (I just think it’s too common)
    Zuma
    Shaya
    Buster
    Brendan

  74. Meagan Says:

The ones I really like this year were….Sunday, Bronx(not a fan of his middle name but that was their decision), Knox,Harlow Winter Kate(it just fits so well together), Kadence Clover, Finley, Sawyer, Piper and Easton.

The least faves on my list were Clementine, Iggy, Honor, Vivienne,Peanut(if it was a nickname then ok), Archie, Valentine(for a boy def not), Zuma Nesta Rock,Joseph Jagger Blue(not for a girl). There are alot of names that werent my faves but these are of course my opinions only. I mean some people may not like the names of chose for my children Emilea (its Emily just spelled different) Laine, Brady Joseph and Zachary Tarver…but they are mine and those are theirs Best of luck to all who have been blessed this year and the year to come.

  75. emily Says:

Ever since I’ve heard it, I’ve had a hard time with Nahla. In Hindi, the same sounding word (can’t type it in devanagri script! :) means a sewage canal. Not to mention the silent H.

I love Clementine, Sage Florence, Vivienne, Stella, Olivia Luna, and Isabel Ruby.

  76. Mia Says:

    Also forgot to add:

    Favorites:
Iggy (I’m a huge Iggy Pop fan, I think that’s a pretty cool name).

  77. Jessica Says:

    my list for ‘08

    best

    Nahla Ariela
    Harlow Winter Kate
    Max Liron
    Knox Leon

    Worst:
Bronx Mowgli, I assumed it would grow on me.. it has not.. i feel i have to sound it out everytime i read it, partly because im still in disbelief, but each to their own.

  78. Tammy Says:

I really love the name Easton FOR A BOY ( my is 9 months old) not a girl.
Really don’t get naming a baby girl an old name such as Clementine. But everyone has their opinion—-

  79. Shannon Says:

I loved Harlow Winter Kate, its creative, pretty, and unique without being weird. I think she’ll grow up loving her name.

My favorite boy name this year was Archie. I think with a name like that the kid is bound to be cool.

I think my least favorites would be Bronx Mowgli and Honor Marie.

  80. Jake's Mama Mia! Says:

The winner of all winners is my son’s name, which Courtney Thorne Smith snagged…

    Jacob Emerson!
It just sound so good together.

A name we also thought of before deciding on the above, was Jameson Avery.

My personal cringe of names for celebs this year was:

    Bronx Mowgli.
    Poor guy.
I also thought this would grow on me, but it hasn’t.

  81. Lisa Says:

“regrettable innovations like Kasey, Kassidy, Karolyn, Kaleb and Kameron. Fortunately, the trend seems to be waning.”

Wow, someone is really angered by the letter K. My nephew is named Kaleb and I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. That line was a bit insulting, to be honest. With the ridiculous things people are naming their children, it’s a bit odd to find fault with simple and nice names just because they start with the wrong letter.

  82. CelebBabyLover Says:

My favorite celeb baby names of ‘08 are:

    Stella Doreen
    Maddie Briann
    Harlow Winter Kate
    Maximillian David
    Emme Maribel
    Max Liron
    Honor Marie
Levi Alves (and FYI, I’ve always heard Levi prounuced as “Leev-eye” like the jeans)
    Nahla Ariela
    Sunday Rose
    Olivia Luna
    Nell
    Samuel Kai
and my top fav celeb baby names of 2008: Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline.

Now for my thoughts on some of those names. I don’t see anything wrong with Maddie as a given name. My mother also has a “nickname” first name (albeit one that has also been used as a given name for years) and it is a beautiful name that suits her perfectly!

I also don’t see the big deal over Zuma. No, it’s not something I would name my kid, but it suits Gwen, Gavin, and their family perfectly!

As for Knox and Vivienne, well, I’m a big fan of the Jolie-Pitts, so I guess I might be a little biased! Anyway, like Zuma, Knox isn’t something I’d name my kid, but it fits the Jolie-Pitts perfectly. It goes great with Maddox and Pax, and it sounds so much like a Brad and Angelina name that that was the reason I believed the report of the birth when it was still a rumor.

I also believe they pronunce his middle name the French way (Lay-own) rather than like “Lee-on”, due to the fact that they spell Leon with an accent mark over the E.

I LOVE the name Vivienne, and Marcheline is so sweet being it was also Angie’s mom’s name! I also love her nickname of Viv.

  83. Corinne Says:

My favorite pick for a boy would be Atticus (Summer Phoenix & Casey Affleck’s son). This name is so cool! Of course I have a thing for all the names coming from “To kill a mockingbird”.
The choice is much tougher for a girl, nothing really stands out in my opinion.

  84. M. Says:

I simply adore sisters Aurora and Winter Aria.

Being a new mother myself, I know how difficult it can be to choose a name befitting the newest addition to a family.

With so many options out there, not one name will ever appeal to everyone.
What is important to remember is that these people took the time to think of a name that they believe best represented the life they created.
    To each their own!

  85. Laura Says:

I happen to LIKE Jagger Joseph Blue and Zuma Nesta Rock :) They can both shorten their names or use nicknames if they choose to, in later life (e.g. “Jo” or “Rock”)…

I was given a common name and have always disliked it. I think it’s nice if children can have an unusual name, but with some option of shortening it to something more mainstream-sounding if they dislike it, or if they are bullied at school.

    LOVED:
    Knox Léon
    Vivienne Marcheline
    Harlow Winter Kate
    Lotus
    Archie Arnett
    Henry Story
    Orion

    DID NOT LOVE:
    Bronx Mowgli
Sunday Rose (seriously awful combination – the headlines and the blogs only proved it)
