Ani DiFranco Has a ‘Trick Baby’

Every parent tends to brag about their child, but Ani DiFranco believes she has something special in daughter Petah Lucia, 23 months — her baby makes others want children! Ani jokes that she considers her little girl to be a ‘trick baby.’
“She’s really well behaved. We have a ‘trick’ baby, we say, because it makes all of our friends want to have babies. She’s pretty easy going.”
The 38-year-old singer/songwriter credits Petah and partner Mike Napolitano for helping her to create her latest album, Red Letter Year. “This record sounds better because I took a little time with it,” shared Ani during a recent interview. “I’ve got my baby and her daddy to thank for that.” Ani also credits seeing herself in Petah with helping her write the song Present/Infant.
“It’s about laying eyes on my daughter for the first time and going, ‘Oh no, she looks like me!’ And then going, ‘Oooh, that’s a f-cked-up thing to think.’ And going from there into having to address wholeheartedly my self-loathing before I teach it to her.”

I remember checking into a hotel for the first time with our firstborn in Chicago when he was three months old. We had him in his car seat on the ground next to us when the guy behind the counter looked at his computer screen and said, “And I see here you have a baby.” We said, “Yes, he’s down here.” And he said, “Oh, he’s one of those trick babies.” We didn’t follow so he explained, “One who behaves well and tricks you into having another.” I totally understand what Ani is saying!
