Carnie Wilson Expecting Second Daughter, to be Named Luciana

It’ll be another girl for Carnie Wilson and husband Rob Bonfiglio, the 40-year-old songstress shared Tuesday on The Bonnie Hunt Show. The couple have already settled on a name for baby-on-the-way, due in June. “It’s Luciana but we’ll call her Luci,” Carnie explained. “Isn’t that great?”
Sharing that she is craving cheese and bagels, Carnie — who lost 150 pounds with gastric bypass surgery in 1999, only to see her weight slowly creep upward again – is happy with where she’s at. “I am glad that I lost 50 lbs. before I got pregnant but honestly, I just push the big old pause button when I get pregnant,” she said.
“I love being 40 and pregnant. It rocks! I am Fertile Myrtle, you could say.”
Luci will join big sister Lola Sofia, 3 ½, at home.

I absolutely love the name Lucy (and Lola)!
But, I just don’t understand why parents give their children a longer name just to shorten it?

Why not just name her Lucy if that’s what she’ll be called?

I had gastric bypass surgery and if you don’t make the changes in your diet and exercise for the long hall, you will gain the weight back. Good for her for losing 50 pounds before getting pregnant. Luciana is my future daughter’s middle name.

The name luciana is beautiful, I love it. It goes well with lola too, but to calling her lucy takes the beauty away from such a pretty exotic type name like luciana in my opinion. She is only 5 months wow, I thought she was about 7 months already. I figured she would have another daughter.

Lis–I have an Abigail..but we call her Abbey. Mostly because it is more of a little “girl” name. My husband wanted to put Abbey on the birth certificate…but I wanted her to also have a “grown up” name. If that makes any sense. Our next..if we have a girl will be Elizabeth..but we will call her Lizzy…or Libby(can’t decide).

I have a question about the Fertile Myrtle comment. Do you guys in the States pronounce fertile as ‘fertall’ or Myrtle as ‘Myrtile’? I was trying to get how the rhyme went and I guessed that the fertile pronounciation would be different, but I’m not sure. Thanks to anyone who can answer this!

Yes, the fertile is pronounced different.
We have 2 daughters: Sophia and Lilia. We were adamant that Sophia was not to be shortened to Sophie– lasted all of about 2 minutes with our family. When introducing her now (she is 7), I let her pick what she wants to be called. She flip-flops between Sophie and Sophia, depending on her mood. With Lilia, we call her Lily. She was always going to be Lily, but we decided that we wanted to give her a “formal” name to use when she grew up. It is still her name, no matter if we call her by a nickname or not.

Something about her fertile myrtle comment bothers me….just hits a nerve. This whole time of her TTC has been hard for me to feel compassion. Don’t get me wrong I am very happy for the life of a new baby. Granted the times have definitely shifted but is getting pregnant at 40 not a big deal for anyone? The more risks associated with a later in life pregnancy are important to view but it seems in hollywood; have a baby whenever you want. I have to wonder if they couldn’t conceive if they would have adopted. Oh I digress. I have a cousin named Luciana and is called Lucy (never understood it either).

I love the name Luciana.. so pretty! Too bad they’re gonna shorten it.. I’m not a big fan of nicknames. But to each his own! My cousins name is Andrea & they call her Annie. Not that Annie is bad, but such a waste of a beautiful name like Andrea.

I don’t mind the shortening of a name. I just try to keep in mind that shortening is easier to do than lengthening. I would let my child choose what they wanted to be called with their name, or if I liked a nn, start it off with that. My parents named me Jessica and I almost always go by Jess. But if I had been named Jess, I would hate having to correct people when they asked if my name was actually Jessica, in long. Just my opinion though, and I can definitely see where others are coming from.
BTW, I love both Luciana and Lucy

I’m really surprised at all the negative comments about a nickname for a child.
I guess I may be different, but just about everyone in my family has a nickname. We still use our full, legal names (most of us), but I think nicknames are sweet and endearing.
How is naming a child Luciana and calling her Lucy any different than naming a child Anthony and calling him Tony? When the child grows up and they want something more professional, they can use their full name, if not, they can continue using the nickname.
At least Carnie and her husband are giving their child a normal name, unlike Bronx Mowgli, Zuma Nesta Rock, Peanut, etc., etc.
Whenever I hear one of the latest narcissistic celebrity baby names, I can’t help but think of one of my favorite episodes of SEINFELD wherein George tells Jerry he has always wanted to name his child Seven because HE idolized Mickey Mantle who wore #7:

Did you guys see her on Oprah? She looked fantastic.. My jaw dropped. I thought she didn’t lose the 50 pounds. Kudos to her.

My name is Cathy. Not Katherine, not Kathleen, just Cathy.
You would be surprised at the # of people who, upon asking my “full” name, tell me that my name can’t possibly be “Just Cathy”. There is an individual at work who insists on calling me Katrina
because it just “sounds better”!
No matter what, full name or nickname – You just can’t win!

Lola and Lucy. How cute! I think it’s more fun to have an official long name and a shorter, cuter nickname. Maybe it’s because so many of my hundreds of relatives are named like that. (Apparently, Filipinos are big on nicknames.) My parents are named Rodolfo and Luciana but are always referred to as Rudy and Lucy. Or, you know, Dad and Mom, lol.
Both names, Lucy and Luciana are such pretty names (okay, maybe I’m a little biased), so why not let her daughter have both? We always knew when a telemarketer was calling and not a friend because a friend would know which name to use!

I think people put too much drama into picking a name. Any name can be made fun of. Any name can be hated once the kid grows up. Just pick something you like and won’t mind saying a trillion times then be happy you are blessed with a child to name.

If she named the baby Lucy some people would complain it didn’t sound like a full name. She gave the baby a full name & people complain she’s going to call her a nickname. You can’t win!
I’m a Jessica, but I’ve never been called Jessica in my life, besides at the doctors office when I’m called back. I actually went to school with a Jessie & she was always annoyed that everyone assumed her name was Jessica…it wasn’t, just Jessie. My FIL is named Danny. Not Daniel, just Danny. I remember when DH & I went to get our marriage license the lady was very bothered by that & even flat out asked DH if he was sure of his fathers name & asked several times if we wanted to come back later or step outside & call his parents to make sure his real name was Danny. Being called a shorter name is really no big deal to me & I doubt Lucy will have that many problems with it in life. If she just named her Lucy, I’m guessing she’d get alot of people asking for her “real” name.

I have to say.. nicknames just happen people. I don’t know too many kids with long names that don’t get shortened. We have a Lucia (loo-sha) and everyone calls her Luci. Why not have the best of both worlds?

Why is everybody picking apart her baby’s name? At least it’s NORMAL! It’d be a lot worse if she called it Bagel!
If I had a girl, I’d name her Madeleine but call her Maddie. I think it’s nice to have a nickname for when you’re a baby to a teeanger, so that when you’re an adult, you can go by your formal name if you wish!

I guess no matter what people name their children other people are going to talk.
Adam Sandler and his wife named their daughter Sonny and people (including his family) said that that’s a nickname she should have a ‘proper’ name and still be called Sonny.
My name is Samantha and my parents hardly ever call me that, it’s always been Sammy. My Grandparents said I should have a ‘proper’ name. Only they ever called me Samantha.
Both Luciana and Lucy are beautiful names.

I don’t see anything wrong with nicknames. My name is Stephany but, of course, many people call me Steph (And when I’m called Stephany by my mother, I KNOW I did something wrong!) I have a cousin named Madison Grace whom we call Madi-Grace.
Anyway, Lucy is on my top names for babies. Haha. So I, for one, LOVE the name! And I love Luciana, too. Very cute.

Luciana is my daughter’s name! And, we call her Lucy for short! (She is 2 years old) I’m guessing ‘Lucy’ is going to be a lot more common in the years to come!

I love the name Luciana! They work so well together, Lola & Lucy.
I like that Carnie and Rob are calling her Luciana and shortening it, because later in life she may want to go by Luciana, especially if she has a career in business or something like that.

Dana, I just had to comment on your post because I LOVE the name Sophia; if I have a daughter I am determined that that will be her name.
I think Luciana is also a beautiful name and I don’t think that there’s really anything wrong with calling her Lucy (although in my opinion it’s not as pretty as her full name), except that if she spends the first several years of her life, into teenage years or adulthood being Lucy, that will be what people know her as and if she decides to go to her more adult name, she might have trouble making it stick. I knew a girl named Cassandra, called Cassie all her life, and when she was about 20 she decided she wanted to go by Cassandra, but everyone already knew her as Cassie, and she hated it.

All this name shortening stuff reminds me of a funny story.
I grew up in a house where everyone was called by their full first name never nicknames or anything.When my brother Christopher started kindergarten, it was the first time in his life that anyone had ever called him “Chris”.He was so fascinated with it,and he used it everywhere.That is until he decided to call a girl in his class “fatty”. The teacher,not to mention the parents and the little girl were in an uproar demanding he be suspended.That is until we all got the explanation “See, my name is Christopher but everyone calls me Chris, her name is Fatima,so I call her Fati”.

It’s weird she calls herself fertile myrtle, for years since lola was a baby I would hear her say in interviews she wanted a 2nd child. She co-hosted on the view over 2yrs ago and was saying she was having as much sex as possible to try to get pregnant. She always gave the impression she was having a hard time getting pregnant.

At 40 yrs, yes you are fertile to get pregnant. I have 3 kids, aged, 22yrs.,17yrs.,and 3 years old. I had my last child at 40 yrs. old, and I refer myself to a fertile myrtle as well. We were told that we could have no more children, then… shabam!,..I was pregnant at 40! I’m also a Grandmother. ha! 40 is not too old to have a child. Our time on earth is not promised to us, whether we are 20yrs.old or 40yrs. when we concieve. I make an attempt to always be the healthiest I can be. I have gotten a few rude comments from others about why anyone would have a child at 40. How silly!!!! What a blessing it is!!!!
