Erykah Badu and Jay Electronica Welcome Mars Merkaba

Update: In a new update via Twitter, it seems that the couple have reportedly named their daughter Mars Merkaba. Erykah adds, “Her eyes are looking right into mine. she struggles to focus. I wonder where she just came from. I mean…her spirit…”
Originally posted February 1st: Singer/songwriter Erykah Badu and her boyfriend Jay Electronica have welcomed their first child together! The couple’s baby girl was born today, February 1st, at “1:30 p.m. exactly,” according to the proud papa who, along with Erykah, provided updates throughout the day via Twitter. Sharing that their daughter had arrived, Jay writes,
“It’s the happiest day of my life.”
While no other details — including a name — have been released, per Jay’s updates, Erykah, 37, delivered her third child naturally. “My daughter is ready. Labor has begun. Everybody stand back. No hospitals. No doctors. No medicine. We’re waiting on midwife to show up,” revealed the excited dad earlier today. From the sound of things, Jay, along with Erykah’s 4 ½-year-old daughter Puma Rose had things under control! “I’m doing foot squeezes and foot rubs when the contractions hit. Puma is rubbing her hands.”
A few hours after the delivery, Erylah tweeted, “I can’t believe it’s over. Home birth, no painkillers, about five hours, she was a little past due date, but I didn’t mind waiting. Breath.”
The new baby joins Puma, Erykah’s daughter with rapper D.O.C and Seven Sirius, 11, Erykah’s son with Outkast’s Andre ‘Andre 3000′ Benjamin. The pregnancy was revealed at the Austin City Limits festival in September when Erykah took the stage in a smiley-face tee and showed off a growing belly.

Congrats to them but I hope the name is not what it’s rumored to be…it’s a terrible name. Let’s just hope it’s not the case.

Congrats to them and so brave going all natural. I considered it, but opted for the hospital each time. However if (IF) we decide to have another I will never do the hospital again. Anyway, what I wonder is how do they know it’s a girl if they are so anti-doctors, medicine, etc.? Maybe just a feeling? Congrats on the baby. I’m sure she’ll be pretty and talented like mama.

melenia- There’s nothing in this post to suggest that they knew the gender of the baby beforehand.

AWWw…yeah I was followed the play by play of her child’s birth on twitter! How exciting! And she had her all natural, no pain killers, at home….What a blessing! Congratulations you two!

Ooh, Mars. That’s an interesting name to add to my blog.

Welcome Little Miss Mars! I know what a merkabah is, & mama badu never disappoints with the names she chooses for her babies. sirius 7, merkaba… you are on the higher path, erykah.

It’s not my favorite name, but it’s better than the name I was talking about before (Twitty Milk) which could create awful nicknames and such. I don’t love the name, but I think it fits in well with her other kids’ names. Obviously she likes different names and there is nothing wrong with that.

I thought he said “my daughter is ready, labor has begun” which I took to mean that they knew the gender. I just took that to mean that they had some hospital visits/testing. It doesn’t matter, of course, it’s their birth. Anyway, congrats.

I love the name Mars…my friend Mari used to go by Mars. Congratulations again!

Mars, as in a Mars bar. Hmm interesting. But it was to be expected that Erykah’s baby would have an interesting name, after Seven and Puma. As long as they like it, that’s all that matters

Here across the pond, Mars is a chocolate brand.

February 4th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
oooookaaaay……
February 4th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Mars is the Roman god of war. Kind of a violent name. But, better then Twitty!
February 5th, 2009 at 12:49 am
Kelpy- Mars used to be the name of a chocolate bar here in the U.S. as well. That chocolate bar is now known as Snickers Almond, though.

So she is called Mars and Merkaba?
Mars – Powerful star of war and power
Merkaba – symbol of love and unity
I guess that kind of balance it.
Congratulations.
