How I Met Your Mother star Alyson Hannigan and her husband, actor Alexis Denisof, welcomed a daughter, Satyana Denisof, on Tuesday, March 24th in Los Angeles, her rep tells PEOPLE. Funnily enough, the 24th is also Alyson’s birthday!

Though no further details were released, Alyson’s rep tells PEOPLE, “They’re very excited, and mom and baby are doing great.”

Alyson, 35, who first announced she was expecting in October, craved ginger ale during her pregnancy and revealed she felt absent-minded. “I have pregnancy brain, which I never realized was a thing but it is,” she said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “I sort of feel like a Koala bear where I’m slightly stoned all the time and say the wrong word.” The couple kept the sex of their baby a secret during pregnancy, even making some CBB readers believe they were expecting a boy!

This is the first child for Alyson and Alexis, 43, who met on the set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer during the 1999-2000 season and were married near Palm Springs, Calif., in 2003.

  24. mel Says:

Congrats Aly & Alexis!! So happy for the both of them. Loving the name Satyana also! :)

…..The name satyana comes from two sanskrit roots: sat, which means truth or being, and also refers to action aligned or suffused with spirit; and yana, which means vehicle. So “satyana” means a vehicle for action infused with the grace of spirit.

  25. Jane Says:

Unusual name. Not sure how to pronounce it. I love this couple so much from their days on BTVS. Congrats Alexis and Alyson! =)

  26. J Says:

Looks like a weird name when you first see it but when it’s pronounced it sounds very nice. I thought she was much younger than 35.

  27. Alexis Says:

Oh my Gosh – finally the baby is here! CONGRATULATIONS!! I’m embarrassingly happy for this lovely couple. The name is so sweet, and I’m thrilled to find out it really is a baby girl. I do so hope we can see a picture soon! It’s so great Alyson and Alexis were able to keep this news private for a week. I bet they’ve treasured this time.

Does Satyana have a middle name, or is Satyana Denisof her full name?

  28. Caroline Says:

    Lovely name ! I wonder if she had a c-section … Congratulations !!

  29. stephanie Says:

Ha, I totally thought it was going to a boy because of Alexis’s supposed slip, they sure fooled me :D
I’m Indonesian and I went to junior high with a boy Satya. Stayana sounds pretty, I misread it as Svetlana at first.

  30. chrissi Says:

yay congratulations to Alyson and Alexis. I was sure she was having a boy. But loving the name. Its so different

  31. Bek Says:

Congratulations to Alyson and Alexis! Such a beautiful name, and original too. And not in that weird-o name way most celebs choose for their babies. I hope she ends up with her Dad’s eyes – big baby blues.

  32. Carin Says:

I actually gasped when I read this, I was so excited. Figured there was still a few more days. Such a fan of both Aly and Alexis, and I bet the baby is adorable.

  34. Bianca Says:

Congratulations to Alyson and Alexis and all the best for them and their little bundle of joy. Wonderful name, sounds a bit like “Tatyana”, which is Russian I think. I was expecting to hear the great news any day now, since we haven’t seen pictures of her out and about for some days.

  35. Kelpy Says:

Congrats on the new parents on their birth of their baby girl!!! :)

I’m clueless to the name, never heard it before. It’s not my style anyway but does anyone know how it is pronounced?
    sat-ya-ner? sat-ti-yana?

  36. Blackrose Says:

Congrats!! sry but i have to say this.. Satyana means bra in my language!!hehe anyways i bet shes beautiful..

  37. Kristen Says:

What an awesome birthday gift. Congrats to them.

  38. Jazz Says:

Congrats to Alexis and Alyson on their baby girl! I kinda dig the name. It’s different but not outrageous.

  39. kendrajoi Says:

OMG, Alyson and her hubby are GOOD- I really thought it would be a boy. Congrats on a baby girl! That is so cool mom and daughter share a birthday!

  40. morgyn Says:

For some reason i thought she was seen out in the last week. oh well.

and the article is so right! i totally had her having a boy, hands down.

Congratulations to Alyson and Alexis! I’m a bit weary of the name myself as well, but Zuma grew on me!

  41. Freya Says:

Congratulations to Alyson (possibly one of the prettiest pregnant woman ever) and Alexis!

Don’t really like the name but I’m sure she is absolutely beautiful. What a great birthday present!

  45. Monique Says:

Wondered why I hadn’t seen anymore pics of her. Pregnancy really agreed with her. My congratulations to both Alexis and Alyson. Many blessings to them and their new little one!

  46. Lacey Says:

I totally called it!! I said a girl in late March. Congraulations! I’ve been waiting for this birth announcement.I’m not to keen on the name, but as long as it suits them.

  47. babyboopie Says:

Aw congratulations on Alyson and Alexis on the birth of Satyana! How do you pronounce it?

  48. Alex Says:

I’m not keen on the name but each to their own, congratulations to the couple! I went to school with someone who had two children on her birthday, three years apart. It’s so odd when that happens, but uber cool as well!

  49. sil Says:

    congratulations!
I knew she was girl ;) I like the name…but I’m not sure how to pronounce it?

  50. Lis Says:

    I still don’t get how it’s pronounced?????????

Nonetheless I’m not a fan. Seems like quite a tounge-twister. I’m just not too keen on names that you have no idea how to pronouce when you read it.

  51. bungalowbliss Says:

I was convinced it was a boy, too!

Congrats to Alyson and Alexis–the name is beautiful! Love the meaning and uniqueness of it, too.

  52. Holly Says:

    It’s pronounced: Sat-yah-na

  53. baby carriers backpacks Says:

I had no idea she was pregnant. Congrats!

  54. Kayelle Says:

The name looks like Satan. Why can’t people give children names that at least other people will be able to pronounce?

  55. mazie beth Says:

now that is a great present for her birthday. brava and congrats to Alyson and Alexis on their daughter. where unusual names are common in my family (mine is short for Amazine) the name Satyana is quite beautiful. congrats again.

  56. Harley Says:

Holy macrel! I clicked on CBB and was just thinking about her as the page loaded lol! That is so exciting! Congrats to the whole family :) I wasn’t a fan of the name at first glance but I think it’s beautiful, I wouldn’t necessarily use it but hey, it works well for them :) YAY!!!!!

  57. Sara Says:

I knew it was a baby girl =)
I’m so happy for them! More Buffy babies to the fold.
I like the name, it goes well with the last name.
I hope she has red hair like her mom.

  58. mel Says:

Lis, I believe it’s pronounced sah-tee-ah-nuh (sorry, not the best at spelling out sounds, but I hope that helps a little).

By the sound of the name and the spelling and based on what a few others have posted, it is most likely a Sanskrit name. I kind of get the impression by many (on multiple birth announcements, not just this one) that if the name isn’t common in American culture (or whatever your home country may be) people think the name is either made up or ‘too out there’. This world is made up of hundreds of countries and tens of thousands of names, just because someone you know hasn’t named their child Satyana or Nakoa doesn’t mean it’s a made up or ‘unusual’ name with no origin of meaning. Although I do agree, some names are best suited for objects and not people (Apple, Pilot etc.). Not everyone has to like every name and I think it’s perfectly fine to vocalize one’s own opinion but just because you can’t pronounce it doesn’t mean it’s not a real name.

  59. stephanie Says:

It’s really not that hard, if they pronounce it like Indonesians do (Indonesian language is based on Sanskrit) it’s pronounced Sah-tyah-nah, like Tatyana. Alexis is of Russian descent, maybe they just want a variation of that. How funny would it be if the S turned out to be a typo? Haha ;)

  60. stephanie Says:

    Kayelle-

Gwen Stefani helpfully named her son Zuma and people still complained :D

  61. sunny Says:

I hope that when she’s in school the kids don’t call her Satan.

  62. Stephany Says:

Congrats to Alyson and Alexis! I actually really, really like the name. It’s much prettier when said out loud, very feminine.

  63. Susan Says:

Super weird name. But if that makes them happy, and if the child is healthy – well that is all that matters.

  64. alice jane Says:

Ahhh, I was so excited when I saw this! I love both Alyson and Alexis from their Buffy days, so a little Buffy baby just makes me happy. And while the name is not really my style, I do think it’s really pretty. Unusual, but not crazy by any means. And I really think people need to stop assuming the worst with what “nicknames” she’ll have or how no one will be able to pronounce it, etc. It’s really not that strange a name.

Anyway, many congrats to Alyson and Alexis!!

  65. Jae Says:

Aww.. a baby girl! so precious!!!
Interesting name. Pretty.. I think!? :)

  66. Sam Says:

I KNEW IT WAS A GIRL!!!! Her belly looked just like mine when I was pregnant with my daughter. I am so happy for them and I can’t wait to see a picture of that beautiful little GIRL!!!! How awesome to have her baby born on her birthday!! I had a feeling that she had given birth because for the last week, I haven’t seen any pics of them. It must be all that Jamba Juice she’s been drinking lately….trying to jump start her labor. I guess it worked!!

  67. Terry Says:

Aww….CONGRATS!!! I also had my first daughter on my birthday too:) Best present EVER!!! LOVE her name, very different!!!

  68. Elle Says:

Not a fan of the name, but congrats! I like Saty or ana but not both.

  69. Aelys Says:

I’m very surprised at some people’s reactions to the baby’s name, how they can’t pronounce it (can pronounce Atiana de la Hoya’s name? Then you got it, just add an S!) and it’s not a name. Hello! It’s a very normal name compared to the Peanuts or Zumas, and very pronounceable compared to Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha (now if THAT ain’t an unpronounceable mouthful!), yet I see people saying it’s unpronouceable and how “it sounds too much like / I hope they won’t call her Satan [in school]“!! Wow! Aren’t you people negative!

  70. Shelby Says:

Congrats to this couple! I actually pretty sad we won’t be seeing her adorable pregnancy fashion anymore but am so excited for the birth of their daughter! I was most surprised at her birthdate and how they’ve managed to keep a secret for a week and enjoy this time with her. I like the name and I wouldn’t be surprised if Saty was used as a nickname as well. Congrats again~

  71. gigi Says:

how has this been kept secret for a week??!!! i feel like we’ve seen pics of her beautiful belly on a daily basis!
that lil princess is going to be stunning! congrats!

  72. Emma Leigh Says:

I’d be interested to hear how they came by deciding on the name.

They’re both cute so that kid should be really adorable.

  73. CC Says:

I’m so happy for the new family… i’ve been waiting for this news for the last couple of weeks… I had a feeling she was going to have the baby soon, and a little girl too!!! I for one love the name, nice and old fashion…

  74. Brooke Says:

That child will be called Satan by the kids her entire life. Count on it.

  75. Tiger Lily Says:

Not sure if they are going for the Sanskrit pronunciation but if they are it would be Sath-yah-na. The letter “T” is pronounced as a “th” sound in most Indian languages.

  76. Erica Says:

Hmmm…it’s growing on me. I think it’s actually a beautiful name, but I never would’ve thought they would choose something so exotic. I was expecting an Ava or an Aiden, but Satyana is better than both!

  77. alice jane Says:

Brooke, they will if you keep talking about it and putting the idea out there. The thought never occured to me until people here started saying it. I think Satyana is a beautiful name.

  78. MaddMoo Says:

It can be pronounced in a number of way’s. I agree they went with the Russian version as Alexis is from Russian descent so it’s either Say-ahh-na (silent T) or Sah-tiana, the spelling does look a little bland but it’s cute when you say it. I guess she’ll tell us what when and why she chose it in her own time. Can’t wait to see what the little girl looks like. Wonder if she has her mom’s natural red hair?

  79. Tracy Says:

How did they keep this a secret for a whole week??

  80. Ella Says:

For the longest time I thought she was going to have a girl and then towards the end of her pregnancy, I changed my mind and believed it to be a boy.
I like the name Satyana it flows so well with Denisif!

  81. Katie Says:

I really thought it was a boy- I’m always wrong!! Congratulations Alyson and Alexis!! I love your work and you seem like you’ll be an amazing mother. Sleep when she sleeps- that’s my only advice…everything else is up for grabs. :-)

  82. Brooklyn Says:

Wow. That was a week ago. I can’t believe that no one knew until today. Congratulations to them. I was right in them having a girl. I’m undecided on the name. But I think I like it…

  83. Bubbles Says:

I can´t wait to see a picture of Satyana. All the best wishes!!!

  84. J Says:

Kayelle, I never once thought the name looked or sounded like Satan when reading the article or comments about the name Satyana until people brought it up. I have to disagree on the naming thing, I don’t think parents should have to think of others when naming their new baby. If yuo can’t pronounce it than slow down and take the time to. I’d be a little annoyed if someone came to see my new baby, barely listened to the name or read the name card quickly and then says suddenly, “Hey the name is almost like Satan! Not to be mean, because I have a point to it, but I think of a gazelle when I read your name, do you get that a lot? Perhaps we should go back in time and ask your parents to find a name that’s less like an African savannah creature, something where people will know the meaning and promunciation right off the bat.

  85. Cindy Says:

too close to satan for me!

  86. Emilie Says:

Gorgeous news, and a very beautiful name indeed!
    Congratulations from France! :-)

  87. Sam & Freya's Mum Says:

I didn’t think of Satan at first either, although hopefully she doesn’t get it shortened to that, the way kids can be sometimes?! had read somewhere about her hubby’s Russian decent too, and when I saw the headline just figured maybe it was honouring that, some russian version but not familiar with the name, depending on how it’s pronounced of course, if they had that in mind? Must say in some ways (just personal choice!) that I prefer it to Seraphina!! – less long-winded IMHO. Wasn’t keen on Seraphina as a name at all after liking Violet, as a fan of shorter names myself (although I know it’s subjective and all, its not for everyone) – as a mum of a Sam & Freya, keener on shorter names (not short for Samuel, which I initially preferred as didn’t mind it at first, now used to Sam, suits our cheeky 4 year old!). My hubby didn’t like it in full, he’s even Sam on birth certificate, and now can’t imagine our son as a Samuel or friends/family can’t imagine it on him either, sounds a bit almost posh/serious for him, no offence to Samuels or parents of a Samuel out there – although must admit I do like Naomi Watts’ Samuel Kai, sounds nice the two names flowing together I think – although here in NZ Kai is Maori for food, so makes me think of that. Congrats to Alyson & Alexis on the safe arrival of their little girl (as a mum of a bub, Sam, who arrived over 6 weeks early due to my preeclampsia, and weighed under 4 pds, scary, then had a miscarriage before our little girl arrived 14 mths ago, it puts it in perspective, the name/gender etc, but like everyone else, is also fun to hear the names as a bonus if you like, a side issue, in order after the health of bub! Think it’s kind of unusual and wouldn’t be what I’d pick either, but their baby and obviously like it, bet she’s a cutie!

  88. April Says:

I agree it instantly made me think of Satan…not a resemblance I would want :) ….Man alive, it is sure something how people voicing their OPINIONS gets people so riled up and hateful….opinions are not always going to be the same and it’s crazy that a different opinion could cause such outrage…The world would be a boring place if everyone always thought the same thing now wouldn’t it. Jeesh…

  89. Jamie Says:

I knew she’d have a girl! What a gorgeous name. I had never heard of it before today. Congrats to Alyson & Alexis!

  90. brooklyn! Says:

SATAN???????????? Really people???? It is a beautiful name…honestly, does this world really need more Susans, Jennifers, micheles, etc.????

  91. MammaDucky Says:

Seriously? Some of you had initial thoughts of the name being close to satan? I’m sorry, but that’s a stretch. I agree, that if you took the time to actually LOOK at the name and sound it out, it’s a beautiful name with a beautiful meaning.
Kayelle, in which language would you like the world’s parents to name their children so that YOU will be able to properly pronounce it?
I do not think children will call her satan, unless of course ignorant parents plant that idea in their children’s heads.

  92. Samamtha Says:

Gigi and tracy, I too was shocked its been a week…im sitting here thinking I for sure saw pics posted on here of the couple in the past few days, guess its been over a week…goes to show how fast time goes by

  93. asm Says:

You people are crazy. The name is beautiful. I guess it’s fine to put out your opinion, but how do you think the new parents would feel if they knew a bunch of ignorants were comparing their baby’s name to Satan?
And it’s stupid anyway, because Satyana is in no way close to Satan. It never even crossed my mind. And if that’s the first thing anyone thought when they saw the name then they should at least have the decency to keep it to themselves.

And of course congratulations to Aly and Alexis! I hope everything is going okay with mom and the new baby :) .

  94. Anais Says:

Great that they had a daughter! Although it’s absolutely horrible that Alexis’ ‘Angel’ costar died on the same day his daughter was born.

  95. mom of 3 boys Says:

I think it sounds like Tatiana, which I think is gorgeous. Satan didn’t come to my mind at all!

  96. ecl Says:

Interesting that all the first time celebrity moms due in April had their babies in March – I’m betting she was induced since most deliver a week late.

  97. Liv Says:

I think it is a beautiful name! The thought of satan didn’t even enter my mind. Congrats to them.

  98. SAR Says:

Wow, they sure fooled me into thinking it was a boy! Congrats to Alyson and Alexis. It’s always nice when a child has the same birthday as a parent.

  99. ab Says:

such a pretty name! very much like tatiana, which reminds me of queen titania, from a midsummer night’s dream.

  100. Alayna Says:

Anais, Andy Hallett – Lorne on Angel, died on March 29th, not on March 24th, which is the day that Satyana was born. Different days.

  101. Alexis Says:

Am I missing something? Satyana doesn’t sound anything like Satan. Satyana begins with a short “a” sound, as in “apple”, while Satan has a long “a”, as in “aviation”. Maybe it is just my accent, but honestly, I hear no resemblance at all. The kids would really have to be searching for a reason to pick on her if all they could come up with was Satan.

By the way, I went to a multicultural school, with plenty of what you might consider unusual names (at least in the context of the western world). We had an Arnav, a Zea, and guess what? Kids didn’t think anything at all of those names, because we had nothing to compare it to. A name is a name, it’s the person behind it that counts. Being old fashioned and turning up your nose at anything that sounds different is the domain of adults, I’m afraid (and kids learn from adults).

  102. Manon Says:

    Congratulations: beautiful name too!

  103. Jennifer Says:

Aww…what a special birthday present! Congratulations to Alyson and Alexis!

Satyana is an unusual name, but rather pretty. The more I say it, the more I’m liking it. I’m sure she’s a beauty! :-)

  104. J.J. Says:

Awwww congrats!!!!!!!!! I knew it was a girl!! Never heard of Satyana, but it’s really pretty! Congrats to Alexis, Alyson and the Hannigan-Denisof families!!

  105. Ellen Says:

I don’t like the name at all but compared to Zuma and Suri it’s practically along the lines of Elizabeth or Catherine.

I’m very happy for them both. They are always smiling and have an inner glow about them. I hope their family stay in tact for many mnay years to come. I don’t understand why the baby only has her fathers name and not her mothers though, seeing as Alyson has kept her surname.

  106. fergette Says:

I didn’t think of Satan but instead first read it as Santana which was pretty funny. Maybe she’ll grow up to play a mean guitar.

Congrats to them! I bet she’s a cutie.

  107. Gigi Says:

I love ethnic names and am happy they went for something from their heritage. I am surprised by how often posters hate names that are outside of the anglo norm. It’s not a silly name like Apple but a name probably more familiar in another country. Why is that so bad?

  108. itsybitsyknitsy Says:

    How cute. I love them!

  109. Sara Says:

Aah, what an awesome birthday present! Congratulations to Alyson and Alexis. I knew it was a girl – I’m finally right for once! Can’t wait to see pictures – I’m sure she is beautiful. I loved Alyson in the American Pie movies!

  110. Hayley_B Says:

Awwwww! Yay for baby Satyana! I think it’s pretty and unusual :) I’ll bet she’s absolutely gorgeous! Can’t wait to see her first pics!

  111. Annabel Says:

I don’t think the name SOUNDS like Satan, but when I saw it written out, the first thing that came to mind was that it had Satan in it (all you have to do is remove the ‘y’ and… voilà! There it is.) It’s a beautiful name with what I think is an unfortunate spelling.

But aside from that, I’d like to offer my congratulations to Alyson and Alexis! Part of me is a little bummed that we won’t be seeing any more pictures of Alyson’s cute pregnant self, but I’m excited that they now finally have their little girl! They’re sure to make a beautiful family.

  112. April Says:

I don’t think it sounds like Satan either ..my eyes just thought of that when I seen the spelling…the pronunciation is actually pretty and the name is not out there weird like Pilot Inspektor or Apple or Zuma…but each parent has a right to name their kid what they want but opinions will be given and thankfully opinions have the right to all be different :)

  113. taegan Says:

    YAY!!!

Congratulations to them. “Willow’s” am Mum :D …fantastic!

  114. Mary-Helen Says:

Congrats to them! It does sound Russian, and it’s a nice name.

  115. Mia Says:

It makes me think of the Russian name “Svetlana” meaning “light” so I was thinking it was pronounced similarly like “Saht-yana”

  116. Alexis Says:

Well if people shouldn’t name their daughters Satyana because its spelling is similar to Satan, I wonder what all the parents of boys called Devin were thinking? What about Damon?

  117. CelebBabyLover Says:

Ellen- Alyson might use Denisof in her personal life, and Hannigen as her stage name. A lot of actresses do that when they get married. Anyway, do you question why Harlow Madden has only Joel’s last name and not Nicole’s? Or why Nahla has only Gabriel’s last name and not Halle’s?

  118. Aya Says:

Wow.. some people can really be ignorant.. Guess I was the only one that was raised with the motto “If you don’t have anything good to say keep your trap (as my mum would say) shut”.

For shame ! Yes, I know its just your opinion, but on a baby’s birth announcement ??? Show some decency.

And the Satan thing ??? Really ? Are we not all adults ? Not only that, either way you pronounce it sounds nothing like Satan.

I think people need to wake up and realize that people are becoming more cultured and creative with names. I rejoice at that because it means no more making out cards for my nephew’s class labelling “Jenn T,Jenn M,Michael P,Michael V,”.

    That being said….

    Congrats to Alexis and Alyson.

Alyson, I love that you kept Satyana’s name like mummy’s with a “y” instead of an “i”.

The name sounds beautiful and elegant, like the name of a ballet dancer or a princess from fairy tales…

  119. stephanie Says:

    Aya-

Spot on! I think Jessica Alba said the same thing. Being one of Stephanie A, Stephanie B, Stephanie C, etc all the way from kindergarten through high school, I’ve come to love these names :D

  120. 415mama Says:

Yay! Congratulations to them!! The best birthday present one could ask for :)

  121. brandi Says:

    i agree with you aya!

  122. Odalisque Says:

The one thing throughout this entire pregnancy is that every time I saw a picture of them together (A&A) the love and joy they have for each other just sparkled and shone through, almost tangible. Alexis clearly adores his wife. Their little one will be blessed with so much love it will rub off on everyone else. Blessings little one for a long, healthy and happy life.

  123. Isa Says:

    Congrats!!
their daughter will be beautiful like her mother.(L)

  124. Julie Says:
