Liev Schreiber: No Better Place Than Australia to Raise Kids

The more time Liev Schreiber spends in partner Naomi Watts‘ native Australia, the more inclined he is to pack up their family of four and move down under! “I was able to get into a rhythm and I got a feel for the lifestyle and the quality of life there,” the 41-year-old actor tells the Courier Mail. “It’s just unbeatable, plus if you’re raising kids, I can’t imagine a better place.” Of course, the tabloids have every bit the presence in Australia as they do in New York, and Liev admits that nothing tempts his temper like the paparazzi. “I was fine until [21-month-old Alexander] ‘Sasha’ [Pete] came along and then I started to get aggro,” he says with a laugh. “As an actor, I think I’d never kind of reached the heights of fame that Naomi had, and so when she came into my life it was a real test on our relationship.”

“I didn’t like that she was bringing all that attention with her and I think I probably blamed her for it in the beginning. But after a while, I acclimated to it and then, of course, Sasha was born and I had to acclimate to it all over again.”

Noting that “some days are better than others,” Liev seems resigned to the notion of raising his sons in the public eye. “As long as people can make money doing it, they’re going to do it and you have to deal with it,” he adds. The couple will continue to do just that, as they criss-cross the globe with their two boys in tow!

“We’re like circus people, we like to travel. I was really proud of the fact that Sasha had been to 10 countries by the time he was only eight months old.”

In addition to Sasha, Liev and Naomi are parents to Samuel Kai, 4-months. Liev can next be seen in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, opening May 1st.

  3. Emily Says:

I might be biased. but i agree, australia is one of the greatest places around.Has a much greater vibe of zen

  4. ang Says:

lol im biased too.hope they enjoy their time here and not get problems like nicole kidman has.

  5. Elli Says:

Hmm, don’t really get it why he is proud of having traveled to so many countries within such a short time with his baby boy. Ever heard of how important a daily routine is for babies and children in general? I don’t think that flying through various time zones, changing climate zones and sleeping in different hotel rooms (even though they are 5+ stars…) does any good – my personal opinion and, as I have heard and read, the one of many pediatricians and child carers.

  6. Nat Says:

Yes it is a great country I lived there for 10 years. But yanno it’s going under with the best of them.

  7. Sam & Freya's Mum Says:

Elli, ITA!, they need the routine when young. I don’t live in OZ but their neighbouring country of New Zealand and agree about the quality of life/lifestyle downunder! Have been to OZ several times being a couple of hours by plane from here, and could also live there easily too. is a better quality of life I think. I lived in the UK a few years in mid 20’s and wouldn’t want to raise our kids over there personally, smog, crowded, getting kidson and off underground tube trains etc, stressful! Guess it’s diff if you’ve always lived there, don’t know any different, but after growing up in a little country of only 4 million I only noticed after a few years away how green the grass was, how blue the sky is, minus smog which you have in bigger cities/countries, no place like home as they say!

  8. Sam Says:

Elli, that’s exactly what I thought, too! I think it’s great to allow your kids to experience multiple cultures/countries if you’re able to, but when they are infants they really don’t remember that stuff.

  9. Gini Says:

Elli, I totally agree. We’ll see how much they are going to travel with 2 kids though. My days and nights are chaotic enough without my kids having a single stamp in their passports.
