Wanda Sykes Welcomes Twins Olivia and Lucas

It’s a boy and a girl for comedian Wanda Sykes and her wife Alex!
Alex delivered fraternal twins on Monday, April 27th, Wanda’s rep tells PEOPLE exclusively. Daughter Olivia Lou weighed in at 6 lbs., 7 oz and was 19″ long, while son Lucas Claude debuted at 7 lbs., 9 oz and 20″ long. “All are happy and healthy and at home,” the rep shares.
The New Adventures of Old Christine star, 45, and Alex were married on October 25th, 2008. The twins are the first children for the couple.

Wow! How wonderful. I was a bit confused when she mentioned her kids during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, I actually googled her to see if I’d missed a birth announcement. Congrats Wanda & Alex.

How exciting and one of each! I didn’t know she was a lesbian either, must have kept personal life quiet, not that her sexuality matters, was just a surprise. Congrats to the new mums,and I also like their names and prefer Lucas spelt with a ‘c’ not a ‘k’ too. Nice normal names. I have a friend who recently had an Olivia and older girl Kayla, pretty feminine names. Olivia’s nice classic name that doesn’t age and suits an older person too? – that’s how I feel anyhow…

Kate (#27), they should still be legally married because laws (including this one) generally cannot be retroactively applied. So, while gay couples can longer get married in CA, those who already did before the ban are still legally married.

Good news there! Very nice weight for twins. Sounds like they were carried to term or at least close to term to be at those weights.
I am glad she “came out” last fall (for Prop
as the more celebrities that do so, the less stigma, sterotypes, and hopefully opportunities for homophobia and discrimination.
I mean, think of all the people that didn’t know Wanda was a lesbian and said were big fans of her from Curb Your Enthusiasm and Old Christine, yadda, yadda.
Do they no longer like her because she is a lesbian, and “shock” married to another woman and now has kids with her? So yes, bring on the celebrity GLBT and the twins and triplets!

I remember reading an interview with Ms. Sykes in People. She said that she never wanted to be a mother. Wow this is a huge surprise! Also how awesome that she gets to be a mom without giving birth. I wish the couple all the best.

Congrats to Wanda and her wife! She was hilarious at the Correspondence Dinner. My husband and I had tears in our eyes! Beautiful names!
In response to whether or not they are still married, anyone who was married before Prop 8 was in effect, as of right now, is still legally married. The California Supreme Court is in the process of deciding whether or not it is going to uphold Prop 8 and if they do they are unsure if they are going annual the close to 20,000 marriages that were performed…so no, at this time Wanda doesn’t have to adopt her children. Just writing that sentence seems so wrong…the idea of having to adopt ones own children is so horrendous. Love is love and who are any of us to say that only certain people can get married. As my Dad would say, “if they want to be as miserable as the rest of us, why not?” My Dad always had a great sense of humour! He was obviously joking…if some don’t get that. Two consenting adults…that should be the law.

Amen, Devon! Every American deserves equal rights under the law, and that includes to right to choose who they want to marry, regardless of sex.
I am so glad for Wanda and her wife, to have brought 2 big healthy babies into the world. Wanda is an absolute riot, and I am so glad she has found so much happiness. I love the names they chose, they are so classic! Much congrats to the whole family!!!!

I don’t think it needed to be said that they are fraternal twins. Um, yeah, of course they are! Identical twins are always the same sex so it goes without saying that boy/girl twins are fraternal.

Every time I see Wanda in a movie, show, or comedy act, she has my sides busting. Hilarious, talented lady. I just watched Monster-In-Law and she was the funniest part of the movie in my opinion. When she said that she almost dislocated her you know what, I thought I was going to die. Congrats Wanda and Alex on your two new babies!

Seraphina- Actually, on extremely rare occasions, identical twins can be one boy and one girl. What happens is that a zygote (the techincal term for a newly fertilized egg) with the chromsome set XY splits, creating identical twin boys. However, shortly after the split, one of the twins somehow loses the Y chromosome, which means that twin developes into a girl (she will, however, have what’s called Turner Syndrome, which results when one of the sex chromosomes is absent).
However, that IS extremely rare, so it’s still pretty safe to assume when you see a pair of boy/girl twins that they’re fraternal.
