Brandon Flowers Welcomes Son Gunnar
Robert Pitts/Landov |
Is there room for one more son? Let’s hope so! The Killers’ frontman Brandon Flowers and wife Tana welcomed their second child on Tuesday, July 28th, a baby boy named Gunnar Flowers.
“Both baby and parents are healthy and happy,” Killers’ rep Jen Appel tells PEOPLE.
Speaking to the Kramp and Adler radio show shortly before taking the stage on Sunday at Lollapalooza in Chicago, the 28-year-old singer-songwriter confirmed the happy news. Brandon went on to note the difficulties presented by his distinctive last name.
“[Gunnar] is a tough name. I had to have something that combats against the Flowers.”
Baby boy joins big brother Ammon, 2, at home in Las Vegas. The pregnancy was announced in May.

Thats my best friends name. He’s currently going through the process of getting the spelling corrected, its usually spelled Gunnar. Gunner Flowers does not go together, at all. My friends last name is similar to Sargaard so it works(sounds very Norwegian).

Gunnar is a fine Scandinavian name. Gunner is an unfortunate variation on it. And Gunner Flowers is so mismatched, it’s kind of ridiculous.

I don’t mind it @ all. He knows what it’s like to grow up with his last name and it’s not something weird like Orange Crayon, so why not? Congrats to the Flowers family!

Gunnar was in the running with my cousin and her husband for their 4th (and last) son. They went with Grayson. I like the name Gunnar, though! Congrats to the family!!
August 11th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
I always think of the family dog in Cheaper by the Dozen when I hear that name
August 11th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
Oh, wanted to add, I don’t think it’s a dog’s name (or a bad name for that matter!), that’s just the name I associate it with!
August 11th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
Can’t help but think “Ammo” and “Gun” when I read his sons’ names. Perhaps this is on purpose?
August 11th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Here is the UK a Gunner is an Arsenal supporter
Congrats to them!
August 11th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
Seriously People???and just what name would you use for a son with the last name Flowers??? Give me a break Gunnar is a fine name.
August 11th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
haha, luckily I don’t think Brandon Flowers could care less about what any of us think! I like the name though! And I love The Killers!
August 11th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
I actually like the name, but I would’ve spelled it Gunnar.
August 11th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
My daughters godfathers name is Gunnar, and i agree with those who said that the name seems to lack a flow. You guys act like Flowers is this horrific name! Ammon Flowers seems just fine to me, but the ‘er’ witht he ‘fl’ its just a bit weird on the tongue for me.
August 11th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
Congrats to them. My brother-in-law and his girlfriend are currently expecting their first baby. When I asked what names they’re thinking of, he said, “What do you think of Gunner?” I (stupidly) replied, “It sounds like a dog’s name.” Doh! I honestly thought he was joking, but he was serious! Oops. I then told him that it’s a fine name, and it shouldn’t matter what anyone else thinks, as long as they like it. But yes, it does bring to mind the dog from Cheaper By the Dozen.

people cant choose their last names… i think its very cool and one-of-a-kind.
August 11th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
Hmm, it seems odd that he felt like he had to choose a “manly” name to counteract his last name. My last name is Flowers also and that has never even crossed my mind. However, I’ve always thought the name Gunner sounds kind of redneck. I just associate it with the “huntin’ and fishin’” crowd.
August 11th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
I love the name…but then I have a son named Gunnar
August 11th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
congrats to him. hope everyone is happy and healthy. however i hate the name… it’s absolutely his choice and i’m not saying he should have named him anything different as it is entirely his choice obviously (and the mum’s) but that’s just my opinion. why you would want your child associated with something like guns, and it will be, especially with such a lovely last name as Flowers is beyond me. i’m am categorically a pacifist and wouldn’t dream of making that association with my kids and guns.
just my opinion!
August 11th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
Ha, that’s interesting, Angela, about the two nickname possibilities. And, Sadie, I think you’re right about him not caring what any of us think, anyway.
The Killers are the best ever!
August 11th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
I like Gunnar, but not Gunner. It reminds me too much of guns.
August 11th, 2009 at 11:18 pm
There seem to be a lot of comments about the way it’s spelt. I’ve listened to the interview when Brandon says the name and it sounds like “Gunner,” but he could have been saying “Gunnar” just as easily, it sounds the same. If the quote above is all the rep said, do we know for sure it’s spelt Gunner and not Gunnar?

When we confirmed the birth with the rep, she gave the spelling as “Gunner.”

I just want to comment that every time I see this guy I think its Joey Lawrence with a weird mustache – ha!
August 11th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
Well the same isn’t english in his defense assuming he just changed the spelling on the old nordic name.
I won’t lie, my childs godfather was born and raised in the backcountry of north carolina and on top of his thick accent the name when I met him did seem kind of hickish to me. Now that I know his roots(his grandparents were from Norway and Iceland) I feel badly about my assumption. But I was 16 at the time! Oh and he’s not a hick or redneck at all!
August 12th, 2009 at 1:16 am
For all we know it might be spelled Gunnar- he only mentioned the name on a radio interview so far so no official spelling yet. I like it. Flowers IS a lovely last name, but as someone mentioned before I’m sure Brandon knows most what it feels like to be a guy with that last name. There have been plenty of articles about the band ridiculing his name, and high school and middle school must be a hell of a lot worse.
August 12th, 2009 at 1:32 am
Maybe it’s a little play on words. Like Gunner and Ammon, children of The Killers’ vocalist or something? Congrats to Brandon, it feels like yesterday that I read his first son was born.
August 12th, 2009 at 5:17 am
Congrats to them! Love the Killers. When I heard the name I automatically thought of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the former Manchester United striker.
August 12th, 2009 at 6:57 am
Congrats to Brandon and Tana
lol luv the name but if u shortern both their sons name you get “Ammo” and “Gun” LOL hehe i do really love the name tho
i don’t think Gunner Flowers sounds ridiculous at all, how can Gunner sound ridiculous and Gunnar be “a fine name”? their practically the same but slightly diferent pronounciation at the end :S
i told a friend his name wen i heard and she started singin shoot the gunner lol
August 12th, 2009 at 7:50 am
Gunnar is a Scandinavian name – and it’s a name I associate with men in their 80s. I’m not really a fan of the name, but it does sound better when you pronounce it in English.
But I can see the fun in ‘Gun’ and ‘Ammo’ even though, it is politically incorrect!
August 12th, 2009 at 7:52 am
Congrats, to them this is so funny he is in a band called The Killers and he names his son Gunner. Creepy lol.
August 12th, 2009 at 8:39 am
Congratulations to Brandon and Tana on the birth of their second son. I love Brandon and his band and I get a huge amount of pleasure from listening to their music and videos of concerts played.
August 12th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Congratulations to them! I don’t know who they are, but it is always exciting to have a baby!
August 12th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
He said he really likes it over in England, maybe he is a secret Arsenal fan?
August 13th, 2009 at 12:34 am
Ammon and Gunnar are kind of cool names, although I can imagine the playground nicknames of Amy and Gun! I can see how it would be difficult to get a good pair up with a last name like Flowers.
August 13th, 2009 at 10:54 am
I’m not really keen on the name Gunner since it kinda sounds like a pet’s name with one of those spiked collars lol. But I think it goes great with Ammon. Has anyone noticed that a lot of celebrities that have one boy are expecting or had another boy? Like this family, Naomi Watts, Nicole Sullivan, Gwen Stefani, Melissa Joan Hart, Patrick Wilson, Tom Colicchio, Ashly Costa, Cat Cora. The list can go on!
August 13th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
I think people miss the most important thing here is that both parents and child are well and healthy – nuff said
- come on girls and boys everybody make some noise.
August 13th, 2009 at 6:46 pm
Gunner do this, gunner do that!!
August 14th, 2009 at 9:14 am
Just be thankful this is not the child of rock star Chris Rea with a name like Gunner as would end up called Gunner Rea. – nice
August 16th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Gunner Flowers, I love it!
December 30th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
