Josie Bissett’s Recipe for Family Bonding

Dinner is a family affair each and every night for Josie Bissett and her two children Mason Tru, 10, and Maya Rose, 7, the 38-year-old actress tells Cookie magazine. “We love cooking a meal and sitting down to eat it together,” Josie explains. “I enjoy getting their input on ingredients and hearing their ideas about what might taste good.”

Singling out having not taken a “yearlong cooking course all over the world” as her only regret about pre-baby life, Josie is focused now on integrating that love of culinary arts into family life. “It’s so important to engage your kids to create rituals and moments that they will always remember,” she adds.

Weekends for the trio are carefree. “I love not having to get the kids up early for school,” she explains.

“We all wake up at our leisure; the kids know not to wake me up. Then we make breakfast or go out to eat with family. There is usually a sporting event or two to watch!”

The days of toting two crying infants around are clearly long gone, and from the sound of things Josie would say good riddance! The Melrose Place and The Secret Life of an American Teenager star singles out that scenario as her most frazzled mom moment. “They always sounded like they were crying to death when they were that small…and the car seats are turned the other way,” she notes.

“Ugh! I was always frantic to find the pacifier or stretching into awkward positions to get my pinky finger into their little mouths to suck on so they would stop crying.”

Mason and Maya are Josie’s children with ex-husband Rob Estes. Melrose Place premieres September 8th at 9 p.m. on the CW.

I was trying to back myself up. You’re right. How embarrassing.

  2. Bren Says:

I love her, she seems like a sweet mom.

  3. Hea Says:

I had no idea they split up.

  4. tina regradnes Says:

that’s a sweet story. But, she is divorced so any family ritual she may create now is trumped by the fact that daddy and mommy aren’t together. I remember when they divorce hit the papers; Rob (her ex) was blindsided and upset; but, she proceeded anyway. to me that isn’t a great mother!

  5. Emaline Says:

I did not know they had divorced, makes me so sad!

  6. Jane Says:

Wow, Tina, that is quite a rude thing to say. We don’t know the details of their divorce, she may have had a very good reason for splitting. There’s no point in having mommy and daddy together if they hate each other’s guts, and fight all the time.

  7. Wozzy Says:

I believe that the impetus for the divorce was her same-sex affair.

  8. Hea Says:

Tina – Look, for all you know, he could be a mean partner. He probably isn’t but still, who knows what was behind her decision? I am sure they are both good parents and that’s the important thing. I do not believe in staying together for the kids’ sake. It’s usually a lot harder for everyone than a divorce would be.
