Ioan Gruffudd and Alice Evans are first-time parents after welcoming a girl! Daughter Ella Betsi Janet Gruffudd arrived at 2:16 a.m. on Sunday, September 6th after 40 hours of labor. She weighed in at 6 lbs., 3 oz and was 21 inches long.
“Ella is very small and unbelievably beautiful,” the new mom tells Hello. “[She] hasn’t got much hair yet.” Alice adds that Ella’s second middle name, Janet, is in honor of her mother, who passed away 10 years ago.
The couple, who met while filming 2002’s 102 Dalmatians and wed in fall 2007, announced the pregnancy in April.
Ioan, 35, and Lost actress Alice, 38, knew the sex of the baby prior to delivery, but kept it private.
Of impending parenthood, the Fantastic Four star said,
“I’m sure we have no idea what we are heading into. But we both love each other so much and really hope that we will create an environment of love and happiness.”

Aaww, I remember seeing them in the movie, I didn’t know they were going out together, I didn’t know their names, I just recognized their faces after reading that they met on the movie set of 102 dalmations.
Ella Betsi is a nice name.
I’m sure she is gorgeous.
Congrats

Love Ella, not a huge Betsi fan, but to each their own.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
Betsi is at least different. Congrats to them.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:07 pm
Finally a “normal” name! Congrats to them!
September 9th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
Congrats to the couple! I think Elizabeth would be cute, of course it’d sound odd to have Ella Elizabeth but IMO better than Ella Betsi, because saying it fast kind of sounds like someone getting the word “epilepsy” scrampled around. Ha, just found it interesting. Either way that baby is going to be a doll.

I have to wonder what names some of you DO like. Seems like the same people poopoo names over and over. That’s MY opinion and I know I’m not alone, but like you name trashers say, “to each his/her own” right?

Holey Moley!!! 40 hrs of labor, I can’t even begin to imagine. Congrats to the new family!

I’m not familiar with these people, but thought I would comment because this birth sounds very similar to my own. September 6 is my birthday, I was born at 2:19am, and was also 6 pounds.

Congrats to Ioan and Alice! I’m sure little Ella is just darling.
On a side note, after 40 hours of labor, mom deserves a medal!

Wow, 40 hours, poor thing. What a pretty name. all subjective of course but personally it’s a lot nicer than Sparrow Madden’s name (tweet, tweet, lol)!

Well, what can i say? a baby is a real happiness – especially if you wait for it! it is very responsible to be a parent. Congratulations and good luck to them!

Betsi might be to do with honouring a relative or friend, who cares if it doesn’t flow, this is hardly a qualification for a good name.

What a gorge couple
September 10th, 2009 at 7:06 am

Nice to hear that a celeb went through a very long labor. Can’t stand celebs that have c-sections that are too posh to push
September 10th, 2009 at 8:43 am
Congrats to them! I love the name. Betsi is so cute, and I really like the way they spelled it!
September 10th, 2009 at 8:45 am
Ella is a nice name. I, personally, prefer it as part of a longer name. My daughter’s middle name is Gabriella. Ella is a very pretty name, though.
September 10th, 2009 at 8:46 am
Betsi is a Welsh name as is Ioan. Maybe the new Daddy wanted a Welsh name for his little girl.
September 10th, 2009 at 9:01 am
I figured Betsi is after someone in Ioan’s life or family. Ella is at least nice and normal. a bit common, but better than some other recent ones.
September 10th, 2009 at 10:47 am
I don’t get this “normal” thing. Normal to WHOM?
September 10th, 2009 at 11:26 am
40 hours… thats making me feel faint just sat here reading… poor thing…
but so worth it!
September 10th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
according to a story on http://www.hellomagazine.com about the newborn baby, the full name is Ella Betsi Janet Gruffudd, with the second middle name being used in honor of Alice’s mom who passed away ten years ago to (I think) was some form of cancer.

CONGRATS!!!!!! I love this couple. I love the name too!
September 20th, 2009 at 12:35 am
Probably someone has commented on this already (sorry – just skimmed them) but Betsi is a Welsh name and I was really pleased to see that added in. I suspect it may well have some personal significance to Ioan – I half expected a Megan or Bethan or something equally Welsh. I think they have picked lovely names altogether.
