Michelle Branch on Owen: ‘She’s Pretty Sassy’

It appears as though Michelle Branch will have her work cut out for her with daughter Owen Isabelle, 4. “She’s pretty sassy,” Michelle concedes to OK! “She says a lot of things that are inappropriate at the time.” Case in point? Michelle reveals,
“She tried to give her teacher at her school, who is a nun who is interning, the birds and the bees talk…and I got called by her teacher. That was quite embarrassing for us.”
Noting that “every other day, there’s something new,” Michelle says that — momentary embarrassment aside — motherhood “is amazing.” The mother-daughter duo were looking forward to making some more amazing memories during a low-key weekend getaway to Palm Springs.
“We like to have some time by the pool, and relax,” the 26-year-old songstress says. “I’m a last-minute packer, so I hate packing. Whatever’s clean works.”
Owen is Michelle’s daughter with husband Teddy Landau.

Love the name for a girl, it’s pretty neutral so it’s not too feminine for a boy but I personally think girls can pull it off just as well. Agree with Lis, want some more music by her. Love her!

Kelsey, we don’t really know how in depth the “birds and the bees” talk was. Also, maybe they had been forced to tell her something because she asked where babies come from. That’s a very typical question for curious four year-olds. And, it’s also pretty typicals for four year-olds to tell everyone that they know where babies come from. Better to water down the truth than to lie about the stork.

Kelsey, I don’t think there’s anything surprising about a 4-year-old knowing about “the birds and bees.” I was about the same age when my parents gave me that talk too, simply because I was asking, so I guess it’s a common question for a 4-year-old to ask. From then on, it’s up to the parents to decide how they want to handle the topic: be honest or go on with the stork tale for another while.

i think it’s good she knows about the birds and the bees. why not? it’s something that is totally natural and i’m sure they weren’t too graphic with her! studies show the more that kids know about this and the sooner, the better. it means that you can start explaining things like contraception etc to them sooner (obviously not at four as it doesn’t apply). all of our kids have some idea of babies and where they come from, to varying degrees depending on my age. i’m pretty sure my 7 year old could tell you EXACTLY where babies come from. obviously in a 7 year old way, but he knows his facts. we shouldn’t make this into something wrong or dirty or taboo. i believe if kids have questions they should always feel comfortable to ask them and not get the response “we’ll talk about that when you’re older”.
so, well done to her.

Sarah K., Allie-Rose, and JM- ITA with all of you! I especially love JM’s post. I agree that it’s important to be open with kids about “the birds and the bees”. As long as the dicussion is age-approprite, I don’t see anything wrong with discussing that with a child of any age. Like JM, I think it’s important that children know from an early age that the topic of sex and where babies come from isn’t something that’s dirty or should be avoided.
My parents were always very open with me about the topic, and never acted shocked or horrified when I asked about it. When I did ask about it, they just explained it to me, matter-of-fact, in age approprite terms (for example, when I was really little, they just said that mommies have eggs, and daddies have “seeds”, and those things come together to make a baby. They left out the details of just how those two things come together! They knew those could wait until I was a bit older!). I am very grateful that they handled it the way they did. Thanks to them, I’ve never thought that sex was a taboo or dirty topic.

Totally agree about being open and accurate re birds and bees. Not so keen on sassy 4 yr olds personally. Very fine line between sassy and bratty IMO.

thanks CBBlover. i totally agree. and it was the same for me. my parents were always very open with me. hence, when the time was right i felt i could discuss appropriate contraception with my mum and be fully informed.

I don’t know what birds and bees talk you’ve told your kids, but I’m assuming it’s similar to the one I’ve told my own so I can imagine the nun being freaked out.
My friend tells her daughter that babies came from mommy’s tummy and that daddy put the baby in there! What’s that? Her daughter was three when she heard that nursery tale!!! She also uses these stupid little names for vagina, anus and penis like calling them nee nee and hoo ha. She wants to wait till her daughter is much older to talk to her about STDs and abortion and date rape and refuses to explain the actual process of having sex so that her daughter walks around thinking daddy magically put a baby in mommy’s tummy. It’s weird and I tell her that her daughter will grow up to learn these things from others, if she doesn’t do her job as a parent. She’s repressed though and wants to wait. She says her daughter’s not ready, but I think my friend’s just not ready. Fact is she’ll never be ready.
I’m glad other women aren’t so silly as my friend and that celebrities raise their children to be informed about their sexuality too.
