Halle Berry Says Pregnancy Rumors Gave Her ‘a Complex’
INF |
Walking across the stage in a tight black dress, Halle Berry quickly and definitely put the kibosh on persistent pregnancy rumors during a Thursday appearance on The Jay Leno Show. “I was getting a complex,” the 43-year-old actress admits. “I was like, ‘I’ve got to stop with the burgers or something!’”
Having “put to bed” any and all whispers about a baby-on-the-way, Halle turned to the “fantastic” baby she already has — 18-month-old Nahla Ariela.
She proceeded to tell a “funny” new mom story that only a handful of mothers in the world could possibly relate to. Having graced the cover of Harper’s Bazaar this spring, Halle was at the grocery store with Nahla when her daughter recognized mom’s image on the magazine.
“I’ve got on my sunglasses and I’m in the market. I’m putting all my groceries on the belt, and she’s over my shoulder and I hear her say ‘Mama, Mama,’” Halle recalls. “I knew, ‘Ooh, she saw that cover, that’s cute.’”
A shopper in line behind them then began to coo alongside Nahla, before correcting baby girl. “I heard the woman say, ‘Oh no honey, that’s not your mama, that’s Halle Berry,’” Halle explained. “And I’m like, okay, that’s kind of funny.” Nahla, however, refused to back down on what she already knew to be true!
“Nahla says, ‘Mama! Mama!’ And the lady gets, like, indignant about it, [and said], ‘No, honey, that’s not your mama. That’s Halle Berry.’ And I couldn’t take it any longer so I whipped off my glasses and turned around and I was like, ‘No, I am her mother and I am Halle Berry and she knows what she’s talking about!’ It was one of those great mom moments.”
Nahla is Halle’s daughter with partner Gabriel Aubry.

I saw her on Leno and she looked great — as always. She told so many cute stories.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
I do recall bringing that to attention – any pregnancy rumors that are false are SO embarassing for anyone. Halle Berry isn’t even overweight and somehow, because her decision to keep her private life private makes it okay to announce without confirmation that she’s expecting, she is embarrassed that she’s eating too much. Now why should any media think it’s okay to spread false rumors, especially something so personal as a pregnancy? Give me a break.
September 18th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
On another note, that story is hilarious. Sure showed that woman it’s not okay to correct someone who isn’t your child. Go Halle!
September 18th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
What kind of a woman argues with a baby? lol
September 18th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
OMG, that story is so cute. I like how down-to-earth Halle is and didn’t want to say anything. However, at the same time she is a great mom who knew when to step in and stand up for her daughter. That women must have felt realllllllly stupid.
September 18th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
D.I.V.A.
September 18th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
That is hilarious! I bet that woman was really embarrassed
September 18th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
hahaha so funny..and nahla is adorable
September 18th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
That story is so cute! I love Halle and Nahla is such a beautiful baby; I want her to marry my 18-month old son! LOL
September 18th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
Good Lordy thats funny, but I can’t imagine correcting another womans child, sort of rude really, so I’m glad Halle gave it to her!
September 18th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
I feel bad that Halle felt she had to confront the pregance rumors! I mean, the woman looks fabulous and if she wears anything baggy or has any sort of stomach pooch, the tabloids are like “ooh, she’s pregnant” Sheesh, if I were famous I guess the tabloids would have been reporting me pregnant for the last 10 years, lol. I love the supermarked story, lol…although, I agree w/ Sadie “What kind of person argues with a baby?”
September 18th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Who argues with a baby? That is too funny though! I had to read the story twice! Nahla is too cute!
September 18th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Uhm, I didn’t find the story funny :\
September 18th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
What a stupid story, I dunno halle’s response seems a bit too indignant. But the lady was silly for correcting the kid, its not that serious.
September 18th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
that story is soooooooo cute!!!!!!
September 18th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Lol how could she have not known it was Nahla, lol but who does that, like it even matters?! Cute story & kind of sad Halle isn’t expecting :-]
September 18th, 2009 at 7:06 pm
That is a funny story! My boys have recently started pointing out other dark skinned men when we are out and saying “Dada”. Today, one of them actually went up to one and hugged his leg, then looked up and got scared and ran to me!
September 18th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
Such a funny story!
September 18th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Why isn’t the story funny? I think that the woman was just trying to be silly and engage in conversation with a toddler. She wasn’t trying to “correct” her in the way that a few of you think she was. It wasn’t like Nahla was throwing a tantrum and the woman got down on her level and told her to act like a big girl or something like that. Also, who would ever expect to find Halle Berry and her baby in the checkout line in front of them?
September 18th, 2009 at 8:36 pm
Who the heck corrects a baby/toddler that they don’t even know? I love that she was wrong…lol
September 18th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
The lady was probably just playing around with Nahla. Halle seemed kind of bold and if she didn’t want to let anyone know who she was she would of just said nothing! she probably freaked the lady out!
September 18th, 2009 at 8:42 pm
My baby constantly points at blonde actresses/models: Uma Thurman, Charlisze Theron, anyone really, and says “Mummy”. My 3 yr old son always finds the same magazines and says “They look like you mummy!”. Oh how I wish!
September 18th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
I saw that last night and too felt Halle was a little bit too harsh. She could have simply ignored the woman or maybe turned around and revealed herself but do it in a nicer way. Maybe take off her sunglasses and be like “Actually she’s right, I am Halle Berry.” And then I’m sure the lady would completely understand.
She probably was a bit freaked out about it.
And there go the pregnancy rumors. Kinda upsetting that the one magazine even printed she was pregnant again…. there goes their credibility even more.
September 18th, 2009 at 11:13 pm
I think the story is fun. And I love how Halle handled it. I don’t think it came across rude or anything. Even if she did, who was the stranger to correct & argue with a toddler she doesn’t even know? lol
September 18th, 2009 at 11:41 pm
OMG I laughed so hard!!! Seriously people don’t take it to heart..relax..it’s just Halle Berry..LOL
September 18th, 2009 at 11:45 pm
She was adorable on the Jay Leno show! I loved that story about the lady behind her in the grocery store. Although I just kept thinking, Halle Berry does her own grocery shopping?
September 18th, 2009 at 11:55 pm
I’ve been thinking lately whenever I see magazines claiming women are pregnant..penelope cruz and halle barry come to mind immediatley. Halle barry has made it public knowledge that she tried for a while, and maybe struggled, to conceive. what if she was pregnant and miscarried? How would you feel? That’s one reason I read this blog regularly..they mostly wait to post anything until it’s confirmed.
September 18th, 2009 at 11:56 pm
It’s nice seeing a mother defending her child. Strangers should never correct a child that is not theirs. Halle was right and funny!
September 19th, 2009 at 1:11 am
Mandy- As if Lies and S*&t (a.k.a. Life & Style) has ever been credible. LOL!
Shelly- Right on! Also, Halle has been very open about the fact that she had a difficult time concieving Nahla. With that, the fact that she’s 43 now, and the fact that said a few months ago that, “my mind wants another baby, but my body’s saying something else”, it seems very likely that she’s struggling to concieve baby number 2 as well.
The tabs really need to lay off the pregnancy rumors, especially for women who are older or who have been open about having difficulties concieving (such as Halle and Nicole Kidman, who has said that Sunday was “a miracle”)!
September 19th, 2009 at 1:11 am
Whoops! I meant and/or!
September 19th, 2009 at 2:16 am
I agree Shelley- it must be very hard for a celebrity to hear all the gossip rags saying that you are pregnant if you aren’t, particularly if you are trying for a baby.
September 19th, 2009 at 2:28 am
I bet the lady was just playing around with Nahla, not necessarily correcting her. I’m sure Halle was exaggerating to make the a cute story even more entertaining, I doubt she was harsh to the woman… ☺
September 19th, 2009 at 2:52 am
I would’ve loved to see the expression on the lady’s face at the grocery store. Priceless!
September 19th, 2009 at 5:46 am
I don’t believe that story at all….Halle probably made it up. She’s lied on shows before. Remember the “Jewish cousin nose” joke she later admitted to making up with her assistants before the show? Besides, Halle Berry is recognizable, even with sunglasses. Secondly, who lets a stranger “argue” with a toddler? Nice chit-chat, normal, but arguing with a baby over Halle Berry? Ummmmm no! That’s wierd.
September 19th, 2009 at 8:30 am
Lol, g!na and Mandy, if some random woman were to argue with and correct my child, trust me, I would freak her out. And I’m not even Halle Berry. Halle did the right thing, that woman was very much out of place to be annoying a child she doesn’t know. As others have said, who the hell argues with a baby? I’m sure that woman has learned the the value of minding her own business and leaving people’s babies alone now, lol.
September 19th, 2009 at 11:17 am
Perez Hilton still is stating that she is pregnant. She has been doing the “hold the bag in front of her tummy” tricks for the past month or two. Could she possibly be trying for a baby (she could have a phantom pregnancy going on) or have had a miscarriage? I hope not the latter.
September 19th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
Maybe she’s holding the bag up because she’s embarassed that people think she’s pregnant because in her mind that means she’s getting fat (which is crazy because she is SO NOT fat).
Also, I bet the story that lady is going around telling doesn’t put Halle in a good light….”I was at the grocery store the other day playing with this adorable baby and her mom yelled at me, and it turned out it was Halle Berry…what a @!#$.”
September 19th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
god, the poor woman.
I found her story a little lame, but I can’t believe people on here get seriously upset about it. weird.
September 19th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
I’ll admit it right from the start, I am NOT a fan of Halle Berry. Her acting is fine, but as a celebrity and role model, she leaves a lot to be desired.
That being said, I thought what she wore on The Jay Leno Show was appropriate for a … twenty or thirty-something, but not a 43-year-old woman. I don’t care how great looking your body is, eventually you need to wear clothes more suited to your age.
September 19th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Ashandra: Maybe she just doesn’t want to announce it if she is because she’s not past the 3-month mark yet. Either that, or she really isn’t pregnant.
September 19th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
That story is hilarious! My daughter was determined that a meerkat in a cell phone ad was a puppy and my older daughter tried to correct her, but she wanted none of it: it was a puppy. Finally we just let it be.
Perhaps Nahla was getting frustrated with this woman’s attempt to interact with her and that’s why Halle got so indignant. I know when people get flip with my children in public, I’ve gotten a little beligerant too. Some people seem to think because you are out in public, they get to parent other people’s children.
September 19th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Yeah, who argues with a baby? Haha. I bet the woman was mortified.

September 19th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
I thought the story was cute and perhaps Halle exaggerated for TV purposes but wasn’t really as cocky to the lady in the grocery store when it happened.
blahdeeblah,
Who wouldn’t love for their kids to look at a picture and think their mommy looks like Charlize Theron lol. It’s funny how kids just take the color of one’s hair and assume all blondes or brunettes become their parents! so cute!
September 19th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
HILARIOUS story! I love Halle; in interviews she is so down to earth and candid. Nahla is completely adorable! My best wishes go out to her and Gabriel.
September 19th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
I think the interview was HILARIOUS!!! Halle is sooo funny and such a protective mama bear! Lol! Nahla is getting super big. I pray that she can have another baby. I wish she and Gabriel luck as they try to expand their family.
September 19th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
I can’t believe all the (hopefully feigned) outrage over this woman chatting with the baby. There’s nothing weird or abnormal about talking to, cooing at, or otherwise getting down on the level of a baby slung over its mother’s shoulder. In fact, it would be really awkward to see a baby in such a state and NOT at least speak to them. It’s a funny story, really cute, but most of the time, the woman would’ve been correct that “it’s not your mama on the cover of that magazine.” So it’s awesome how Halle handled it, not mean or anything, just funny.
September 19th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
I’m not a huge Halle Berry fan, but I think it’s odd that some people think she’s lying about this story. What’s so hard to believe? I have 3 kids, and have had countless strangers talk to my babies when I’m in line at the store. My son also thinks any brunette he sees on a magazine is me, so he is constantly saying, “Momma” when we are in line and he sees a magazine. I could totally see someone behind me “correcting” him in a light hearted manner. I think if she “lied” about anything it was probably her reaction to the woman – I bet she had much less attitude than she portrayed on Leno
I think it’s hilarious that she corrected the woman, and don’t blame her a bit – if someone was insisting my baby was wrong, I would have done the same thing.
And, if you live in L.A. you will see celebrities in the supermarket. This woman seemed pretty clueless in general.
Lastly, I’m a little bummed she isn’t pregnant. I think Nahla is the most gorgeous celebrity baby ever and would love to see them have a little boy.
September 19th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
That was actually really cute!!
September 20th, 2009 at 12:37 am
Ashandra- Perez is hardly a reliable source. It’s obvious from this clip that Halle isn’t pregnant (unless it just happened a few days ago or something).
September 20th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Yeah i thought the outfit had too much showing on top and the botttom. She looks great tho
September 20th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
Hey, if I look like that when I’m in my forties, after having a child, you can bet I’m going to flaunt it. Heck, at any age, if I looked like that, I would be showing it off. It’s not like she went on the show naked. I don’t hear anyone complaining when Gwen Stefani wears midriff tops or when Sharon Stone wears sexy dresses, and she’s older than Halle. Great bodies don’t last forever, and when you’re in a business that, for the most part, requires that you maintain your figure, youthful appearance, and sensuality, you can’t be faulted for making a public appearance looking sexy. I see nothing wrong with that. Lots of moms on here are snapped at the beach wearing a bikini…is that not age-appropriate? Should it be mandatory that you wear a one-piece after you hit a certain age? I don’t get it. Halle and her family are gorgeous, and I wish them the best in life and in their endeavors to expand their family, if that’s what they want to do, or if they just want to enjoy Nahla. That little girl definitely appears to have parents who are crazy about her and who enjoy taking care of her. What more could a child ask for?
September 20th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
anddd the green monster rears its ugly head:
“I don’t care how great looking your body is, eventually you need to wear clothes more suited to your age.”
Jenna, she’s in better condition than most 20smthgs and 30smthgs–have you seen the terrible bodies on young women (and men) these days??
And do you buy her clothes? If so, please dictate what she can wear; otherwise, carry on. What’s interesting about dressing like everyone else, or how everyone tells you SHOULD dress for your age?
Individuality is not a crime. Try it sometime.
September 20th, 2009 at 11:44 pm
Ha! Ha! Bette.
“Individuality” you say? I thought Halle Berry looked more like Britney Spears in that outfit. If that was what she was going for, she succeeded. She could have gotten the point across that she was not pregnant (and in shape) by wearing an elegant evening gown, cocktail dress, or simple skinny jeans and a t-shirt, but she decided to wear that outfit. I stand by what I said earlier, I don’t believe it was appropriate for someone her age, regardless of the shape her body was in. To each her own.
September 21st, 2009 at 12:37 am
I think Halle looks smokin hot! She’s got an amazing figure and a HAWT boyfriend! Go Halle!
September 21st, 2009 at 1:41 am
Jenna- Can you please explain why it’s not approprite for someone her age? And also, do you say the same things about Gwen Stefani’s outfits, or would you say the same thing if Nicole Kidman was seen in an outfit like what Halle wore on the show? Gwen is about 40 (I’m not sure if she’s had her birthday yet or not), and Nicole is just one year younger than Halle, at 42.
September 21st, 2009 at 8:42 am
i’m so over Halle and thought the appearance on Jay Leno was lame.. why even bother? she could have easily worn that dress or something similar out in public and people would’ve figured it out on their own.. oh well.. Nahla is a beauty though..
September 21st, 2009 at 10:22 am
“how could she have not known it was Nahla” I wouldn’t know Nahla if she was in my area. I look at this site for the cute stories and such. I couldn’t tell you one celeb’s kid from another honestly. The woman was kind of ditzy for getting so serious about it but I’m glad that Halle put her in her place! I love Halle and so what if she’s eaten a few too many burgers. Who hasn’t. It’s her life, let her live it.
September 21st, 2009 at 11:22 am
whatever, halle, get over yourself. who wears sunglasses in a store unless they’re trying to go incognito? but then to be so indignant to a total stranger who was just talking to the baby–not her? she should have been grateful that she wasn’t recognized or bothered by fans while out spending time with her daughter and let the conversation go.
September 21st, 2009 at 12:35 pm
I wear sunglasses in stores just about all the time. I’m not trying to be incognito. I just dislike supermarket lighting. Why should Halle be grateful someone is teaching her child to doubt her own mind? If the child is right, she’s right. Some stranger shouldn’t be telling her not to trust her own eyes.
Why is it lame for Halle to go on her friend’s show? She’s an A-List actress and a good ratings draw for Leno. Let his show prove she’s not preggers. Why give that info to the paparazzi?
September 21st, 2009 at 6:10 pm
I’m not a big Halle fan…something about her rubs me the wrong way. BUT I can say that the woman has a bod that many 20somethings wish they had. And if I had a bod like hers I’d wear whatever I wanted at her age, as long as it wasn’t too revealing. And IMHO this outfit was ok – why can’t a woman in her 40s be proud of her body and show some leg and some boobage?
September 22nd, 2009 at 2:09 am
SweetDiva- I couldn’t agree more! Plenty of non-celebs wear sunglasses indoors from time to time, and usually it’s for a reason other than trying to be incognito.
I also agree with you about how Halle handled the sitaution. I mean, I don’t know too many parents who wouldn’t speak up if someone was correcting their baby (especially if, like in Halle’s case, it was an incorrect correction). Like other people have said, who corrects a BABY?
September 22nd, 2009 at 12:36 pm
I too think Halle looks great for her age and can pull off some of the trendier styles that many, even years younger, cannot.
But I also found her grocery store moment to be rather interesting, as I’m sure she didn’t mince words when confronting the woman behind her. I had my own Halle moment a few years back in a restaurant. Without going into detail, let me just say this woman is far from kindly when things are not to her liking. I felt the treatment given the waitstaff was highly unbecoming….and my opionion of her changed immediately. I can’t stand people who think they’re better than everyone else.
October 7th, 2009 at 8:04 pm
That just sounds b*tchy to me. There was no need for rudeness… it makes sense that you wouldn’t think that Halle Berry is really a little girl’s mom who is at the grocery store. That’s just too much attitude on her part. Not amused by her. It’s not a mom protecting her child or whatever. It’s just an actress acting too big for her britches.
October 8th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
The woman was probably being playful andwasn’t trying to “correct” Nahla – and what if she was – so what. The odds are a million to one she’s talking to Halle Berry’s kid at the grocery store. I hope she was indeed exagerating the story because, frankly, I found her reaction rather rude. She’s such a beautiful woman but she acts too ghetto for me at times.
October 12th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
This story is so cute, but the woman appeared a bit rude. Who am I as a stranger to correct a baby for saying Mama when I don’t even know who her Mama is? That was funny! I thought Halle Berry looked cuter with longer hair. Apparently I forgot how Fierce and Bad she is with that short cut! That’s the Halle Berry we’ve all known for years–short hair! LOL
