Naomi Watts Says Sons Are ‘Endlessly Fascinating’

Jackson Lee/Splash News Online

Likening motherhood to “science fiction,” actress Naomi Watts says she continues to marvel at sons Alexander ‘Sasha’ Pete, 2, and Samuel Kai, 10 months  – and how they came to be.

“I still can’t believe it when I look at my children that they came from one little moment and they’re people,” she admits. “They’re babies and people and they learn and figure out all these things and you go, ‘God, I can’t believe it.’”

To hear the 41-year-old Funny Games star tell it, however, this time is just the quiet before the storm! She jokes,

“They’re so surprising and endlessly fascinating and soon they’re going to have problems. Now they’re just innocent little beings, learning and growing, but soon they’ll be all f–ked up.”

In her new film Mother and Child, Naomi portrays a lawyer who delays starting a family in order to focus on her career. “I can relate to that,” Naomi says. “I think that there have been times, though certainly not lately, as I’ve slowed down a lot.”

Fiancé Liev Schreiber deserves much of the credit for that, Naomi says.

“At the beginning, when things were taking off for me in America, I was on the treadmill and I didn’t want to have a relationship particularly,” she explains. “I wanted to travel a lot. I come from a background, that was not a troubled childhood or anything, but there has been some sadness, perhaps that I didn’t want to face and work seemed like a good option.”

“But now I’ve changed a lot. I’ve slowed down and have a family. When I met Liev things changed.”

Mother and Child debuted at the Toronto Film Festival last month.

What a strange comment! “They’re so surprising and endlessly fascinating and soon they’re going to have problems. Now they’re just innocent little beings, learning and growing, but soon they’ll be all f–ked up.”

Maybe instead of focusing on “soon they’re going to have problems” and “soon they’ll be all f–ked up” perhaps Naomi and Liev should focus on doing everything she can to ensure there’s no problems and they won’t be all f–ked up?

So strange she said something like that.

i really like her. and liev too. they seem great. and sasha is the cutest boy i know (well, beside my two boys…).

  3. Sara Says:

I agree Eternal Canadian. I mean, I know what she’s saying, but I guess it just sounded kind of weird.

  4. Sharon Says:

yes i agree i think that was a very strange comment from her and its a little dissapointing, i dont know why she thinks that will happen

It’s just a phrase, and a joke phrase at that- one that I’ve heard from tons of people when asked about their kids. “Doing my best, parenting is hard, hope I don’t screw them up”. It’s like saying you hope you kid doesn’t end up in therapy b/c you made them eat vegetables, or left them crying at daycare or whatever. It’s just different for her b/c its printed in a magazine.

Why are some people on this board so damn touchy? Jeez. Its like they always look for an excuse to pounce. People, read the source. She wasn’t being serious. This is nothing but a joke that didn’t go over well, and she quickly realized it.

“The actress catches herself and laughs, before quickly apologising, “Sorry I didn’t mean to go there.”

Why was this quote left out, by the way?

People are too serious, we say the college fund is either for college or bail money whichever is needed…

  8. Kasee Says:

I thought it was a really funny comment. I think it’s way more refreshing to hear a something like that, which was obviously a self-deprecating joke about her worries she and Liev are going to screw up, than an overblown comment like like, “oh my child is very into art” in a way that sounds like the kid is perusing Van Gogh at the National Gallery when in reality he/she just likes to scribble in a coloring book like every small child.

  9. Emily Says:

I don’t think her comment was weird. She was being honest and perhaps she worded herself that way because it was more conversational in the interview. It really is the truth, unfortunately. The world has a lot of issues and raising children in a safe environment does not always protect them from what happens when they have to step outside of that.
