Marcia Cross Says Twins Choose ‘Boring’ Clothes

Frederico Allende/Broadimage

It’s in the genes! Marcia Cross said during a Friday appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that her own understated style has been adopted by 2 ½-year-old twin daughters Eden and Savannah.

Calling herself “a terrible dresser” when left to fend for herself — “everything you see [me in] is made up from somebody else,” she explains — Marcia was hoping the lack of fashion sense would be limited to mom, only.

“I thought maybe these girls will have a little something going on,” she explains. “So I was like, ‘Whatever you want to wear…’”

While the girls opted not to dress themselves alike, they also opted not to dress themselves with much pizzazz! Says Marcia,

“I have one who will only wear navy blue from head to toe — that’s Savannah, who we call Savvy. Socks, underwear, leggings, shirt and navy blue ties in her hair. Eden will only wear a green shirt and black pants. It looks like I’m a really boring dresser and now I dress my kids that way, but truthfully it was [their] choice!”

Eden and Savannah are Marcia’s children with husband Tom Mahoney.

I don’t understand how a girls of 2 and half years is allowed to choose to wear clothing …. please!!!

  2. Anders Says:

Brenda, I think what Marcia was saying is that she allows her daughters to choose what clothes they want to wear. My mom did the same thing with me and my sisters when we were younger. Obviously, clothes were required, but we got a bit of freedom most of the time as to what we wanted to put on.

  3. Emma Says:

brenda why would you even care? i think its a cute story and why not let them be kids?

  4. Lana Says:

Cute story. And in the latest pics of Marcia out with Eden and Savannah, they are dressed similar to what is described. Eden has on a green shirt and black pants. Savannah has on a blue shirt and blue shoes.

  5. Erika Says:

Brenda, why not? It helps inspire and encourage creativity in children. Plus it makes them feel important which is beneficial for their self esteem. A child shouldn’t be able to choose a tank top, shorts and flip flops in January, but other than weather appropriate, and maybe seriously mismatched, why not? I’m curious to know your reasoning, honestly.

  6. finais Says:

    Well said, Erika!

  7. Laymoona Says:

I love those names. Eden is so pretty!!

  8. Benigna Marko Says:

Why wouldn’t they be allowed to choose? I let my 3 and 5 year olds pick their clothes and then I let them dress themselves, it’s good for them to let them feel like they have some control. I still tell them if something is not appropriate due to the weather or occasion and that they need to pick something else, but they do have a choice in the matter. I’ll admit there are certain styles I wouldn’t let them choose, but I am the mom and the one who buys their clothes so I just don’t buy clothes I wouldn’t want them wearing.

  10. Kimberlee Chrisman Says:

I love this family. So real and beautiful. It didn’t even cross my mind 25 years ago to let my children choose their own clothing. I wished I would have. I think that encourages independence and self expresssion. Love it

  11. Shan Says:

My 4 year old usually picks her own outfits. She normally likes everything to match, but sometimes, she wants to go grocery shopping in a tutu and a big hat. I do not see a problem with it and I enjoy seeing the things that she comes up with.

  12. Jane Says:

What a cute story! My mother allowed me to pick out my clothes when I was about four too.

  13. Karen Says:

    Brenda
I let my 3 1/2 yr old daughter pick out her clothes. She learns that she has some independance. Also, she learns that her choices, no matter how simple or complex, have consquences. If picks out an incredibily mis matched outfit (as she normally does) 1 of 2 things will happen. She will get a little bit of bad attention, and not pick out something like that again; or she learn that she can grow up and march to her own beat.

Personally, I think there are so many more things to worry about than what a child is wearing.

When I was pregnant; i was told that I would have to pick and choose my battles, this is one that I decided she can have control over.

  14. kris Says:

Cute story. I am a boring dresser myself so this made me laugh. My boys, 4 1/2 and 7 1/2, pick their own clothes out. My older one has always been pretty good at matching but my younger one goes mostly on which pair of pants he he likes that day and which shirt. Weather they match or not. My feeling is if they get themselves dressed I don’t care. They do have to wear weather appropriate clothes but other than that whatever goes. Good for Marcia!

  15. LeeLee Says:

They chose what they have in their closets/drawers, which I’m sure they didn’t pick out to buy…. Marcia should take the little ladies shopping and THEN see if they still gravitate towards the “boring.” Not that it really matters at 2 and a half!

  16. Nanny-Emma Says:

Brenda, do you have a 2 year old? Trust me they WANT to choose their own clothes and its not worth the battle.

  17. janet Says:

I so laughed at this story! I remember 27 years ago (gulp!) when my niece was 2 and my sister allowed her to dress herself….and she would proudly come down the stairs in polka dotted socks, bright pink cords, a completely mismatched sweater – and usually with a hat on. Every day I waited every day to see what she’d wear because it was such a highlight to my day and the typical corporate garb I was dressed in. Kudos to Ms Cross for allowing them, with what appears the same panache as my sister, to allow her children to just be.

  18. imkeh Says:

I have no choice, I have to let my daughter choose her clothes or else it would be a battle every time she got dressed. I just give her several options, and sometimes if she’ll have none of the options I’ll let her have at it as long as its not completely inappropriate. I mean part of the fun of being a kid is playing dress up! She has gone out in a tutu or her hula skirt over her clothes.

  19. pam Says:

Her kids might be boring dressers, but they are adorable, as is Marcia. What a beautiful bunch of redheads!

  20. CelebBabyLover Says:

Erika- I agree! As long the outfit is weather approprite, and you’re not going to church, a wedding, or some other event where more formal attire is required, what’s the harm in letting kids decide what they want to wear?

  21. Sarah Says:

    I agree 100% with Amanda (#9)!!

    :)

  22. TwinzGear Says:

My twins are identical boys and although they might not be as fun to “dress up” as the girls, but we still enjoy mixing an matching up their clothes. We usually opt for matching shirts in different colors. One of my twins loves red and the other one loves orange so we have lots of matching shirts in those colors!!!
