Alicia Minshew: I Knew About Pregnancy Right Away

Summing up the thoughts of many, Alicia Minshew doesn’t mince words when asked by Pregnancy magazine to describe the less than glamorous first trimester.
“In the beginning when I was more bloated with the fluctuation of hormones and all the bread I was eating when I wasn’t nauseated,” she explains, “I just wanted to vomit and sleep.”
Due to deliver a daughter in November, Alicia says she’s known for quite some time that a baby was on the way.
“This is going to sound crazy, but I knew when I conceived,” she explains. “I’m one of those odd people who’s so in tune with my body.”
“I remember having sort of a cramping feeling. I guess they call it the implantation, when the egg is actually implanting. And I remember feeling that and going, I think I’m pregnant.”
A few days later, Alicia got all the proof she needed with a home pregnancy test.
“Of course I sort of smiled and jumped up and down quietly n my bathroom, and then I proceeded to wake my husband up by shoving the stick in his face,” Alicia recalls. “He was like, ‘What is that? Is that yours?’”
After waking up fully, Richie Herschenfeld and Alicia “just started to laugh and hug and kiss,” she shares. “It was such a fun, great morning, the two of us in bed.”
“He said, ‘Well, that’s the best way I’ve ever woken up.’”

Hopeful that her baby girl will inherit mom’s sense of humor, Alicia says there are other aspects of her personality she would not like to see repeated! “I’m sort of regimented and I’m not as spontaneous as I would like to be,” she admits. “I don’t want to say that I’m neurotic, but I definitely could have a slight neurosis about me. I would like for her to be able to just let go more.”
At no time was that “slight neurosis” more apparent than when Alicia took a tour of the hospital she will ultimately deliver at. The All My Children star — who took part in the legendary soap opera’s “baby swap” storyline — was forced to consider the unthinkable, and unlikely, scenario happening in real life.
“I turned to my husband and said ‘Oh my God, what if they give us the wrong baby?’ And then my fear set in of what has happened on every soap opera with baby swap. I’m going to have to have my husband and my mom keeping an eye on that baby 24/7. I’m going to have to draw a little circle on her foot or something.”
For now, Alicia has her daughter all too herself — something she enjoys very much. Calling fetal movement the best thing about being pregnant, Alicia adds,
“The movement of the baby is the most incredible thing I’ve ever experienced in my entire life.”

I love love love her but my Lord she makes me sick–look at how tiny she is?! I know she’s a naturally thin but my goodness that makes me so jealous!! LOL I looked like a fat cow when I was near the end of both of my pregnancies!! LOL

Alicia is gorgeous all the time, but she has an extra special glow about her now. I know her daughter will be just as beautiful as she is….inside and out! She and Ritchie will be great parents.

She is honestly one of the most beautiful pregnant woman i’ve seen! Amazing eyes and hair and such presence in that cover! Congrats to her. Is her character pregnant too?

Implantation does not occur until 9 or 10 days after ovulation (when one would normally conceive). I’m sure she had a sense she was pregnant, but implantation does not occur at the moment of conception.

I also knew the exact moment of implantation, so I know what she is talking about! I SO miss feeling a baby move in my belly -that was my favorite thing too! Can’t wait to hear what she names her little sweetheart!

9 or 10 days is simply an average, and depending on the length of your luteal phase and when you conceive during ovulation, it is possible to implant on the day that your egg is fertilized. Please go to medical school (like I did) before giving out medical advice. You undermine all of us with your invalid information, and we deserve recognition for our hard work. Thanks!

Dear “Doc” – The length of a woman’s luteal phase has nothing to do with when the blastocyst implants in the uterine wall. Implantation can take place at 7 days past ovulation for a woman with a 16 day luteal phase, 10 days past ovulation for a woman with an 11 day luteal phase; the length of her secretory phase makes absolutely no difference.
Further, with respect to “when you conceive during ovulation” — a female human can conceive only once during ovulation, after the egg is released, and the egg lives at most 24 hours. Sperm can live in the Fallopian tubes for several days…but a woman’s egg is viable for only a short period. Therefore, conception does not begin to occur until after ovulation takes place.
Lastly, it’s impossible for the egg to implant on the day it is fertilized. It takes the fertilized egg (called a zygote) several days to travel down the Fallopian tubes to the uterus, and implantation does not even begin to occur until this journey is complete.
Hope this helps…from a wife, mom of three, and general practitioner who wanted to clear up this “invalid information” so pompously provided for your obfuscation.

I didn’t find out until i was 8 weeks, because i had the cramping feeling. Once my son was born i really missed feeling him move. Congrats to alicia and richie x
