The year in unusual celebrity baby names
Ah, everyone loves unusual celebrity baby names and you’re bound to see lists elsewhere but here at Celebrity Baby Blog, we keep track of them just because they’re babies, not because we think their names are funny.
Before you post a comment about how it’s wrong to give a child an unusual name, read what Penn Jillette, father of Moxie CrimeFighter and Zolten Penn told us earlier this year about unusual names:
I think it’s pretty cruel to give a kid a name that others are going to have. I think it’s very important to have a unique name within any group you’re likely to be in. It’s more friendly to go to school being the only "Penn" then to have to be called by your full name, "Mike Jones" or whatever. I always felt sorry for the Mikes and Bobs. There’s just so many, how do you know when they’re talking to you?
Here we go…
Actress Drea de Matteo, 35, and rocker Shooter Jennings, 28, welcomed daughter Alabama Gypsyrose in November.
Milla Jovovich and Paul W.S. Anderson welcomed their first child, daughter Ever Gabo, on Saturday, November 3rd. Milla, 31, explained the origin of her daughter’s name on her website,
The name Ever is a Scottish boy’s name — Paul [W.S. Anderson]has Scottish blood in him (not to mention two tartans in his family!)so we wanted to give her a name that reflected her "Celtic" roots, while her middle name Gabo — pronounced "Gabeau" — is a mixture of myparents names! The first two letters are after my mom’s first name,Galina and the last two letters are after my dad’s first name Bogie!
Christian singers Jaci Velasquez, 28, and Nic Gonzales welcomed their son Zealand David on November 3rd.
Red Hot Chili Pepper rocker Anthony Kiedis, 44, and his model girlfriend, Heather Christie, 22, welcomed Everly Bear in October. Anthony said:
We had a long list of names, but suppose it came to me by way of the Everly Brothers, which is one of my favorite bands. And sometimes last names make good first names.
Anthony explained that Heather helped choose the second part of Everly’s name – ‘bear’. He said:
The mama came up with Bear. That made sense to me because he’s from me and I feel like I’m part of the bear clan, and I think it’s nice to have a little bit of earth in your name.
Actress Gretchen Mol, 34, and her husband, director Tod ‘Kip’ Williams, 38, welcomed son Ptolemy John on September 10th in NYC.
Riders of the Storm and former Fuel frontman Brett Scallions, 35, and his wife MTV2 VJ Abby Gennet welcomed their first child, son Jagger Song Scallions, on September 7.
Actress Iyari Limon, 31, has revealed that she gave birth to her first child, daughter Kimaya Thais, on Friday, August 24th. Iyari said, "Kimaya = Divine in Sanskrit and Thais=Bond (Greek)."
Minnesota Twins player Rondell White, 35, and his wife, Zanovia, welcomed daughter Zaiya on Friday, September 21 at 11:40 p.m. The couple’s first child weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces.
Pittsburgh Pirates player Jack Wilson, 29, and his wife, Julie, welcomed their third child, daughter Jersi Grace, in September. In regards to Jersi’s unique name, Jack reveals,
I got to pick the name because it was a girl. If it had been a boy, my wife would have picked the name. We have all J’s in our family, and we are Christians. I found Jersi in a book, and there’s a corny baseball connection (to jersey), even though it is spelled in a different way. It’s not a household name. I like that.
Actress Hermione Norris and her husband, Simon Wheeler, recently welcomed daughter Hero. She weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces. Hermione named her daughter after an 80-year-old woman that she met that was named Hero. Simon said of his new daughter, that the couple is "absolutely thrilled."
Jason Albert, the lead singer for country band Heartland, and his wife, Kelly, welcomed daughter Kelson Noel on Tuesday, August 14 in Huntsville, Alabama. She weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces.
Miami Dolphins running back Lorenzo Booker and his girlfriend welcomed their first child, son Kayin Elijah Booker on Sunday, August 12.
Dancing With The Stars dancer Ashly Delgrosso Costa, 25, and her husband Mike Costa welcomed their first child on July 27th, a week past her due date. Ammon Michael was born at 7:01 am at Tobey Hospital in Wareham, MA. In Egyptian, Ammon means ‘the hidden one’. He was a god of wind and air in Egyptian mythology, later his attributes were combined with another god, Ra, and was worshiped as Amon-Ra. However, Ashly, who is LDS, drew the name from the Book of Mormon, as did recent celebrity dad Brandon Flowers of the Killers.
Actress Jenna Elfman, 35, and her husband Bodhi, 38, welcomed son Story Elias on Monday, July 23rd. In his introduction post, Jenna explained the name,
In September 2006, just before we started trying to conceive, Bodhi turned to me in bed and said, ‘How about Story Elias?’ I just loved it.
Bodhi adds, ‘I just think ’story’ is a great word. What’s better than a great story?’

Katie Price and Peter Andre named their June-born daughter Princess Tiaamii ("tee-ah-me"). The name is a combination of her two grandmother’s names; Thea after Peter’s mom and Amy after Katie’s mom. Katie said,
We’ve put an accent over the first ’a’ to make it a bit more exotic and two ’i’s at the end just to make it look a bit different. We love it because it’s unique, plus it means something special to us.
Peter added,
Katie always loved the name Princess but everyone thought it was a bit over the top. I loved it too but I wanted to name her after both our mums and then I just woke up one morning and thought ’I know! We’ll just put them together!’. If people don’t like it, that’s up to them. We’re really happy and proud.
Bruce Bowen — a guard for the San Antonio Spurs — became a father for the second time in June, when wife Yardley Bowen gave birth to the couple’s second son, 6 lb, 11 oz. Ozmel at 9:19 a.m.

Alimayu joins sisters Iset, 5 1/2, and Jua, as well as brother Jelani Asar, 19. Baby Name Bible co-author Linda Rosencrantz tells us that Alimayu appears to be a rare Swahili name, meaning "God is honored."
Poison guitarist C.C. DeVille and his girlfriend, Shannon Malone have welcomed their first child together, a son. The little boy, who weighed in at 7 lbs 2 oz has been named Vallon DeVille Johannesson (this is C.C.’s real last name – his first name is Bruce).

Alexander means leader of men, which is auspicious. But he doesn’t have to be a leader if he doesn’t want to. And Cash was a name that my husband loved and chose…it’s kind of cowboy-esque. It’s the name that we always liked the most [during pregnancy] but popped a few more names into the ring to have options. We were going to wait to see what he looked like…even though we knew he was going to be Cash.
Rocker Scott Stapp and his wife Jaclyn, former Miss New York, welcomed their first child together. Milán Hayat Stapp was born in Miami, FL in January. She weighed 6 lbs 7 oz and was 20 inches long. She joins big brother Jagger, 8, from Scott’s previous marriage.

The year in celebrity adoption
Celebrities have brought adoption to the forefront these last few years, but in 2007 especially.
Here are the celebrities who adopted children this year.
In September, Mary-Louise Parker adopted her daughter Ash from Africa.
In June, Johnson & Johnson heiress Casey Johnson, adopted a little girl from Kazakhstan, who she named Ava Monroe Johnson (after her idol Marilyn Monroe).
Sheryl Crow welcomed son Wyatt Steven Crow on April 29th and brought him home the next day. She said of the process,
I’ve always wanted to adopt. Even if I’d had my own kids, I would have adopted. I love the idea of adopting. I always thought I had an immense amount of love to give. I got started at the end of my radiation treatment [in Spring 2006]. I knew it would take a long time. They don’t put you at the front of the line just because you’re a rock star.

Bucking the international adoption trend, ER actor Goran Visnjic and his wife, sculptor Ivana Vrdoljak adopted an American baby, a son they named Tin (pronounced T-ee-n, with a long ‘e’) Visnjic in April. Ivana was present at the birth and cut the cord, but Goran wasn’t present because they wanted to avoid the publicity.
(This is the couple’s first child together, but in November, Goran admitted he fathered a Croatian woman’s daughter, who was named Lana Lourdes.)
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt adopted their son Pax Thien Jolie, born in November 2003, from Vietnam in March. In their family, adopted kids outnumber their biological kids- Maddox Chivan was adopted from Cambodia in 2001, Zahara Marley from Ethiopia in 2005, and they welcomed Shiloh Nouvel in Namibia in 2006.
Technically, Angelina adopted Pax as a single woman but Brad considers him to be his child, just like their 3 other kids. He has said,
They’re as much my blood as I am theirs. And they are brothers and sisters. One came from Ethiopia, one from Vietnam, one from Cambodia, and one was born in Namibia. And they are brothers and sisters, and they have fun and they squabble and they fight, just like any other family. And it makes me so proud.
Awareness
November is National Adoption Month and several events involving celebrity parents helped raise awareness to the unique honor of being chosen.
On November 29th, Lauren Holly, an adoptive mom of 3,, together with Hot Moms Club and Sirens Society, hosted Still Thankful, Still Giving, a fundraising event, to promote adoption awareness and raise money for the orphanage Casa Hogar Sion in Tijuana, Mexico. Proceeds also went towards sending Jr. Sirens on a field trip to get hands on experience at volunteering at the orphanage, while seeing the positive impact they can make in the world.
Country music singer/songwriter Rodney Atkins performed on Friday, November 16th during a celebration for National Adoption Day at the White House. Joining the 38-year-old was his five-year-old son Elijah. Performing was very important for Rodney, who was adopted as a baby.
Tiny Revolutionary ’s "Chosen" tee is a lovely positive affirmation just for adopted children, and especially to celebrate National Adoption Month. But, as our Ciaran wrote, "as an adoptive parent and adoption advocate I am proud of my chosen child every day of every month and every year." Adopted Celebrities
On Good Day LA, new mom Jillian Barberie Reynolds became visibly moved as she described the whirlwind of emotions she felt upon meeting her daughter, Ruby Raven, for the first time. Jillian, who was adopted, cried so hard during the delivery her husband Grant said he thought she was actually having a seizure. Recalled Jillian:
I couldn’t talk. I was thinking about my birth mom, how they put me on her for five minutes and then took me away forever, and I didn’t meet her again for 34-years. It made me so emotional.

The year in celebrity home/water/natural childbirth
Women have been giving birth naturally (without drugs) for thousands of years. In a time when elective c-sections are on the rise, there are still many mothers opting to give birth at home, in water, and/or without medication. Here are a few celebrity mothers who went this route and talked about it this year.
Charlotte Church delivered daughter, Ruby Megan Henson, at home in a birthing pool with minimal drugs. She is also breastfeeding and co-sleeping. Talking with boyfriend Gavin Henson to OK! magazine, she said,
I was telling you I loved you, wasn’t I? Saying ‘I loveyou, but I can’t do this!’ You were brilliant, you kept saying, ‘Justget through this one.’
I was so anxious before, thinking, ‘Is it really going to hurt that much?’ And it really does hurt that muchand ten million times more! The pain is outrageous!
Kellie Martin was set on giving birth naturally and was disappointed she had to be induced because daughter Maggie didn’t want to come on her own.
I was induced, and I really, really wanted to have her naturally. No drugs, no nothing, because that’s what my mom did with me so Ifigured — you know — I’m as tough as my mother!
She changed her mind after her water broke, but her husband and her nurse helped her get through it.
We got a couple of hours into the real, good contractions and theybroke my water… and once that happened, I said ‘Okay, no, no, no,no… can’t do it. Can’t do it! Drugs! Somebody help me…I have tohave drugs.’ And my husband knew how important it was to me to haveMaggie naturally so he just kept changing the subject, and my nursekept changing the subject…She’d be like ‘Ooooh, look! It’s sobeautiful outside!’ And I was like, ‘Seriously, no one is listening tome.’ And by that point I’d really forgotten that I needed the drugs, and it was time to push.
Lisa Bonet (aka Lilakoi Moon) gave birth to daughter Lola Iolani Momoa at home.
Dave Matthews and his wife Ashley welcomed their third child, August Oliver Matthews, at home. Dave said, believing homebirth comes with its own set of benefits,
We had him at home, which was nice, because I knew where the beer was.
Ani DiFranco gave birth to daughter, Petah Lucia DiFranco Napolitano, at home, and believes,
Birth is the epicenter of women’s power.
Actress AJ Langer, best known as Rayanne on My So-Called Life, gave birth to daughter Joscelyn Skye at home in water, with her husband, Lord Charles Courtenay, the future Earl of Devon, helping to catch the baby.
Supermodel and cosmetics entrepreneur Josie Maran considers herself to be relatively eco-conscious, and integrates her green knowledge into motherhood as well. She said,
I gave birth to Rumi in my backyard. Ipractice what I preach.
Ricki Lake’s documentary about homebirth, The Business of Being Born, debuted with a standing ovation at the Tribeca Film Festival. Catch a screening near you in 2008. She gave birth to her second son Owen, now 5, at home in a bathtub. She told The Huffington Post,
I wanted to make this movie after my two very different birthexperiences with my children. I felt like I had an opportunity toexplore and question birthing practices in this country and perhaps bean advocate for mothers’ rights and better maternity care.
Joely Fisher gave birth at home to her second daughter, True Harlow Fisher-Duddy, saying,
I decided to have her at home and had a lot of friends around and ofcourse her father was there. And of course, the doctor, the doula, themidwife, the butcher, baker and candlestick maker.

The year in celebrity babywearing
2007 was definitely a big year for babywearing, as many celebrity moms and dads opted to carry their infants and toddlers in slings, pouches and other babywearing implements instead of strollers.
Here are just a few of our favorite babywearing photos from 2007.
Brand new mama Keri Russell was spotted running errands with her son River Russell Deary in a PSling ring sling at the tender age of 1 1/2 weeks. (She has since switched to a New Native organic cotton pouch.)
Fellow new mom/New Yorker/iced coffee drinker Maggie Gyllenhaal wore her daughter in a Moby wrap.
Julia Roberts‘ third child, Henry Moder, made his debut in a ring sling at 11 days old, too.
Naomi Watts and Liev Shreiber have worn son Alexander "Sasha" Schreiber in a Maya Wrap lightly padded ring sling.
Annabeth Gish said that her favorite baby gear for son Cash includes "the carrying things:"
What I always loved seeing was mothers with their slings and the Baby Bjorn – the carrying things. I really like the Maya, the Moby, and the New Native. I like the Maya the best.
Gwen Stefani and husband Gavin Rossdale have worn son Kingston Rossdale in ring slings like this one from Psling New York.
Amanda Peet brought daughter Frances Pen Benioff to a writer’s strike picket line in an Ergo baby carrier.
Sara Gilbert met up with Tobey Maguire, his jewelry designer wife, Jennifer Meyer, and daughter Ruby Sweetheart, at a pumpkin patch, wearing daughter Sawyer in a Baby K’tan carrier.
Lisa Leslie wore her daughter Lauren Jolie Lockwood in a New Native pouch to a game.

The year in celebrity attachment parenting
Attachment parenting is a philosophy that is based on certain nurturing parenting practices in order to create strong emotional bonds which help the child develop secure, empathic, peaceful, and enduring relationships. These practices include natural childbirth, home birth, stay-at-home parenting, co-sleeping, breastfeeding, babywearing, cloth diapering, homeschooling/unschooling, not circumcising, not vaccinating, natural health, and support of organic food and other products. It’s not necessary to subscribe to all of these practices but many hardcore APers do. (For example, many women breastfeed, wear their babies, co-sleep, eat organic when possible but delivered in a hospital with an epidural.)
The things that celebrities say and do can clue us in to their parenting style. Here are a few quotes we posted about this year.
Co-sleeping
Angelina Jolie told Esquire magazine:
Rightnow, Pax is sleeping in our bed. It’s kind of nice, him immediatelyknowing and feeling comfortable with us. Mad slept with meuntil Brad and I got together. They’re fun to sleep with. We havefamily sleep on Sundays. Everybody sleeps together.
New Zealand model Kylie Bax told Woman’s Day magazine, after the birth of her second child, Dione Nefeli, "We have four people in the bed now!" (Her other child is daughter, Lito, 3.)
Kevin Kline, his wife Phoebe Cates, and their children, Owen, 16, and Greta, 13, still share a bed. He told OK! Magazine,
There is a theory that a child has to teach itself to go to sleep, andif every time it cries, you whisk them out of their bed — the jury isstill out on that. But our kids still sleep in our bed.
Cloth diapering
The following celebrities cloth diaper their children…
- Singer Dave Matthews — son August Oliver. Dave has also spoken on the issue.
- Actors Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard — daughter Ramona — uncle Jake Gyllenhaal has spoken about his niece’s diapers.
- CSI: NY actress Anna Belknap cloth diapers her daughter.
- Singer and actress couple Brad and Kimberly Williams-Paisley cloth diaper their son William Huckleberry.
- Numb3rs actress Diane Farr cloth diapers her sonBeckett Mancuso.
- Model and actress Josie Maran uses gDiapers with her daughter Rumi Joon.

The year in celebrity breastfeeding
Over at Motherwear’s blog, guest blogger Kelly did a 2007 celebrity breastfeeding news round-up. Categories include lactivist of the year, new to the club, graduating class, dad power, and celebrity moment of the year. If you’re a regular CBB reader, you can probably figure out that Maggie Gyllenhaal, Keri Russell, Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Garner, and Julia Roberts figured heavily into the list, but what about Will Ferrell?
It inspired me to devise this quiz. Can you guess which celebrities said the following quotes? (For the answers, click the link.)
This new mom was heartbroken when traveling without her daughter and had to pump and dump, saying, "Breastmilk is like liquid gold."- This singer who nursed her son for 13 months said that even from an early age her son knew, "that I’m someone special and that I feed him. I’m the milk cow!" She also said, "My theory is that nursing gives you superhuman powers. How else could I be doing all this when I’m usually a sleepaholic?"
- This TV anchor said, "Breastfeeding is a whole ‘nother profession. The skill that it takesto breastfeed. [laughs] It’s a whole other career in itself."
This former SNLer had a bizarre relationship with her breast pump, mostly caused by sleep deprivation. She swore it taunted her, with the ‘whoosh whoosh’ sound of the pump instead saying, "dirtywhore, dirty whore!"- This comedian said he’s glad his wife does the breastfeeding: "It’s awkward because atnight the baby will sleep with us and my wife will leave in the middleof the night right after the breastfeeding and the baby’s still hungryand she’ll roll over and just look at me. I’m like, ‘No, no. Thesedon’t function.’ She doesn’t believe me. She’s just looking at me like,’If you don’t want to give me any, that’s fine. Those are bigger thanmom’s.’"
- In terms of losing babyweight, this actress said breastfeeding is "miraculous."
- Regarding her husband wanting to help more, "He wishes he could do more, but unfortunatelythe "dairy queen" here is the only one making the milk!"
- For this actress who nursed her daughter for 14 months, breastfeeding "gave me peace and a sense of purpose."
This celebrity dad was disappointed by his son’s taking breastfeeding for granted: "My kid breastfeeds and hejust kinda got thisfrown on his face. He’s not even really getting anything to drink. AndI’m like, ‘You’re ungrateful.’ You know? I mean, how ungrateful. Here Ihad them when they were sippy cups. He’s got big gulp sitting at himright there. He doesn’t know what he’s got!" - This morning show host’s daughter took well to breastfeeding, saying, "Thefirst thing we did when we got home from the hospital was watchEntourage with her nursing on me. She took to breastfeeding 20 minutesafter I gave birth. I’m breastfeeding some nights from 2 to 3:30 a.m.,other nights from 1 to 1:45 a.m. I’m not exhausted at all."
This mom created her own diaper bag line because "I was breastfeeding at the time and used a breastfeeding pillow. I loved having the breastfeeding pillow on the plane with me becauseit was perfect for [my son] to sleep on as well as to feed him on. The onlyproblem with this is that the pillow is a funny shape and I didn’t havea bag that would hold the pillow and all the other things that go intoa diaper bag: diapers, baby wipes, medicines, etc." - While sipping Mother’s Milk Tea, this celebrity told an interviewer, "I have been eating just as much as I was when I was pregnantbecause in order to produce breast milk, you have to keep thecarbohydrates going."
This actress was surprised by her milk supply, saying, "I woke up one morning and it was like I had coconuts underneath athin layer of skin and my husband was really excited about it, but Ilooked like a porn star. I really did. It was really, like, it wascrazy." - This mom of three says her husband loves her post-pregnancy body, especially her “enormous breasts."
- This first time mom was disappointed that she hadn’t lost all of her baby weight yet but put it in perspective, saying, "Idon’t want to get too focused on losing weight. [My son is my] No. 1 priority, and I need to give him the calories he needs to grow."
- This British model mom nursed for nine months and didn’t mind that it took her that long to lose her pregnancy weight, "For the first nine months with breastfeeding, I kept up my calorieintake and my exercise routine consisted of pushing [the baby] in hispram…It’s only now that I feel I have got my figure back. But I’vedone it the right way, the natural way."
This primetime actress watched what she ate while she was nursing because "I tried to focus on how everything I was eating was going into his body," but when she stopped, "it was Gummi Bears by the mouthful!"- This actress said her son’s "list of likes include classical music, a clean diaper, mom’s boobs and long naps."
- This supermodel introduced her son in a photoshoot in a German magazine that included a few shots of her nursing him. She said, "So I now have 10 pounds more than before — and most of them seemto be in my breasts! I’d love to keep the extra weight in this place!Right now, I try to eat a lot of fatty foods, because I believe this isgood for my milk."
- This innkeeper/actress said her husband "took a photo of me nursing and I was horrified. I was like,’Oh, this poor baby must be so scared of this giant thing coming athim!’"
- This singer said, "Yes, [I'm nursing]. I can’t imagine not breastfeeding. I’m not going to preach aboutit, but it’s better for the baby and the mother, and it’s such a bondingthing as well."
How many did you get right?
