Dan Wheldon is a Diaper Changing Champ

Indy driver Dan Wheldon felt a surge of love and protection the minute his eight-week-old son Sebastian Daniel was born. It was such an overwhelming feeling that he wanted to do everything that he could to help his son, even change diapers. In fact, Dan’s wife Susie notes that the new dad “did 95 percent of the diaper changes” during the first two weeks of Sebastian’s life. The first diaper change, Dan will never forget!

“The first diaper change that I do at home on this changing station, I get his diaper down, cold air hits him, he pees right on my brand new carpet. What ya gonna do? It’s funny, because when it’s your child, you don’t care.”

Dan now knows that he has to be super fast with the diaper changes — and also in his racing career. “The last thing I want my child to see is Dad running around in the middle of the pack [on the track]. That would really upset me. And that would upset him,” says the former Indy 500 winner. “I would be embarrassed to take him to school with kids saying, ‘Hey, how’d your dad do this weekend?’ ‘Well, he finished fifth or sixth.’”

Speed is in Dan’s blood and he is hoping that it will be in Sebastian’s also. The 30-year-old began racing go-carts when he was a young boy and has joked with his wife that he should start his own carting team “because I need to get everything ironed out, so when [Sebastian] starts, he’s ready to go.” However, Dan might be more serious than he thinks about starting his own team because he often remembers “when my dad and I did it, and we have a lot of good stories. It’s good bonding for father and son.”

Ashton Shepherd On Her Protective Son

Jon Kopaloff/Film Magic

It takes a little while for some performers to adjust to being behind the camera, but for country singer Ashton Shepherd, it was her 3-year-old son James who had the problem! James is “a little jealous and protective,” explains Ashton, describing a time her makeup artist, Neil, came by to prepare her for a photoshoot. “Neil says, ‘Okay, I’m gonna work on your eyebrows’ [and starts fixing them]. And James looked at him and he was like, ‘Stop it!’ He started crying. He did not like him being near Mama or doing anything to Mama.” No worries though, as James is “over that now.”

“He actually walks around now and if he does something on my hair, he says he’s being like Neil. So he knows about it now. He’s not so afraid of anything.”

It makes sense that James has changed his opinion, as Ashton has been on the road for the past year. Raising one child while on tour can be difficult, never mind two, but Ashton believes that she could handle it if she became pregnant again soon. “My personal take on it is, I already have one child that I take on the road and that I manage. The Good Lord’s blessed me with being able to do that, and if [husband Roland Cunningham and I] were to have another child, I’d just look at it as a blessing.”

No matter which way you look at it, the 22-year-old has some concerns. “The thing about it is, you could so easily say, ‘Well, is this the right time or is this gonna be hard on me?’ And a part of me thinks it’s such a blessing to get to have children, ’cause there’s so many people who can’t, that I feel guilty to plan around it, if that makes sense. I feel guilty to go, ‘What do I have going on in the next three months? What’s gonna be going on next year?” Ashton does know that no matter what “you want to be smart” when you are thinking of having a baby.

“You don’t want to have a child at a time when you are extra, extra busy… I would be worried about the safety of my child and being pregnant and being under stress. So, you have to weigh those things.”

However, the “Sounds So Good” singer doesn’t think having another baby “would be a hard thing, because I’ve already got the most busy-body little thing that’s ever graced two feet. He’s never still, he’s completely rambunctious.” She adds, “I look at him at three and think, ‘I thought it was harder when he was littler. But I don’t really know which one was harder. Because he’s so busy and into everything now … and from birth to a year old, you feed ‘em, you change ‘em and all that. But they can’t get up and do anything either!”

Ben Stiller Wants Kids to Have a Regular Childhood

The entertainment world has always been a part of Ben Stiller’s life as both his parents Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara are performers, but the 42-year-old actor wants to make sure that his kids — Ella Olivia, 6, and Quinlin Dempsey, 3 — "have as much of a regular childhood as possible." If his kids decide to follow in their family’s footsteps, Ben will be "totally supportive" of them, but doesn’t see it happening just yet.

"My daughter is not that interested in movies. She’d rather be playing with her dolls, which is good. I think that’s healthy. My son sort of gets [show biz] but he’s also more involved with his trains."

Ben, who is currently starring in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, can next be seen in Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian. The comedian is happy to be making films that his children can watch because the majority of his earlier work does not fit that criteria. "It’s great to be able to share with them something they can enjoy. There’s not a lot of films of mine I can show to them but we’ll get to them eventually," he jokes. "I don’t know how long it will take until they can see Dodgeball or even Heavyweights. But I’m guessing we’ll get to both of them before There’s Something About Mary."

Ben and actress Christine Taylor, 37, have been married since May 13, 2000.

Kevin Nealon Stresses Flexibility for Older Fathers

Kevinnealon Life with a pregnant woman — his wife, actress Susan Yeagley — was so eye-opening for comedian Kevin Nealon, it inspired him to pen the humorous book Yes, You’re Pregnant, But What About Me?. At 54, with 19 months of experience to draw from as dad to the couple’s son Gable Ness, Kevin has even more wisdom to share with first-time fathers. In a recent interview with the OC Register Kevin advises them to "get used to multitasking and get used to things being left undone and a bunch of things on the floor." He adds,

When you first start, you pick up all of the toys and pacifiers, but I’m in a stage now where I just kick them out of the way.

Being an "older" parent can present some unique challenges, the Weeds star jokes. For those dads, he suggests "make sure that you are stretching so that your back doesn’t go out, because you’re lifting a kid all the time." "It’s hard for me to sneak into the nursery while [Gable] is sleeping, because when I walk all of my joints and tendons are popping," Kevin says, "It sounds like I’m walking on bubble wrap."

Jack Black’s Children: A Squid and a Superhero!

Jackblack40379_cbb

Most people compare a baby’s features to that of other family members, but comedian Jack Black looks outside the human race — he likens his 10-week-old son Thomas David to "a baby squid!" His reasoning? Thomas has "got no muscles, he’s just sort flopping around," and "his skin’s got this new baby sheen." As Thomas is "fresh out of the oven," Jack believe that description is likely to change, but for now he is just "squishy and soft and squidy."

The 38-year-old’s older son Samuel Jason, 2, isn’t a squid, but does believe he has the powers of a superhero! He "loves to wear his cape and run around the house." One super power that Jack demonstrated? Samuel pretends he has "super blowing power" to make people go away, but unfortunately, that doesn’t include his baby brother. Jack revealed that Samuel doesn’t like seeing "mommy feeding the new one" — it causes him to "freak out a little bit!"

Jack and his wife, cellist Tanya Haden, were married on March 14, 2006.

Juggling Work and Family Isn’t Easy, Says Fox News Anchor

Alisyn_camerotaFox & FriendsAlisyn Camerota is trying her hardest to balance her work and family life, but admits that it often leaves her feeling like she is "hanging on by a thread." She wakes up at 3:30 a.m. and leaves the house while husband Tim Lewis stays with their kids — fraternal twin daughters Alessandra and Francesca, 3, and son Nathaniel Andrew, 18 ½ months — until the babysitter arrives at 7:30 a.m. Alisyn is at work until 3 p.m., when she leaves to pick up the girls at preschool and heads home to "play with the kids until 6 p.m. when the dinner, bathing, reading, pajama routine begins." With the kids in bed by 7:45 p.m., Alisyn hits the hay herself at 8:30 p.m. After Alisyn is tucked in, she doesn’t move until morning, as Tim is also the "one that gets up in the middle of the night if one of the kids wakes up crying (and it seems one usually does)."

Sometimes the balance between motherhood and her career intersects, like when Alisyn recently had the chance to interview The Wiggles, a group her kids love. The 42-year-old brought the kids to the studio to watch them perform, and "now my daughters think I actually work with (or maybe for) The Wiggles!" The kids don’t just get to come visit mommy at work when there are special guests, but also when one of them is "experiencing some separation anxiety," which happens a few times a year. Even though they do see what their mom does, Alisyn doesn’t expect the girls to want to be just like mommy — at least not yet.

They haven’t exactly grasped the concept of choosing a career path yet, though my son seems to have a penchant for sweeping and mopping, so we’re thinking something custodial is in his future.

Even though Alisyn stays busy and tired with her job and being a mom, she knows that it is a "daily discovery" with her kids and tries "to dig down deep and have more patience and energy than I would otherwise."

They deserve a mother who is connecting with them … even though I may feel like napping!

Gabrielle Reece Savors Alone Time in Gym

Gabriellereece6618_cbb_3

Volleyball star Gabrielle Reece loves spending time with her kids, but she also treasures her solo workouts, as they provide much-needed alone time. The 38-year-old was recently heading down to do a workout in her gym when her daughter Reece Viola, 4 ½, decided that she wanted to "come down and hang out with me while I trained." Gabby told her she could, but there were rules to follow and an understanding that "this was ‘Mommy’s time," and that if she chose to "have a fit or yell and scream then she was going to be banned from my area." Reece didn’t realize that her mom was serious, and during the workout started to "turn all energy of the universe into her emotional needs of the moment" and throw a temper tantrum — something Gabby did not appreciate.

So in an effort to protect ‘Mommy’s time’ and keep my word, I did the only sensible thing: I kicked her out.

The fitness guru admits that she did learn two important lessons throughout the experience — "protect your time" and "follow through on your word," adding that "at the end of the day who cares if they scream and yell? Better that they do it on the other side of the door then in your ear."

Gabrielle and her husband, surfer Laird Hamilton, 44, are also parents to Izabella, 13, and Brody Jo, 7 months. Izabella’s mom is Laird’s ex, Maria.

Jack Black: Bragging About Kids is Boring

Jackblack40379_cbbWith fellow actors like Robert Downey Jr. calling him "magno-rific" and saying "you have to coin new terms to describe how potent a force he is," these days funnyman Jack Black has taken to using those talents for keeping the peace in the Black household at night!  Having "a new baby in the house," Jack admits that more than once his fatherhood duties have had him taking "out your best material to make sure" youngest son Thomas David, 10 weeks, "goes from tears to smiles."

A father to two boys — older son Samuel Jason is 2 — Jack jokes that before having kids of his own, he never fully understood parents boasting about their children to each other, calling the bragging "boring." As far as Jack goes, there is no need for parents to over-analyze, saying when "a kid is banging on the table…so what?  It doesn’t make him a musical genius!"  While his two children might have him telling cute stories to friends and family, the 38-year-old actor admits he now "gets it," but is only amused when they are his own kids, explaining, "I’m still bored when other people do it!"

Making a name for himself over the past few years, Jack hopes that his celebrity status in Hollywood won’t take anything away from his boys down the road.  The actor — who is willing to "go for the small combo at Carl’s Jr." to "live till the kids are 30" — hopes for "them to be their own people" and avoid the label of "Jack Black’s kids." At the end of the day however, Jack’s dreams for his two boys do not differ much from any other father, with Jack saying, "Whatever I do, I want to make sure my kids can be proud of me." His goal?  That when all is said and done, he can tell his kids he followed his dreams "without saying ‘for the cash.’"

Tori Spelling: Liam is “Adjusting” to His Sister Stella

Tori_spelling_1_cbbjpgActress Tori Spelling is adjusting to motherhood all over again after welcoming daughter Stella Doreen seven weeks ago, but she isn’t the only one in the family learning to cope — son Liam Aaron, 16 months, is as well.  In an appearance on The View, Tori shared that Liam is "adjusting" and that it "was hard for him at first," adding that "he was fine with her in the hospital and when she came home and he saw her, it was like, ‘Why is she staying here?’" But no worries, as the 35-year-old said that he is "gradually starting to like her."

One thing that has helped is that Liam is "fascinated with smells," and Tori and husband Dean McDermott, 41, would help their son to get closer to his baby sister "by saying ‘Oh look, you can smell Stella’s toes,’" saying that he "now smells her toes and goes ‘Phew.’"  And even though her kids are close together in age, Tori says that things are going well and "Stella’s almost sleeping through the night."

Now that Liam is getting older, Tori knows that preschool and play dates are what is next for her son, saying, "I was freaking out when I found out about the preschool. Liam was barely off my boob and I was suppose to get him into preschool." Between preschool and play dates, toddlers have just as busy schedules as some adults, so the actress wanted to help out other moms by partnering with Motts For Tots and creating a play date planner.

I came up with a play date planner. I love to plan things so I thought, ‘Why not for toddlers?’
