Taye Diggs Ponders the Placenta Pill

While many parents-to-be spend months preparing for baby’s arrival by attending a long list of recommended classes — Taye Diggs and his wife Idina Menzel included — the Private Practice actor admits he still wasn’t exactly ready when the big day arrived!

“It got rough at moments because you have no idea [about] the sounds your wife is going to make,” Taye explains during a Thursday night visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live.

“There were moments when I had to excuse myself and just take a deep breath, but at the end of the day I was there and I was a cheerleader and we worked it out.”

Fortunately, when Taye found himself needing a minute to recoup, Idina was able to rely heavily on a doula. “She was just there for Idina,” he says. Having coached the couple in a series of classes prior to delivery day, Taye admits the doula was happy to offer a few last-minute reminders during the labor.

“She basically told us everything that was going to happen before it was going to happen because regardless of all the books that you read, for me personally, when I’m in the moment, I forgot everything.”

Once Walker Nathaniel was safely delivered and dad had cut the cord, the couple’s attention was redirected toward baby boy’s placenta — the doula inquired as to whether the new parents planned on taking advantage of what it had to offer.

“She asked us if we wanted the placenta afterwards, because there are crazy nutrients,” Taye recalls. “During one of the classes, very casually, she said, ‘We can make the placenta into tablets you can take each day.’ And I look at my wife, ‘Are you crazy?’”

For Idina — who showed interest in the pills and had them made — the unique opportunity was no laughing matter, leaving Taye to ponder the placenta’s final fate.

“My wife was serious, she wanted to be prepared on every front. I’ve been afraid to ask her [if she's been taking them].”

As for baby boy’s name, Taye reveals the moniker is in honor of author Alice Walker and not Walker, Texas Ranger, before adding that the name isn’t likely to become a problem in the school yard. “Me and my wife figured out that by the time he was old enough for kids to make fun — he’d be like 5, 6, maybe 7 or 8 — no one’s going to know who Walker, Texas Ranger is,” he states.

And while the couple may have easily agreed upon their son’s name, the upcoming Halloween holiday has left Idina and Walker’s nanny at odds with Taye!

“I have concerns because he’s a little dude and I don’t want him to be dressed up like a little sunflower. I want him to be as masculine as he can be at [seven] weeks.”

Elisabeth Hasselbeck Reveals Nip Slip on Her View Return

Andrew H. Walker/Getty

Two and a half months after giving birth to her third child, Elisabeth Hasselbeck waded right back into the gaggle of gab on The View Monday, even letting loose with an embarrassing revelation of her own.

First she shared a picture of her 10-week-old son and related how tame it was compared to another photo she recently shared with her family. So how did a picture of Isaiah Timothy’s first smile, which she sent out to her family e-mail list, cause such a stir?

“You know when your baby smiles for the first time … I reach for the iPhone — I had just been feeding him — and I took the photo,” she said. “He had this huge smile. Immediately I forward it to everyone on my family distribution list — my mom, my dad, my brother, Tim [Hasselbeck]’s dad, his brother, his mom, his other brother and I send it to myself. So I get home and open up the photo … Yeah, no wonder why he is smiling — because my nipple is in the photo!”

“It’s worse than drunk dialing, to forward pictures postpartum,” she said of inadvertently flashing her entire family. “It’s embarrassing.”

During her maternity leave, Elisabeth was temporarily replaced by headline-winning guests hosts including Kate Gosselin, who was in the middle of her ugly divorce, and Meghan McCain, who recently got into a scrape with fans and the media over a supposedly inappropriate Twitter photo.

“I’m the one who just forwarded a photo with my own nipple,” Elisabeth joked.

Seal’s Kids Connect Him to God

Steve Granitz/WireImage

Beyond red Kabbalah bracelets and the ever-present “thank you’s” at awards ceremonies, there is often little room for celebrity and religion to mingle in the spotlight.

In filmmaker Peter Rodger’s visual odyssey of a documentary, Oh My God?, however, celebrities including Hugh Jackman, Ringo Starr and Seal get the chance to speak honestly about their personal views of God and the great beyond.

“If I’m constantly reminded by those access points, then I need look no further,” Seal says candidly in the film, referring to his wife, model Heidi Klum, and their four children. The singer, 46, says that he has “chosen to see God in people” over the years.

His voice will join those of an entire cast of interviewees, ranging from everyday people to spiritual leaders to celebrities, all speaking from various cultural and religious backgrounds. Says Rodgers of the project, which began (initially self-financed) in 2006: “My goal was to find out what this entity that goes by the name of God means to people.”

“I was fed up with the childish schoolyard mentality that permeates this world, what I call the “My God is Greater than Your God” syndrome. By throwing out the question in an interview as ‘What is God?’ instead of ‘Who is God?’ it makes the interviewee look at God from the outside in rather than from the inside out.”

Says Hugh, star of Broadway’s current A Steady Rain, and one subject in the film: “If you put Buddha, Jesus Christ, Socrates, Shakespeare, Arjuna, Krishna at a dinner table together, I can’t see them having any argument.”

Originally premiering in July 2009 at the Jerusalem International Film Festival, Oh My God? will come to select theaters stateside in November.

Taye Diggs on Childbirth: ‘It Was Crazy’

AP/Courtesy of Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs

Calling wife Idina Menzel “a warrior” for delivering their 6-week-old son Walker Nathaniel naturally without pain medication, Taye Diggs opened up about the happy day during a Thursday visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“It was amazing. I was holding her hands and cheering her on,” he reveals. “I said I would look two times. I would look when the baby was crowning, and I wanted to look right when Walker came out.”

“Then when he came out, all the sudden it was like my inner gangster came out. I was like, ‘Yeah baby, you did that thing, that’s what I’m talkin’ about, that’s my boy!’”

Adding that “it was crazy” and that he “couldn’t control” himself, Taye likened the experience to “the Super Bowl, World Series, World Cup, everything wrapped up into one.”

There were some tense moments leading up to Walker’s debut, and watching Idina experience childbirth in full was almost too much to bear. “When that first pain hit her and I saw her face, I was like, ‘Okay, I’m just going to be in this other room…’” the 38-year-old actor jokes.

Things got off to a far more mellow start, however. “There was something going on that morning, so we knew, ‘Okay, this is going to be a special day,”‘ Taye explains. “She said, ‘Go off to work, and if I need you, I’ll call you.’”

When that call came, Taye was ready!

“In the movies and on TV, you always hear everybody’s rushing, but everyone is telling me when it actually happens, there is no need to rush. There’s no need to speed. So on the way home, I was constantly telling myself, ‘Relax, relax, be cool.’”

After arriving at the hospital “the labor really start[ed] to kick in,” Taye added, and ultimately lasted between seven and eight hours.

Halle Berry Says Pregnancy Rumors Gave Her ‘a Complex’

INF

Walking across the stage in a tight black dress, Halle Berry quickly and definitely put the kibosh on persistent pregnancy rumors during a Thursday appearance on The Jay Leno Show. “I was getting a complex,” the 43-year-old actress admits. “I was like, ‘I’ve got to stop with the burgers or something!’”

Having “put to bed” any and all whispers about a baby-on-the-way, Halle turned to the “fantastic” baby she already has — 18-month-old Nahla Ariela.

She proceeded to tell a “funny” new mom story that only a handful of mothers in the world could possibly relate to. Having graced the cover of Harper’s Bazaar this spring, Halle was at the grocery store with Nahla when her daughter recognized mom’s image on the magazine.

“I’ve got on my sunglasses and I’m in the market. I’m putting all my groceries on the belt, and she’s over my shoulder and I hear her say ‘Mama, Mama,’” Halle recalls. “I knew, ‘Ooh, she saw that cover, that’s cute.’”

A shopper in line behind them then began to coo alongside Nahla, before correcting baby girl. “I heard the woman say, ‘Oh no honey, that’s not your mama, that’s Halle Berry,’” Halle explained. “And I’m like, okay, that’s kind of funny.” Nahla, however, refused to back down on what she already knew to be true!

“Nahla says, ‘Mama! Mama!’ And the lady gets, like, indignant about it, [and said], ‘No, honey, that’s not your mama. That’s Halle Berry.’ And I couldn’t take it any longer so I whipped off my glasses and turned around and I was like, ‘No, I am her mother and I am Halle Berry and she knows what she’s talking about!’ It was one of those great mom moments.”

Nahla is Halle’s daughter with partner Gabriel Aubry.

Jenna Elfman Expecting Baby No. 2

Kevin Brooks/AdMedia

Less than one month after revealing she “definitely” intends to become a mom-of-two, Jenna Elfman is making good on her promise.

During an appearance Wednesday morning on CBS’ The Early Show, the Accidentally on Purpose actress, 37, revealed that she is expecting her second child with husband Bodhi Elfman.

“I have a baby in my tummy — but a real one, not just for my TV show,” she shared. “My character’s pregnant the whole first season, so I said, ‘It’s a good time to have another baby, because we won’t have to hide it.’”

On the show, Jenna plays a woman that becomes pregnant by a much younger one-night stand, who then moves in with her. Eagle-eyed viewers should keep an eye out for her own burgeoning bump, Jenna jokes. “By episode three if you look closely once it airs, you’ll see … ‘Oh is she a little bloated? Did she have a big dinner?’”

The couple — already parents to 2-year-old Story Elias — were married in 1995.

Accidentally on Purpose premieres Monday, September 21 at 8:30 p.m. on CBS.

Melissa Joan Hart and Soleil Moon Frye: Celebrity Playdate!

Meredith Jenks for PEOPLE for use on CBB

Former child stars Melissa Joan Hart and Soleil Moon Frye have known each other “pretty much our whole lives — we met when we were 5 or 6, on a movie,” says Melissa.

Since then, they’ve gone from girls “riding our scooters down the street,” says Soleil, to teens hanging out in Manhattan. “We’d take long walks and drink lots of coffee.”

There was even a time when “we tried to be wild” by hitting up nightclubs, Soleil says, before adding with a laugh, “It’s a little different now!”

The reason for the change? Melissa’s sons (Mason Walter, 3 ½, and Braydon Hart, 17 months) and Soleil’s daughters (Poet Sienna Rose, 4, and Jagger Joseph Blue, 17 months), who get together for L.A. playdates — over organic lollipops! — at either Melissa’s candy store SweetHarts or Soleil’s children’s boutique The Little Seed.

“We’re lucky both Poet and Mason have younger siblings,” says Soleil, 33. “When they play together with other children, they know to be nice to each other.” Uh…sometimes. “There’s accidental whacking each other in the head with toys,” says Melissa, 33.

Then there’s Mason’s crush on Poet. “He tries to love on her, but she’s like, ‘Go away!’ ” says Melissa. But Soleil predicts the kids will get past their differences: “Jagger and Braydon already like each other. And Poet’s falling in love with Mason eventually.”

Brooke Burke on Her Party of Six

In March 2008, season 7 Dancing With the Stars champ Brooke Burke, 37, and her actor fiancé David Charvet, 37, added a boy, Shaya Braven, 17 months, to their brood of three girls, Neriah, 9, Sierra Sky, 7, and Heaven Rain, 2 ½. Here, the parents talk about their crazy lifestyle.

David: I like that there is a little more testosterone. Having all these girls around me was a little difficult. Especially for the electrical bill, when all the hair dryers would go on at once!

Brooke: I am super-close with my girls, but I have always wanted to have a son, and I was committed to keep on going until I got him.

David: There is a really strong connection between Shaya and me. He is very deep when he looks at you. Having my son has been a dream come true and I really feel we’re going to be close.

Brooke: Three was much easier. Four rocked my world because two of them are young enough that they absolutely need me at all times. There is a lot of action, and it’s a lot busier. We all help.

David: It’s very, very hard, because there is always somebody that needs something. At the end of the day when everybody is asleep, we’re so exhausted from starting at 5:30, 6 o’clock in the morning…

Brooke: Like, you know that date we thought we wanted to go on? We’re too tired. A lot of couples have date nights — but they don’t have four kids!

David: Instead, we’ll have dinner at night in the cabana, have a big fire and bring out the instruments.

Laila Ali on How Curtis Jr. Changed Her Life

Former boxer and Dancing With the Stars alum Laila Ali, 31, and her sports broadcaster husband Curtis Conway, 38, talk to PEOPLE about welcoming son Curtis Jr. (also called CJ) on August 28, 2008.

Laila: Our relationship now is so different. We used to enjoy going to the movies and dinner, but now, having the baby, it’s easy to forget to take time for yourself.

Curtis: We can’t just get up and go. Our time outside of the house really has to be planned.

Laila: But we’re not missing anything. The only problem is, I’m tired all the time. So as soon as I get free time, I want to go to sleep.

Curtis: Laila is very attentive to him. He has a certain whine for one thing, a certain cry for another. She automatically picks up on what it is.

Laila: He is very feisty, and he knows what he wants. You don’t have to guess with him.

Curtis: I love getting on the floor with him. I love him slobbering over me. We wrestle.

Laila: I definitely want more kids. But I’m going to wait until my son is about 3 — so he can get me a diaper when I need one! When you have a child and commit to raising that child together, then there is nothing stronger than that.
