Melissa Joan Hart thanks her mom for labor motivation

Tags: News, Quotes

Melissajoanhartandfamily During the difficult delivery of her son Mason, turning 2-years-old next month, actress Melissa Joan Hart was quickly approaching an unwanted C-section when her own mom stepped in to save the day.  Thanks to a little white lie, Melissa says she found the extra motivation she needed to have the birth experience she wanted; She recently relayed Mason’s birth story for the March of Dimes’ ‘Every Baby Has a Story’ campaign, as re-told below.

My baby story is basically about my labor and delivery.  I was very pregnant…I was huge!  And it was a difficult process.  I was induced because my baby was getting very large.  And I really didn’t want a C-section, I really wanted to be able to do it natural.  And, basically, the only thing really natural that happened the whole process was that my water broke naturally.  And after that I opted for the drugs, and went for the epidural.

And I’m very glad I did because 17-hours later I was pushing for three hours, which was quite a process, but I was fighting and fighting to get that baby out.  I just did not want a C-section and for two hours my doctor kept saying ‘One more push and you’re going in for a C-section’ but she still let me go three hours.

After a big struggle my mom said ‘I see his ears!’ and I thought ‘Okay, his ears are out so that means just a little bit further and they can pull him out and I’m done!’  I put three pushes together and just kept it going…kept going and going.  The baby came out and I thanked my mom for telling me that she saw the ears because it motivated me and she told me that she actually didn’t.  She said that she just saw his head and it kept coming and coming and coming and that where she thought there should be ears, there weren’t.  He just had a very big head!

So after all is said and done, I’m fine.  I didn’t have to have a C-section and my baby is perfectly healthy and wonderful.

Mason is the first child for Melissa and her husband Mark Wilkerson; The couple expect their second child in early March.

Fred Savage thankful for Oliver’s long, slow birth

Tags: Dads, News, Quotes

Fredandoliver_2 Although his wife would probably beg to differ, Fred Savage says that sometimes a 30-hour labor is a good thing!  Out of town on business and unable to catch a flight home, Fred recently recalled that had it not been for Jennifer Savage’s protracted delivery of Oliver Philip, 16-months, he would have most likely missed the big event.  He shared Oliver’s birth story as part of the ‘Every Baby Has a Story’ campaign by the March of Dimes.

The story of when he was born, I was working in Park City, Utah, and my wife was down here in Los Angeles.  I had my pager and my cell phone and everything ready to go to get the word when he was about to come.  And so I got the call and I got a plane ticket and rushed to the airport to come back down to LA and my wife called me from the hospital and they told her that it was false labor, that she should go home, that she’s not going to have the baby that night.  So she called me at the airport, it was the very last flight out of Park City that night, and she said, ‘The baby’s not coming tonight.’

So I go home, and of course on the way back to my house I get a call from my wife saying ‘It’s real! It’s real! Come home!’ so I had to watch the clock and wait for the first flight to come.  It was a dreadful night, between calling Southwest Airlines and trying to charter a plane…I made it finally back to LA about 8 the next morning, and I was there in plenty of time because he didn’t come until about 11 that night.  So I always thank my wife for her 30-hour labor because if it weren’t for that I wouldn’t be able to see him come into the world.

Fred and Jennifer have been married since 2004; Oliver is their first child.

Jodie Sweetin: ‘I can’t wait to be a mom’

Although she doesn’t have a birth story to share just yet, actress Jodie Sweetin, 25, is clearly excited to have one to tell.  The former Full House star is expecting her first child with husband Cody Herpin, and recently shared her feelings about the pregnancy with the ‘Every Baby Has a Story’ campaign by the March of Dimes.

I’m due April 6, and I’m absolutely thrilled.  I don’t know if its a boy or a girl yet but I’m dying to find out.  When my husband and I found out we were pregnant we were absolutely thrilled and shocked and really excited.  He kept saying, ‘I think you’re pregnant, I think you’re pregnant, you need to take a pregnancy test.’  I took one and was like ‘You’re right!  How did you know?’

From then on its just been really, really exciting.  Each little sonogram picture we have taken…It just grew from just a little dot on the screen to where it’s starting to look like a baby now.  We got to hear the heartbeat, and that’s an amazing, amazing sound.

And I can’t wait!  I can’t wait to be a mom.  The next six months are going to be the biggest adventure of my life, only to be topped off with a beautiful baby.  So I’m so excited, and I’m really excited to be a part of the March of Dimes today.

Julie Bowen says she’s ‘grateful’ for a healthy baby

Juliebowen During childbirth, even five tiny seconds of uncertainty can change your perspective for a lifetime.  When she delivered her son Oliver McLanahan, turning 8-months-old next week, actress Julie Bowen heard the sound that no parent ever wants to hear in the delivery room — silence.  Fortunately, Oliver was fine!  But those initial moments were scary enough to stay with Julie, who says that as a result she will never take Oliver’s good health for granted.  His birth story, as told to the Every Baby Has A Story campaign, is below.

It was actually really exciting because I was at work on Boston Legal pretending to be in labor and all of a sudden my water broke … after all the screaming I guess Oliver decided that it was time to come out.  And we’re really lucky because the whole thing happened pretty quickly and progressed pretty well but when he came out, there was this moment of just silence, where nobody said anything.

I couldn’t see him, I guess he was all blue…I kept screaming ‘What’s wrong with my baby?’  It was a very dramatic moment.  But of course there was nothing at all wrong with the baby.  They literally did the traditional ‘turn-him-upside-down-and-smack-him-on-the-butt’ and he started to cry and was absolutely fine.  Pink and happy!  And he showed an early proclivity for boobs and screaming.

And I’ve just been incredibly blessed and incredibly lucky that I had such a healthy, normal child right away.  Even that five seconds of fear made me realize how horrible it must be for women who experience problems in birth, premature babies and any other pregnancy scares.  So I’m really, really grateful for my experience.

Julie, 37, and her husband Scott Phillips have been married since 2004; Oliver is their first child.
